Manual Or Lever Action Machines

Overpressure Error РCaf̩ Semi-Auto Espresso Machine

Pulling single or double shots with a lever-driven mechanism necessitates physical power. Manual and spring-loaded are the two types.

When the handle of a manual machine is raised, a hole in the brewing chamber lets pre-heated water into the chamber, saturating the grounds. When the barista lowers the lever, they can manage the length of the pre-infusion, the flow rate, and the pressure.

When the internal spring of a spring-driven machine is relaxed, the lever points up. When you pull the lever down, the spring compresses and the piston rises. This makes room for water to enter the brewing chamber.

As the spring releases its tension, the lever returns to its original position. As a result, the piston pushes the water down, extracting the espresso.

The barista has complete control over lever machines. Its simple to accomplish this if a certain coffee requires a longer pre-infusion or extracts more flavor with a specific pressure profile. They encourage you to practice and change your technique until you find that sweet spot.

Lever machines are visually beautiful, and the lack of electrical components may appeal to some. They arent commonly used nowadays, and they arent perfect for a busy coffee shop, but if you want to make coffee in a steampunk style, this is the machine for you.

Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine

Like the Oracle machines, the Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine offers two independent boilers for $1,595.00. One is for heating water to pull shots of espresso. The other is for steaming milk.

Why would anyone want two? Well, because you wont have to wait for the water to heat back up before you can steam your milk. This can save you a lot of time, especially if you are making multiple drinks at once.

That said, this machine takes a step away from the self-contained design of the Breville BES990BSS Oracle Touch in that it does not have a built-in grinder.

Breville, knowing that users will need a separate grinder, has put together the Breville Dynamic Duo Dual Boiler Espresso Machine and Smart Grinder Pro Package that includes both the Breville BES920XL Dual Boiler Espresso Machine and the Breville Smart Grinder Pro.

The combination package is available for $1,699.95 on Amazon. Thats $100.00 less than buying the two units separately at the time of writing.

I talk more about this grinder in my best coffee grinder 2021 review, where I named it the best affordable espresso grinder. The upside to having the separate grinder is 60 separate grind settings for maximum control over the coarseness of the grind. The downside is that it will take up more counter space.

How Does An Espresso Machine Work

If you are relatively new in using espresso makers, all that complicated jargon must have left your head hurting. This section will be your OTC pill, simplifying how an espresso machine works and explaining some important espresso maker terms.

To keep stuff simple, lets take the example of a semi-automatic machine. First, youll have to grind your beans in either a grinding machine or in the espresso makers built-in grinder. How coarse or fine the grounds are, depends on how strong you want your espresso.

After this, you put these grounds into the portafilter, a spoon-like, heavy metal tool with a filter basket. Next, youll have to tamp these grounds with a flat-sided heavy tool to even everything out. The portafilter is then locked into its place, known as the group head, in the espresso maker.

Once this is done, water enters the machine either through a built-in or removable reservoir, or a connected pipeline. Next, this water is pressurized through a vibratory or rotary pump. Bars are a measure of pressure, and anywhere between 9 to 15 bars is ideal for espressos.

From here, the pressurized water is heated in a single or double boiler. Single boilers use the same temperature of water for steaming and brewing or use thermostats for regulation. Double boilers heat water at different temperatures for both processes.

Lastly, this pressurized and heated water is passed through the coffee in the portafilter, extracting the very sought-after drink, espresso.

What Are Ese Pods

How Easy Is It To Clean

To help your machine last longer, serve great coffee, and look lavish, you MUST keep your machine clean from stains, scratches, scaling, and coffee residue.

Smaller machines are more difficult to clean with their small corners, edges, splits, plastic wares, and small internal space.

External cleaning isnt the only thing that keeps your machine maintained internal cleaning is more important to ensure coffee grounds and calcium isnt building up.

    Internal cleaning:

    • Wash the water reservoir with hot water and refill it every day to clean/rinse the unit with fresh water.
    • Use soft water to avoid descaling.
    • If you have a portafilter-less espresso machine, empty the puck dust bin every day to dispose of organic waste from the machine.
    • Use a brush to clean the grinder and its burr.
    • You can wash the hopper with water in the sink. Check if these wares are dishwasher safe.
    • Rinse the brewing unit after every use.

