Testing The Effects Of Cream In Coffee When Fasting

On my second YouTube channel that I run with my husband, Keith, we perform a lot of small-scale tests to determine how different foods affect our intermittent fast.

On testing days, we get up in the morning, take our baseline blood glucose and ketone readings, consume something, and then retest our blood at 30, 60, and 120 minutes.

What wed like to see is that a food or drink does not cause a spike in glucose or a drop in ketones, because that may indicate a rise in insulin. Insulin is the fat-storing hormone, so if it goes up, fat is being stored, not released and burned.

When we tested heavy cream, the result was favorable meaning it caused a slight drop in glucose and a slight rise in ketones.

From that, we concluded that cream in your coffee would not knock your body out of fat-burning mode, and therefore it was okay to consume during your intermittent fast!

Now admittedly, these home experiments with just two subjects are far from a rigorous scientific study. There are several factors to consider when determining if youd like to add cream to your coffee.

Mct Oil And Keto Coffee

Im not going to lie to you, there are a lot of technical terms that are hard to understand about MCT Oil. Im going to explain it in a way thats easy to understand.

Medium-chain triglycerides are fats found in coconut oil and other foods. MCTs are metabolized differently than long-chain triglycerides, which are found in most other foods.

MCT Oil is a highly concentrated source of medium-chain triglycerides. It provides sustained energy, supports a healthy digestive system, and suppresses hunger. Its super easy to add into liquids such as coffee because it has no smell or taste.

Fasting And Artificial Sweeteners

Can I Have Cream in My Coffee? Intermittent Fasting Viewer Q & A

Sweet taste is a much-discussed topic regarding intermittent fasting and the keto diet. On the one hand, it is difficult to get away from it. On the other hand, it substantially promotes cravings.

Most sugar-free sweeteners have zero protein, carbohydrates, and calories. Therefore, they do not raise the blood sugar level. But is the calculation that simple?

No, since people often forget that both intermittent fasting and keto have one essential goal: Lowering insulin levels to allow your body to tap into stored fat for energy.

Since the storage hormone, insulin, prevents body fat breakdown and ketone production, a significant increase in insulin levels breaks the fast.

Unfortunately, most diet gurus have not done their homework in this context.

As endocrinologist and fasting pioneer Dr. Jason Fung correctly points out, it does not matter whether food increases blood sugar levels as long as it increases insulin levels .

Ketosis Insulin Sensitivity And Autophagy

The point of intermittent fasting is to get into ketosis theres little doubt you will get into this state, if youre fasting. Your body will be forced to burn fat if you arent ingesting any calories. The question really is then: Does coffee interfere with ketosis? The answer seems to be a resounding, No! In fact, coffee has been found to stimulate ketosis, and increase fat burning.

Improved insulin sensitivity is another significant benefit of fasting. This means your body responds better to insulin signaling. Another bit of good news is that, over time, coffee can actually improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance.

Autophagy is another reason to eat following a time-restricted eating schedule, which is essentially what intermittent fasting is. This metabolic process occurs during fasted states, and is the bodys way of detoxifying and repairing itself.

Think of autophagy sort of like a recycling program where faulty cell parts are disassembled and eliminated. Its an important process in keeping inflammation at bay, preventing cancer and other chronic diseases, and supporting immunity.

How Many Calories Breaks A Fast

Hate to break it to you, but “technically, consuming any calories breaks a fast,” says Benjamin Horne, Ph.D., a genetic epidemiologist who has published research on the effects of intermittent fasting. Even a few calories’ worth of food can inactivate some of fasting’s perks. According to Horne, some mechanisms behind fasting’s benefits, like ketosis , remain active with the consumption of certain macronutrients but others, like autophagy, may or may not remain active. “In humans, it appears that autophagy does not remain as active when any food is consumed,” he says.

But what if we’re talking about a measly 2 to 5 calories in a cup of tea or coffee? This ultra-low-calorie territory is where things get a little tricky. According to Horne, it likely needs to be a water-only fast to maintain the maximum benefit from autophagy.

Others aren’t so sure we need to be quite this nitpicky, though. “I’ve heard good debates about whether coffee can break a fast. We don’t have any good evidence to show either way,” says Vincent Pedre, M.D., an integrative physician and gut health expert who frequently recommends intermittent fasting diets to his patients. “I would say if you’re drinking organic black coffeeno cream, no sweetenersthen you should be fine. That said, I would say stick to as close to zero calories as you can during your fasting hours with plenty of clean filtered water herbal teas are also good.”

Intermittent Fasting: Coffee With Sweetener

The most common sweeteners are aspartame in Diet Coke, acesulfame-K in Coke Zero, and sucralose in Splenda.

None of them provide carbohydrates, proteins, or calories. Nevertheless, studies show that they increase insulin levels significantly.

For example, sucralose increases insulin levels by around 20 percent .

While aspartame, the classic sweetener in diet soda, does not affect blood sugar, it can increase insulin levels more than regular sugar .

Moreover, the artificial sweetener acesulfame potassium in zero drinks increases insulin levels in the same fashion as glucose does .

Therefore, in addition to a variety of other side effects, these sweeteners prevent fat burning.

Hence, artificial sweeteners are no safe option during intermittent fasting.

That being said, not all forms of coffee can be easily had while you are Intermittent Fasting.

Do remember, while caffeine in itself may not be a bad ingredient, what you add to your coffee may make it unhealthy.

Adding excess amounts of sugar, whipping cream, topping ingredients may add to your calorie count. Sugar alternatives like jaggery, honey, even if low-calorie, can still disturb your regime.

Again, adding milk may also be a contentious issue. While there are some who feel adding a spoonful or splash of milk to your coffee is okay and won’t break your fast, too much cream/ dairy or fat sources are best steered clear off.

How Intermittent Fasting With Bulletproof Coffee Works

The basic principle of intermittent fasting is this: After 12 hours of holding on to fat, the body allows it to be released. By skipping one meal, or in this case enjoying bulletproof coffee for breakfast, a longer fast of 18 hours gives the body 6 hours to usher out fat and cleanse the liver.

Our digestive system is allowed to rest, which allows the body to remove fat cells and toxins!

As Tom Cowan says in his article for the Weston A. Price Foundation, in those final six hours you are creating an anti-inflammatory, anti-insulin and glucagon-rich environment. Its probably the best anti-aging strategy you can adopt. Cowan continues by saying that caffeinated coffee does not alter the hormonal process of intermittent fasting and may even help it.
