How To Make a Starbucks Iced Green Tea Matcha Latte

Lets take a quick look at each matcha latte ingredient.

Milk

Starbucks uses 2% milk to make iced green tea lattes, unless you request otherwise. Keep in mind, substituting another milk for 2% changes the drinks fat content, sugar content, flavor and overall creaminess.

Ice

Did you know that Starbucks uses triple-filtered water and ice for all its drinks?

Since ice is a big part of any iced tea latte, using filtered water to make the ice is ideal. Otherwise, it can really ruin the lattes flavor.

My new refrigerator has a built-in water filter . However, a Brita water filter pitcher works great, too.

Sweetened Matcha Powder

Starbucks uses a sweetened matcha powder for all their matcha drinks. The matcha powder has two ingredients, sugar and Japanese green tea powder.

Therefore, in order to make a true copycat Starbucks matcha green tea latte, you should use sweetened matcha powder.

Does Iced Peach Green Tea Lemonade Have Caffeine

Yes, it does. It comes from the green tea concentrate.

According to Tazo.com, the Tazo Zen Tea has about 31-45 mg of caffeine in 8 ounces, when prepared with one tea bag.

This recipe uses two tea bags in 8 ounces of hot water, so it has 62-90 mg of caffeine from the green tea concentrate, when usingTazo Zen Green Tea.

Teavana Jade Citrus Mint Green Tea has about 16-25 mg of caffeine in 8 ounces, when prepared with one tea bag.

Once again, the green tea concentrate in this Starbucks copycat recipe is made with two tea bags in 8 ounces of hot water.

So, when using Teavana Jade Citrus Mint Green Tea, this Iced Peach Green Tea Lemonade has about 32-50mg of caffeine.

What Equipment Do I Need

At a minimum, youll need a jar, a saucepan, and a spoon.

However, for the best results I recommend investing in a bamboo matcha whisk , thermometer, and a milk frother.

I havent found anything that works better than a bamboo matcha whisk for whisking the matcha smooth without lumps. Ill show you a way to do it without one below, but it can be frustrating.

You can froth your milk using a jar or a regular whisk, but for the best results I recommend using an actual milk frother. This is the milk frother I use.

Where To Find Starbucks Drinks Without Coffee On The Menu

  • London Fog Tea Latte
  • Royal English Breakfast Tea Latte

Tea lattes bring together strong concentrated tea with milk and are available hot or cold.

Theyre worth considering if you want a caffeinated drink that has body to it, but isnt coffee.

Starbucks chai latte drinks are made from concentrated black tea infused with lots of spicy flavors.

Whereas, matcha drinks at Starbucks are made using a sweetened green tea matcha powder.

The remaining two lattes are brewed on-the-spot with tea bags, milk and syrup.

A steamer is nothing more than flavored steamed milk topped with whipped cream.

A steamer never has tea or coffee in itâjust milk, syrup and toppings!

Sometimes, this hot drink is simply called a crème or syrup crème.

Even though the year-round menu only lists plain steamed milk and vanilla crème, dont think those are the only flavors you can get.

A Starbucks steamer can literally be made with any flavor syrup they have on-hand.

During the holidays you can even get steamers like a Chestnut Praline Crème or Caramel Brulee Crème.

Speaking of milk, you can also get cold milk or chocolate milk at Starbucks. The barista can make it in a Starbucks cup or they also have individual milk boxes in the refrigerator case.

A little known secret, Starbucks has lemonade.

While its mainly used to add into iced tea and Refreshers, you can a get a simple glass of cool, crisp lemonade.

How Does The Starbucks Green Tea Latte Look And Taste Like

Iced Green Tea Latte

The answer to this question is there in the name. The Starbucks green tea latte looks bright green. I mean, its named green tea, what do you expect? The iced matcha latte has a grassy and smooth taste. Green tea also has a great umami taste. It also has some bitter notes, but the vanilla syrup adds a sweet taste and a great aroma to the latte.

This Is A Money Saving Starbucks Copycat Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte

I have actually tried the Dunkin Donut iced matcha latte before but it was a little off. It was a tad bit too sweet and didnt have enough matcha flavor to balance out the sweetness for I decided to stick with Starbucks

Until I realized that I can make the exact same Starbucks matcha drink in the comfort of my own home and save a few dollars too! This drink recipe, not only saves you money but also saves you time.

it takes me about 1 minute to make this green tea latte from start to finish because I have made it so many times. Ok lets say itll take you 2 minutes if youve never made it at home before. But thats still a whole lot faster than going to that horrible Starbucks Drive through line.

Every time I drive by it its longer and longer!! Especially now that people cant go in and sit, no one want to leave their car. I got a better one for you, how about you dont leave your house at all and get the same quality drink in 1-2 minutes!

Simple Swaps For This Recipe

There are a couple of things you can easily swap in this recipe, in case you don’t have all ingredients to hand.

  • Plant Milk: I personally love making this drink with oat or coconut milk, but you can simply swap this for your favorite milk. Delicious options would be almond milk, which will give the latte a nuttier flavor, and also soya, which is a more flavor-neutral option.
  • Vanilla Syrup: you can swap the sugar-free syrup for another vanilla syrup you have to hand. Instead of vanilla syrup, you can also mix maple syrup and vanilla extract and mix it into the drink. Or simply make your own from scratch!

Can I Use A Different Sweetener

Yes, any preferred sweetener will be good in this drink. If you dont need it to be paleo or vegan, then feel free to use whatever you like.

I used 1 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup plus a touch of vanilla, but its up to you how you prefer to sweeten this latte. If you dont want to use the vanilla, you can leave it out.

