Can You Drink Coffee On The Keto Diet

Is Black Coffee The Only Option On The Keto Diet

Can you drink coffee on keto?

The best choice on the keto diet will always be to drink your coffee and tea plain. However, if you simply cant enjoy your morning cup of coffee without anything added to it, you have a few options available to you.

To understand which coffee add-ins are keto-friendly and which are not keep the basic premise of the keto diet in mind. The goal of the keto diet is to eat a high-fat, low-carb diet, with a heavy focus on real foods. Therefore, if an add-in is high in healthy fats, low in carbohydrates and comes from a real food source, theres a high chance you can consume it in your coffee.

What Is Keto Coffee Anyway

The short answer: keto coffee is just coffee with added fat.The longer answer: keto coffee is regular coffee with low-carb, high-fat foods like coconut oil, butter or ghee added, in order to boost its fat content.

You may be wondering Ghee? Whats that? So instead of losing you to Google or Wikipedia, lets take a brief detour and explain, since its a terrific ingredient to use in keto coffee.

The Basic Keto Coffee Recipe

The basic recipe for keto coffee is simple, once you have the necessary ingredients. Blend:

  • One cup of hot coffee
  • 1-2 tablespoons of MCT coconut oil
  • 1-2 tablespoons of ghee unsalted grass-fed butter

That was easy. Once you try it a few times, the taste will grow on you, too.

You can add collagen powder for added health benefits and energy, vanilla extract or cinnamon for taste, even cocoa powder to make a mocha coffee essentially, feel free to play around to make your keto coffee taste just the way you want it to, as long as all the ingredients are keto-friendly.

Coffee Creamers And The Keto Diet

We already know that adding milk to coffee is a bad idea when youre on the keto diet. Thankfully, there are many great alternatives.

One of the best is a milk by-product, heavy cream . Heavy cream is the top layer of fat thats skimmed from milk before homogenization, and its low-carb when compared to milk.

Theres another benefit to consider. Keto isnt just a low-carb diet, its also a high-fat diet an important fact thats often ignored. And heavy cream is contains lots of fat, making it a great addition to a ketogenic eating plan. Be aware that its also calorie-dense, though, so it should only be consumed in moderation.

Many types of non-dairy milk are even better keto substitutes. Unsweetened nut milks like almond milk, macadamia milk and coconut milk, seed milks like hemp milk and flax milk, and pea protein milk are all very-low-carb. Theyre yummy too, once you get used to them.

There are some non-dairy milks to avoid, however. Avoid carb-heavy grain-based alternatives like oat milk and rice milk, and skip lactose-free, sweetened and flavored milks which all contain added sugar. Soy milk isnt bad in terms of carbs, but it may affect hormone balances.

What about dairy-free or non-dairy creamers? Good question.

For example, Super Coffees gluten-free Super Creamer contains both MCT oil and monk fruit sweetener plus added protein, just like the companys flagship ready-to-drink coffees. Its a recipe inspired by one of the crazes of the low-carb era, keto coffee.

Personal Experience On Caffeine And Ketosis With My Keto Diet

From personal experience I see no negative impact on ketosis from consuming caffeinated beverages, I drink probably too much coffee, the odd energy drink, and caffeinated sodas from time to time and still maintain a state of ketosis.

The best way to know whether or not what youre drinking or eating is throwing you out of ketosis is to test yourself with a blood ketone glucose meter like this one here about 45 minutes after consumption.

It must also be noted that one guys experience doesnt form the basis of credible scientific research, that my friends would be bro science. So its for you to make the decision about what is best for you.

I drink coffee and sodas because I like them, caffeine certainly isnt purposely put into my diet for any nutritional benefit, and if you can do life without it, I say, good on you.

What I can say for sure is, if you:

  • Add sugar or consume caffeinated beverages with sugar in them that they will throw you out of ketosis. So NO SUGAR. If you must sweeten your coffee, use a natural sweetener such as xylitol or stevia. You can read more about natural and artificial sweeteners here.
  • NO MILK that means skim too, particularly if you have several coffees throughout the day as the carbs will add up. You can replace milk with unsweetened full fat cream, just enough to taste. Full fat cream will also provide energy in the form of fats.