The easiest solution is to buy a machine that has automatic cleaning options.

Please note: Choose a machine thats split into parts for easier cleaning and is dishwasher safe. Dont put metallic wares in soapy water or water at all. A damp cloth is fine to wipe the metallic parts clean.

Semi Automatic Espresso Machines Vs Standard Espresso Machines

A semi-automatic espresso machine differs from other espresso makers in terms of how much of the process is handled by the machine compared to how much you have to do yourself. For example, a manual espresso machine doesnt contain any buttons, displays, or electronic components. You do everything on your own from start to finish, and you grind, measure, tamp, and time the shot without help from the machine.

An automatic espresso machine still requires you to grind, measure, and tamp your own coffee grounds, but it will do everything else with the push of a button. Theres no timing the shot on your own with this machine.

A super-automatic espresso machine can do everything from start to finish. A built-in grinder will grind your beans, deposit them in the portafilter, and tamp them without any help from you. Then you push a button, and it does everything else, including timing the shot. Many of these machines may also include an automatic milk frother that will brew an entire specialty beverage for you.

A semi-automatic espresso machine offers a nice balance of customization and automation. While you still have to grind, measure, and tamp the grounds, you dont have to manually apply pressure to pull the shot as you do with a manual espresso machine. It has a simple button that you can use to pull the shot, but it wont time the shot for you as an automatic espresso machine will.

    Breville Oracle Espresso Machine

The Breville Oracle Espresso Machine was released before the BES990BSS. The big difference between these machines is that the Oracle has a LCD screen, whereas the Oracle Touch has a color touch screen.

In practical terms, the LCD screen on the Oracle doesnt walk the user through the steps of making each drink like the Oracle Touch does. So, theres a higher learning curve.

One positive thing Id like to highlight on both of these machines is the one-touch approach to making Americanos. A double shot of espresso is delivered to your cup, and then a separate spout tops off the cup with hot water. Not even super automatic espresso machines do this!

The current price on Amazon is $2,199.95.

How Do I Clean An Espresso Machine

Like any coffee maker, espresso machines require regular cleaning to ensure optimal operation. In fact espresso makers can be particularly sensitive to maintenance neglect. In addition to coffee brewing, some of these products have systems for steaming milk and grinding beans. Each subsystem calls for specific steps to keep them dirt and grime free.

The portafilter, the main brewing chamber, should be hand-washed with soap and hot water daily. And to make the task easier, run a water-only brewing cycle before and after each espresso shot you pull . You’ll likely have to clean the water shower screen weekly too. For more details be sure to check your machine’s manual for cleaning instructions specific to your brewer.

What Type Of Portafilter Does It Have

Breville Bambino Espresso Machine vs. Delonghi Dedica Espresso Machine | Crew Comparison

Now, you might wonder if a portafilter is the same for every machine, but there are variations. Before we continue, lets go over what a portafilter is.

Theportafilter is a basket molded with a handle to carry ground coffee for the brewing process. When you attach the portafilter to the group head, pressurized water is able to go through the coffee grounds and extract your espresso.

You can select a single, double, or pod basket to put in the portafilter, this will determine the volume of your shot or allow you to use an ESE pod instead of loose coffee grinds.

Many machines with built-in grinders come with a portafilter cradle to hold the ground or come with an enclosed system. You can attach the portafilter and allow auto-dosing and auto-tamping in an enclosed system.

There are many types of portafilter depending on their size, handle, open/closed, locked/.unlocked.

    • Portafilter size: Domestic portafilters usually offer a 54mm diameter. Commercial-style portafilters come with 58mm diameter.
    • Handle: Manufacturers usually put their mark and unique design over the handle to show brand name and pattern. Handles are usually made of plastic or wood.
    • Open/close: Domestic portafilters usually have a sealed bottom, but bottomless portafilters come with an exposed rear. This open bottom allows you to visualize the saturation process. You can actually notice water mixing in with ground coffee with a bottomless portafilter.
