Take one tablet of Plan B orally as soon as possible within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse or a known or suspected contraceptive failure. Efficacy is better if the tablet is taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. The second tablet should be taken 12 hours after the first dose. Plan B can be used at any time during the menstrual cycle.

If vomiting occurs within two hours of taking either dose of medication, consideration should be given to repeating the dose.

How Long Do I Have To Take Plan B For

Plan B One-Step consists of one pill, which should be taken as soon as possible after having unprotected sex, missing a contraceptive pill, or contraception failure.

The pill can be taken with or without food, and should be swallowed whole, preferably with water. Plan B should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, for a higher efficacy rate.

What Is Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception is a method used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected vaginal sex or when your method of birth control fails. Depending on the type of emergency contraception, it may be effective up to 5 days after unprotected sex, but it is most effective within the first 12-24 hours. It is intended for emergency situations and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections .

There are three main types of EC, and this page will focus primarily on ella® and Levonorgestrel.

ella®

  • 85% effective up to 120 hours after unprotected sex
  • Requires a prescription

Levonorgestrel

  • 89% effective up to 72 hours after unprotected sex continues to reduce risk of pregnancy up to 120 hours but with decreasing effectiveness.
  • Available without prescription
  • 99.9% effective up to 120 hours after unprotected sex
  • Requires a prescription and a visit to a health care provider for insertion
  • Provides ongoing contraception for up to 10 years
  • See IUDs for more information.

The Plan B Implantation Controversy

During Plan B’s approval process, its manufacturer asked the FDA to remove the implantation piece from its label. It is not completely clear why the FDA chose to keep it there.

Most of the research done during the approval process focused on Plan B’s active ingredient, the progestin hormone levonorgestrel. The research looked at the hormone’s safety and its effectiveness at preventing pregnancy. These studies did not explore how Plan B works.

The FDA may have decided to include implantation on Plan Bs label because this is one of the ways birth control pills work. Birth control pills containing levonorgestrel or a different progestin change the lining of the uterus. The FDA may have decided that because the pill may do this, Plan B might, too.

But there are two things to keep in mind:

  • Even if the pill does alter the endometrium, the changes have not been proven to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.
  • More importantly, research shows that the single levonorgestrel dose in Plan B doesnt cause any changes to the lining of the uterus.

According to those involved in the Plan B approval process, the FDA thought it was important to include on the label the possibility that Plan B works “theoretically … by interfering with a number of physiological processes.” This is why it included a list of all the possible ways that Plan B works.

One: It Outright Sucks

There’s this feeling I used to get after a night of hard drinking where I wake up hours before my alarm, feeling like a raisin inside an empty fish bowl, cartoonishly dehydrated.

It always comes with a pang of nausea that climbs up from my toes, sending waves of sweat pouring from all over and making falling back asleep impossible. This used to be my body’s way of being like âYou done f*cked up, now you gon’ puke.â

Waking up to that feeling after zero drinks was even worse. When you don’t drink much and you feel hungover, it feels extra sad, like you missed the fun and only got the consequences. I hunched over, skulked to the bathroom, and cried while the other side effects of barfing and extreme cramping began to take hold.

What Are The Downsides Or Health Risks Of Emergency Contraception

  • EC will not provide protection from sexually transmitted infections .
  • EC is not intended for regular use and is not as effective as other forms of birth control. Talk to your health care provider about other long term options that may be right for you.

You may have some negative side effects while using EC. Nausea and vomiting are the most frequent side effects. If you are worried about feeling nauseous or vomiting, you can use anti-nausea medicine about one hour before taking the pill. You may also want to eat a snack or drink a glass of milk before taking the pills to reduce nausea.

Other side effects may include: breast tenderness, irregular bleeding, abdominal pain, fatigue, dizziness, or headaches.

Are There Other Ec Pills You Can Take

Ella

If youre looking for an EC pill thats more effective longer after unprotected sex, consider ella.

Its known as an ulipristal acetate pill. It works by delaying or preventing ovulation.

Most importantly, it is said to remain consistently effective when taken up to 5 days after unprotected sex, reducing the risk of pregnancy .

Its also more suitable for people with a higher BMI or weight. The only drawback is that you need a prescription to get hold of ella. Plus, it can be pricier than Plan B.

Copper IUD

Theres one other type of EC, but it doesnt come in the form of a pill.

A copper intrauterine device can be inserted into the uterus to prevent fertilization up to 5 days after unprotected sex.

Its if inserted within a 120-hour timeframe.

Of course, youll need to book an appointment with a healthcare professional to get an IUD.

But the best part is that you can use it as a regular form of birth control afterwards.

What About Ella Pills

Unlike Plan B, Ella should only be taken once during a menstrual cycle. Its not known whether its safe or effective to take this pill more frequently.

You also shouldnt take other birth control pills that contain progestin for at least 5 days after taking Ella. Your birth control pills can interfere with Ella, and you could get pregnant.

Ella is available only by prescription from a healthcare provider. Its more effective at preventing pregnancy than other EC pills.

While you should take Plan B as soon as possible within 72 hours of having sex without a condom or other barrier method, you can take Ella as soon as possible within 120 hours .

