One Of The Earliest Signs Of Poor Brain Function Is Poor Gut Health

Frequently, the gut can be one of the first places poor brain function manifests.

Declining memory, an inability to find words, difficulty learning new things, and brain fog are often accompanied by increasing difficulty digesting foods, constant bloating and gas, or alternating constipation and diarrhea.

In fact, Parkinsons disease has been found to affect the gut before the brain. Chronic constipation occurs years before a Parkinsons patient develops tremors. Medicine is now acknowledging chronic constipation as a possible early warning sign of Parkinsons.

If your gut symptoms are getting worse, you need to take your brain health seriously.

It may not be Parkinsons disease, but it certainly suggests possible early brain degeneration and declining function of the gut-brain axis.

Exercise Your Vagus Nerve With Coffee Enemas

In functional medicine we use a variety of exercises to make the vagus nerve stronger. Like muscles, neurons need constant stimulation to stay healthy and strong.

If you break your arm and wear a cast, those muscles shrink within a few weeks from reduced activity. Neurons are the same. Without regular exercise they lose function.

Vagal exercises are easy to perform at home. I commonly prescribe these exercises to my patients who have poor vagal tone and gut-brain axis failure:

    • Gargling aggressively several times a day
    • Stimulating the gag reflex with a tongue depressor on the back of the tongue several times a day
    • Singling loudly several times a day
    • Coffee enemas several times a week

The first three of these exercises activate tissues in the back of the throat that are connected to the vagus nerve.

    Enema Equipment And Insertion

Coffee Enema: Is It An Effective Detox Method?

Stainless steel enema buckets and silicone enema bags with silicone hosing are the least toxic set-ups to use and worth the extra money. They will minimize the leaching of toxins into the enema coffee. Latex and soft plastic enema bags are not recommended. Disposable plastic enema kits are not recommended for this reason and due to their environmental impact, except perhaps occasionally while traveling and pressed for time. Whatever material you use for a container, minimize the time the coffee sits in it to minimize leaching of toxins into the coffee.

Some enema bags come with a hose that is rounded off on the end with side holes that can be inserted into your colon. This serves as a nozzle. Other set-ups require that a nozzle or colon tube be installed on the end of the hose. Never insert the cut-off end of a hose into your colon.

The enema protocol described here is NOT a high enema, where you are trying to get fluids high into your colon, so you do not need the water pressure that comes from hanging the bag up high. You only want the coffee to settle in the sigmoid area of the lower colon where it will be absorbed into the blood circulating directly to your liver.

    What The Research Says

Theres no scientific evidence that proves or disproves that coffee enemas are helpful to treat any medical condition. Evidence for or against the use of coffee enemas is mostly anecdotal. In mainstream medicine, colon cleansing is considered unnecessary because your bodys digestive system is capable of getting rid of waste, toxins, and bacteria on its own.

The theory that colon waste is toxic to your body is known as autointoxication. According to a 2014 article published in The Journal of Lancaster General Hospital, there isnt any evidence to support this theory.

    Getting The Right Flow

The common misconception here is that the bucket/bag needs to be super high to flow . The reality is you just need it above the level of your hips and you can control the speed of the flow by lifting your arm up and down. Make sure as you near the end that you gently tip the bucket towards you to avoid any air bubbles. If you see an air bubble form, gently lower the bucket to reverse the flow until it goes back in. While its still down, tip the bucket to remove air bubbles and pick it back up. Youll usually feel a bit of a rush as the water starts flowing. Sometimes the coconut oil can be blocking the coffee from flowing, if this happens just readjust until you feel the flow. Enemas can take anywhere from 2-10 minutes, so dont get discouraged if you need to go slow!

    Talking To Your Doctor

Please talk to your Integrative/Functional MD about adding in this protocol before you start. When I was going through the Lyme, I had to do a coffee enema daily for 2 years just to survive and make it through my day. Yes, thats how bad it was. AND thats how amazing the relief was every day. But I stopped the enemas last year when I started to feel better. Why? Because theyre a lot of work and they also deplete your colon from nutrients that you need, which is why you should only do a coffee enema if its needed for detox. Now, I do a coffee enema on Saturday and/or Sunday to detox me from my week and keep my body humming along! I dont crave them or need them like I did, which is amazing and magical all at the same time.

So, now that youre armed with the WHY I did coffee enemas to keep me from jumping out a window with the amount of Die-off I had, Ill share HOW to do it so you can try this at home, if desired.

