3 Best Coffee Substitutes (that taste like coffee)

This herbal tea has been drunk in South America for centuries, and for good reason. The flavor, which is slightly more earthy and floral than coffee but less bitter, is delicious. If youre about the health benefits, know that yerba mate is full of antioxidants and contains more caffeine than some teas but less than coffee, so its great for people that need a gentle energy boost without the crash. Its also incredibly easy to make: Put a teabag in your cup, then steep it in boiling water for at least five minutes. I like to top mine off with frothed milk and stir in a teaspoon of brown sugar.

Four Sigmatic Chaga Mushroom Elixir

This company is making their caffeine-free alternatives to coffee with chaga mushroom powderchaga mushrooms are those weird black things that grow on birch trees. Weird, maybe, but this is a cult favorite coffee replacement. I found that it tastes surprisingly similar to coffee, and regular drinkers insist that it imparts some sort of mental clarity. Oh, and it’s got antioxidants, and the packaging is pretty. Sign me up.

Organic India Tulsi Teas

Theres nothing new about this brands flagship herb, Tulsi aka holy basil aka the Queen of Herbs. The ayurvedic adaptogen has been used to promote calm and clarity in the mind, immunity and detoxification in the body, and an overall sense of well-being for centuries in India.

The Tulsi Focus line, launched last October, also benefits from bonus nootropics gota kola and bacopa and adaptogens ashwagandha and shankpushpi . There are four functional flavors. Coffee is definitely great in moderation, but sometimes consuming too much caffeine can cause side effects that are not ideal, like jitters, nausea, or even insomnia. Fortunately, if youve been on the lookout for coffee alternatives, there are plenty of options available for you to try. Of course, not every choice is going to taste like coffee , but it can still provide you with a delicious drink that will replace your morning cup of joe.

On the other hand, there are a few options that taste surprisingly similar to coffee, which is excellent news for people who dont want to miss out on the nostalgic flavor that coffee provides. Here is a guide that goes over some of the most popular coffee substitutes on the market. They are listed in no particular order all of them are noteworthy!

Less Popular Coffee Substitutes

Pin on Homestead

Depending on the economic situation, people have used other plants, grains, nuts, and roots to make coffee substitutes. Some of them are good, but they are not very popularized, some of them are OK, and it really depends on ones taste.

One of these alternatives is acorn coffee. The oak nut was a popular choice in periods of war when coffee was not available, and other substitutes were also in shortage.

Beechnuts also make a nice drink when roasted and ground as you would with coffee.

We can also brew a great drink from other healthy alternatives such as sweet potato, okra seeds, persimmon seeds, peas, and beans.

Wheat bran is also a great substitute for coffee, and Postum the very popular drink from Kraft, was based on wheat bran. For those who miss Postum, there is good news. The all-American coffee substitute is back on the shelves. Elizas Quest Food bought the trademark from Kraft Foods and brought it back on the market. You can buy it online on postum.com.

Health Benefits And Downsides Of Chicory Coffee

First of all, chicory is caffeine-free. As such, if you need to limit your caffeine intake, it is a better coffee substitute than decaf. Other than this, this coffee may lower blood sugar and reduce inflammation. Thats because the root contains inulin, which manages blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. Dr. David Perlmutter, a famous neurologist who researches the impact of nutrition on the brain , says:

Inulin represents an important source of fuel for our gut bacteria, allowing them to create life-sustaining chemicals like short-chain fatty acids that play so many important roles in keeping us healthy.

On the other hand, if youre allergic to ragweed and birch pollen, you should avoid chicory. Chicory itself can cause some allergic reactions such as pain or swelling. Pregnant women shouldnt consume it either because it can cause miscarriage or menstrual bleeding in some instances .

Ramon Seed Coffee Substitute And Roasted Carob Coffee Alternative

Mayan Nut or Ramon seed.

Scientifically the Maya nut is not actually a nut, but a drupe, sort of like a tiny coconut. The cool thing about Ramon seeds is that they do not contain tree allergens like almonds, walnuts, and pecans because they are the seed of a fruit, not a tree nut.

The Ramón tree is a member of the fig family, which also includes mulberry trees they grow in Central American rainforests.

I love to combine Ramon seeds with another coffee substitute Roasted carob coffee alternative. Even though each of them can be brewed separately, I think they are a great complement to each other. My favorite way to brew Ramon and carob coffee alternatives is by using a French press.

Teeccino Dandelion Herbal Teas

Caffeine Free COFFEE SUBSTITUTES | BEST COFFEE ALTERNATIVES that taste like coffee

Im riding the Rasa wave until I burn my dang tongue off. This stuffmade from chicory, burdock, and dandeliontastes vaguely of dark butterscotch. Like a Werthers Original that fell in the fire. Its not a perfect coffee imitation, but its a good adaptogen-packed alternative for people who like a dark, complex blend or want a late-night espresso without the tweaks. Ill fill up my French press and sip on it all morning long.

Dandy Blend Instant Herbal Beverage With Dandelion

Dandy Blend is an instant beverage, easy to prepare, delicious, and healthy. This is actually one of my favorites, as a health product. As a coffee substitute, its fine, just like most of the other substitutes presented here. Dandy Blend contains dandelion roots, chicory, beets, barley, and rye. It tastes good, most people say it can be consumed straight, without creamer or sugar, and it is cost-effective and convenient.

On the health side: dandelion root is probably one of the most used herbal medicines in the world. Chicory comes right behind it. The two are loaded with prebiotic fiber, which is the best way to increase immunity and relieve a lot of modern-day conditions. Drinking Dandy Blend is the best way to enjoy a non-caffeinated healthy drink. It contains a lot of essential minerals, and prebiotics, . The product is gluten-free, check the side effects section, though.