You shouldnt take Plan B or Ella at the same time or within 5 days of each other, because they could counteract each other and be ineffective.

What Medicines Affect How Well Plan B Works

These medicines or supplements can make Plan B and other levonorgestrel morning-after pills not work as well:

The antibiotic Rifampin

The antifungal Griseofulvin

Certain HIV medicines

Certain anti-seizure medicines

The herb St. Johns Wort

You can ask a nurse, doctor, or pharmacist about any medications youre taking, and they can help you figure out if Plan B is a good option for you.

05 December, 2018

Plan B is one of the brand names of emergency contraception pills, or ECPs, available in the U.S. market as of 2011.

Although it originally required several doses, the manufacturer is phasing that option out to focus on “Plan B One Step,” a single-dose regimen. Plan B contains the hormone levonorgestrel and is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure.

Q: When Is It Ok To Take It

Lucash: Plan B should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It’s up to 95 percent effective if taken in the first 24 hours after unprotected sex and up to 89 percent effective if taken less than 72 hours after unprotected sex.

It’s still shown to be somewhat effective up to 96 hours after unprotected sex, but doctors recommend the user take Plan B as soon as possible, as its effectiveness does decrease quickly with time. It works by preventing a person from ovulating it won’t prevent an already-fertilized egg from implanting into the uterine lining, and it won’t cause an abortion.

Plan B and other progestin-only emergency contraception methods are most sensitive to the user’s weight they’re most effective for folks who are 170 pounds or less.

Precautions While Using Plan B

It is very important that your doctor check you closely to make sure this medicine is working properly and does not cause unwanted effects.

Although you are using this medicine to prevent pregnancy, you should know that using this medicine while you are pregnant could harm the unborn baby. Your doctor may give you a pregnancy test before you start using this medicine to make sure you are not pregnant. If you think you have become pregnant while using the medicine, tell your doctor right away.

You may have some blood spotting a few days after taking this medicine. If the bleeding continues for more than 1 week, check with your doctor right away.

This medicine may make your next monthly period later than expected by a few days. If your next period after taking this medicine is more than 1 week late, check with your doctor right away for a pregnancy test.

This medicine will not protect you from getting HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections. If this is a concern for you, talk with your doctor.

Your regular birth control method such as birth control pills or patch may not work as well while you are using this medicine. After using this medicine, you must use two forms of birth control. Use birth control pills or patch together with another form of birth control, such as a condom, diaphragm, or contraceptive foam or jelly, during any other times that you have sex in the same monthly period you used this medicine.

The Most Effective Form Of Emergency Contraception Isnt A Pill

Its actually the copper IUD, which has the added bonus of offering pregnancy protection for up to 10 years. If inserted within five days of unprotected sex, its extremely effective at preventing pregnancy , says Trussell.

Science still isnt sure exactly how it works, but the really high effectiveness implies that its probably a combination of preventing fertilization and preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall. The hormonal IUD might work too, but that research is still being done, says Trussell. Of course, use this option only if you actually want the copper IUD , and talk to your doctor to make sure youre a good candidate.

Does The Plan B Morning

Plan B

The morning-after pill is super safe, and Plan B side effects arent super common. There have been no reports of serious problems out of the millions of people whove taken it.

After you take the morning-after pill, it’s totally normal for your next period to be different from what youre used to. It may come earlier or later, and be heavier, lighter, or more spotty. Or it may be the same as it normally is.

You may get an upset stomach, feel lightheaded or dizzy, or have tender breasts for a short while when you take the morning-after pill. If you throw up within two hours of taking the pill, it won’t work and youll need to take it again.

You Can Take It Again And Again And Again But You Shouldn’t Use It In Place Of Regular Birth Control

You can even take it twice in one month if you need to, says Dweck. Theres no research to show that it has any long-term effects on your health or fertility. Repeat use is not a safety issue at all, says Trussell. That said, its definitely not as effective as having a reliable, continuous method of birth control . Plus, its way more expensive when youre talking about cost per sex. And again, it does NOT protect against any STIs condoms are the only way to limit your exposure to those.

Is Plan B Effective For People Over 165 Pounds

Unfortunately, it’s important to note that Plan B isn’t equally effective for everyone further limiting options for many in accessing emergency contraception. According Planned Parenthood, levonorgestrel pills may not work for people who weigh 165 pounds or more.

If you weigh more than 165 pounds, a morning-after pill containing ulipristal acetate, or Ella, may be best for you. However, unlike levonorgestrel morning-after pills, you will need a prescription to buy Ella.

Ella can reduce risk of pregnancy by 85% if taken within five days after unprotected sex , Planned Parenthood says. If you’ve already taken Ella but later need emergency contraception again for unprotected sex in the following five days, you will need to take Ella again not a levonorgestrel pill. Levonorgestrel is a type of progestin , whereas Ella is a progestin blocker.

“What you shouldn’t do is combine Plan B and Ella,” Shah said. “They have opposite methods of action, so they can, in theory, negate each other.”

If you weigh 195 pounds or more, Ella still might not be as effective, according Planned Parenthood. A copper IUD, which can be used as another form of emergency contraception if inserted up to five days after unprotected sex, may be a better option. Talk to your doctor about what is best for you.