You can use sugar, simple syrup or honey if you prefer, and you can sweeten it to taste.

You can add more or less sweetener and adjust it to your taste!

Making this at home gives you the freedom to use the ingredients that best suits your dietary needs.

What Is Matcha Powder

Matcha powder is a type of ground up green tea that is usually grown in Japan. I did not know this before, but after doing some research, I found out that during the last few weeks of the growth of the green tea, the lea leaves are shaded to increase their chlorophyll content. Thats what gives it that bright and vibrant green color.

After the harvest the leaves are ground up into a fine powder to make tea and many other recipes using matcha.

Copycat Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte Recipe

Mmm...iced green tea latte.

Posted by Jessica Pinney on April 17, 2017

This copycat recipe shows you how to make your own Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte at home with just three ingredients.

I love this drink sooooooo matcha!

Okay, thats it for the matcha puns. I promise.

Im a simple gal when it comes to my caffeine drinks and generally not a lover of crazy coffee drinks or over the top Starbucks creations.

However, I fell in love with this drink many years ago when I worked for a production company here in Los Angeles. Ive never been able to shake my love for it.

These days I make it at home several times per week.

Its super easy to make and all you need is milk , matcha powder, and vanilla syrup.

I make mine a little fancy by using this vanilla bean simple syrup. Starbucks uses this vanilla syrup.

I personally prefer the caffeine buzz I get from matcha versus coffee. No jitters and Im more focused. Some people even use it as a dietary aide because it suppresses your appetite.

To mix the green tea latte, I like to use my handheld milk frother. It is hands done one of my favorite kitchen tools that cost less than $10. I also used it to make my Lucky Charms Cereal Milk Latte.

If you dont have one, mixing with a regular ol spoon works great.

Update: Im adding a few tips and techniques that can help you make your matcha lump free!

Version : Making Iced Matcha In A Blender

Step 1: Preparation

Place all ingredients into a blender: plant milk, matcha powder, vanilla syrup. For best results, add the liquids to the blender first, and the matcha powder last. This way, the powder will not get stuck in any corners at the bottom of your blender.

The same applies if you’re making this drink in an electric milk frother. Before using one, make sure it can create cold froth as not all frothers have that option. I personally use the milk frother from Dualit, which is brilliant and can make both hot and cold froth.

Step 2: Blending

Blend the iced matcha latte on a high-speed setting for 1 minute or until smooth and frothy.

Step 3: Serving

Add your ice cubes to a tall glass and pour in your iced matcha. Serve your iced matcha latte cold and enjoy the refreshment.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy to make. You only need 4 simple ingredients to make a matcha latte: matcha powder, water, milk and sweetener.
  • You can adjust the level of sweetness. What I love about making a matcha latte at home is that I can control the level of sweetness. This recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of simple syrup to closely replicate the matcha lattes at Starbucks , but you can adjust the sweetener to taste.
  • Less caffeine than coffee. One teaspoon of matcha powder has about half the caffeine of a cup of coffee. Perfect way to start your morning or as an afternoon pick-me-up without the hard crash.

Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte Recipe Notes And Tips

  • Keep in mind that there are different grades of Matcha. There is Cooking Grade, Latte Grade and Ceremonial Grade options to choose from. For this recipe, I would suggest the Latte or Ceremonial Grade as the cooking grade has a more bitter taste and isnt the vibrant green that you will want for your drink.
  • This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled and stored in a glass container with lid in the refrigerator for up 3 4 days.
  • I would recommend using Whole or 2% milk for your latte since they have the right balance of fats, proteins, sugar, and water to make the latte smooth yet not too creamy.
  • A blender is the best tool to use for blending your latte but you can also use a frother or hand mixer or immersion blender to mix up your latte. Another option is to place the ingredients in a glass jar or container with lid and shake vigorously.
  • If you are using matcha in your beverage for the first time, reducing the amount of powder slightly and increasing the sweetener just a bit might be a good idea. Matcha can be a little overpowering if you are not accustom to it.

How To Make Matcha Iced Latte

To prepare the simple syrup:

  • Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan.
  • Heat the saucepan over medium-high heat.
  • Stir until all the sugar dissolves completely in the hot water.
  • Cool to room temperature and transfer to a container with a lid. Store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
  • To assemble an Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte:

  • In a tall glass or mixing bowl with a spout, combine milk and matcha powder.
  • Stir or whisk well until there are no lumps and the matcha powder is fully dissolved. If the matcha powder doesnt dissolve completely, warm the milk for 15 seconds in the microwave. Alternatively, you can blend it in a blender.
  • Stir vanilla extract into the matcha mixture. Taste for sweetness before adding any simple syrup. Depending on which matcha powder you use and your personal preferences, you may need more or less than the recipe calls for.
  • Pour the Matcha Green Tea Latte over ice and serve.
  • Different Grades Of Matcha

Matcha can be consumed as loose tea leaves or in tea bags or pulverized into a fine dust that can be drunk hot or cold.

The two grades of matcha are ceremonial and culinary grade. Both come with a different purpose and a different price tag.

Ceremonial grade is of the highest quality and is ground into a fine powder with granite stone mills. Its the most expensive.

Culinary grade is lower in quality and cheaper. It can be quite bitter and gritty.

Costco carries a large bag of matcha that is certified vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO. And you get 225 servings from just 1 bag so you can drink up!

If you havent tried matcha before, know that it has a distinctive taste that grows on you. Its earthy, and somewhat grassy.

I think that using enough sweetener is important. Maybe its just me, but without just the right amount of sweetener, I find matcha unpalatable.

You might want to start small with a nice ceremonial grade to try it until you know you like it enough to start buying bulk.

Just be sure to store it properly.