Four Sigmatic Ground Mushroom Coffee

Unlike the other drinks mentioned above, Four Sigmatic actually does have coffee in it, but, like the others, it also has mushroomsnamely chaga and lions manethat the brand claims help with keeping energy levels smooth and steady. It comes in a variety of different applications you can get it ground, as a Keurig K Cup, or in instant coffee form. The ground coffee with lion’s mane was very smooth and very flavorful, and if you follow the directions on the package, then youre in for a delicious cup of alternative coffee.

This felt and tasted the most like a regular old coffee out of all the bunch. It does give you quite the lift, but not the type to cause a negative effect on my anxiety levels. Four Sigmatic says its a balanced brew for brain and body, and to be fair, it was pretty balanced.

But, one thing I must stress. The instant coffee was fairly disappointing, which I guess is no surprise since instant coffee generally sucks and as a rule, should be taken as the title suggestsinstantly. Theres no savoring. All Ill say is that I would suggest opting for the ground coffee.

Golde Cacao Turmeric Latte Blend

Pero coffee substitute is a 100 percent natural caffeine free drink ...

If you blindfolded me and served me any one of Teeccinos herbal teas, Im not totally sure I could guess it wasnt coffee. Made from roasted carob, chicory, and dandelion root, these herbal bevs have every bit of the coffee flavor, with none of the caffeine. The dark roast is the closest dupe, but the caramel nut, coconut, and mocha mint varieties took me right back to my university days when I was obsessed with adding flavored syrups to my skinny flat whites. Buy a sampler pack and pick a tea bag out willy-nilly for a fun morning roulette. Something to look forward to!

How To Make Toast And Orzo Coffee Substitute

Ingredients

With the solubile type of Orzo, theres no need to premix and add to the milk or water, you can just add it directly to the cup full of liquid , but if you dont have solubile, youll want to make it the way I show below.

Heat the desired amount of milk in a small pot. When the milk is beginning to get hot, add the orzo and whisk well.

Continue to stir over medium high heat until mixed well. Add sugar to taste, if desired. I like about 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in mine.

Serve hot in a cup or mug, or if making breakfast for a child, break up pieces of toasted bread into a bowl. Next, pour the orzo over it.

Serve orzo coffee substitute immediately, or for a very young child, let cool slightly. Enjoy!

What Does Chicory Coffee Taste Like

If the roots are fresh and you roasted them and ground them correctly, your chicory root coffee should have a similar taste to regular coffee. Due to its groundy taste, it is especially similar to Robusta. However, it has a sweeter aroma.

Famous food blogger Hank Shaw describes the chicory root coffee in his article:

Straight chicory coffee is some powerful stuff. It tastes like it is loaded with caffeine, but it isnt. It looks like a motor oil, has that malty-chocolate aroma, a brighter acidity than coffee, and a flavor I really am having trouble describing other than earthy.

Blume Matcha Coconut Blend

Its not fair to call this an instant kind of coffee or a coffee alternative, but in terms of its function, it is very similar. Anyone who loves a frothy, energizing matcha latte will love Blume. Like with the other coffee alternatives, this one is said to help you stay steady and energized without all that agonizing rollercoaster-like plummeting. It’s vegan, sugar-free, and organic, with just three ingredients: matcha, powdered coconut milk, and moringa, a plant packed with vitamins and antioxidants which is also purported to be anti-inflammatory and great for your skin and hair, among other things.

You add to hot water, stir, and add ice . It was delicious, but it’s important to note that matcha can have pretty similar levels of caffeine to coffee it just tends to be stretched out over a longer period of time for a more steady and long-lasting effect. If you’re super caffeine-sensitive to the point where tea is out of the question, this is probably not the stuff for you, but if you’re more trying to hack your energy levels throughout the day, this could be a great option.

As a side note, when opening the packet, you may find not only green powder, but white powder as well. My first reaction was that this was some huge smuggling front. But dont fret, its just powdered coconut milk.

Barley Herbal Tea Coffee

Coffee Substitutes: Tasted and Explained

Best Coffee Substitutes In 202: Healthy Alternatives That Taste Like Coffee

Drinking a cup of coffee is not about the caffeine jolt for me. Yes, the morning cup feels nice, and caffeine works greatly first thing in the morning. But my second, and sometimes the third cup cant be caffeinated. I just need the nice feeling of a coffee without the caffeine. And decaf just doesnt work for me, I dont know why. I just dont like it. I dont drink tea anymore, caffeinated or not, so I was looking for a solution. I love chicory and coffee, and thats a great substitute for my second cup, but coffee and chicory is still strongly caffeinated. The best tasting ratio is around 20% chicory, 80% coffee. So this wasnt it. This is how I started to look for a good-tasting coffee substitute.

Cutting down on caffeine wasnt the only objective, though. I also wanted to replace it with a healthy alternative. I basically wanted a herbal tea that tasted like coffee. Not an easy task. To be honest, I have had coffee substitutes before, so I knew what to expect. I thought, however, that the new products would taste better. It was a mixed bag, youll see in a bit why. The nicest surprise though was the healthy aspect of some of these products.

Chicory For Weight Loss

Chicory acts as an appetite suppressant due to its high concentration of inulin. Inulin is a soluble fibre and can give you a feeling of fullness, without raising blood sugar levels or increasing calories. Its for this reason you will often see inulin as an addition to many meal replacement shake powders.