You should have seen the look on my parents face when I told them this is why I was making coffee on their stove-top one morning when I was at their home. Ha. Theyve come around, to say the least. There were days when I was too sick to get out of bed and my mother would make the coffee for me because she was amazed at how I bounced up and into life as soon as I did it. She called it The Exorcist. It was wild to say the least

Now, when clients come to me with toxic symptoms, this is the very first thing we do because the results are profound!

How This Interesting Practice Came To Be

How to prepare and do Coffee Enemas

Enemas have been around for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians detailed the protocol on ancient sheets of papyrus. Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, also strongly encouraged them. There are even mentions of enemas on the Dead Sea scrolls as a way to purify the body and soul.

Using coffee became a more widely popular practice starting in World War I. They were reportedly used for pain reduction during the war when meds were scarce. The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy even considered them as standard health care treatment until 1972.

Most recently, proponents of alternative medicine are turning their attention back to coffee enemas as a means of detoxification.

And I totally get it because I was terrified at first! Coffee enemas are not for everyone . It took me a while to get the hang of them but the rush of clarity you get afterward is unlike anything else! Now it is a form of self-care for me. I do them once or twice a month, or when Im feeling really run-down. If you arent comfortable doing them, then dont! If you are curious, then try it! Theres nothing to be scared of, really.

There are many forms of detox and coffee enemas happen to be one of them, and maybe even my favorite . But you can do an enema in the comfort of your home and its a much cheaper option.

Everyday, we are exposed to environmental toxins, parasites, bacteria, pollutants, preservatives, heavy metals, pesticides and other cancer-causing chemicals. We breathe them in, ingest them or absorb them through the skin through direct contact. These toxins then get stored and trapped in the tissues and cells of our body and can have harmful cancerous, reproductive, metabolic and mental health effects.

    How A Coffee Enema Works

    Coffee Enema for Liver Detoxification

The very last part of the colon, before reaching the rectum, is in an “S” shape and called the sigmoid colon. By the time stool gets to this part of the colon, most nutrients have been absorbed back into the bloodstream. Because the stool contains products of putrefaction at this point, there exists a special circulatory system between the sigmoid colon and the liver.

There is a direct communication of veins called the enterohepatic circulation. Have you ever felt sick just before having a bowel movement, when stool material has just moved into the rectum for elimination? As soon as the material is evacuated, you no longer feel sick. This is due of the toxic quality of the material and the enterohepatic circulation coming into play. Because of this, it is important to evacuate when you have the urge. The rectum should usually be empty.

This circulatory system enables toxins to be sent directly to the liver for detoxification, rather than circulating them through the rest of the body and all of its vital organs including the brain. This system of veins carries rectal/sigmoid toxins directly to the liver for detoxification.

Coffee enemas consist of the administration of warm coffee via the rectum into a patients intestines. They are popular, not least because they cause profuse bowel movements and thus lead to immediate relief of constipation and therefore to short-lasting weight loss.

Coffee enemas are promoted for detox under the erroneous assumption that that the content of our colon is toxic, an obsolete theory known as autointoxication. Other notions assume that coffee enemas have beneficial antioxidant effects or stimulate the liver. Supporters of coffee enemas also claim they are effective treatments for:

    • boosting immunity
    • excreting parasites from the digestive tract
    • removing heavy metals from the body
    • alleviating depression
    • treating cancer

Coffee enemas can cause adverse reactions some of which can be severe and have even caused fatalities:

    • electrolyte imbalances
    • dehydration
    • bowel perforation

This new systematic review was conducted to investigate the safety and effectiveness of self-administered coffee enema and to provide evidence about its benefits and risks.

Nine case reports that describe adverse events were identified and included in the analysis. The reported problems included:

    • colitis,
    • cardiorespitatory arrest, followed by death,
    • hepatic failure, followed by death,
    • vomiting, dyspnoea, followed by death.

No study reporting on the effectiveness of coffee enema was found.

Secondly, while your enema coffee is simmering, you can start getting your area ready for the coffee enema.

  • Set up a space to do your enema. You’ll need to pick a place where the enema bag can be hung overhead, like near a door. There are various places you can do this, but the most practical is on your bathroom floor, to make clean up easy if you happen to have an “accident”. Try to make it as cozy and relaxing as possible by laying one or two large old towels on the floor that you wouldn’t mind getting stained if the enema coffee spills on it. You can even get a small pillow or roll up a towel to use as a pillow to support your head so you’ll be comfortable.
  • You will also want to have a small glass jar of organic coconut oil handy to use when you start the enema.
  • Make sure you have a timer, watch or phone with a stopwatch so you can make sure you leave the enema coffee in for at least 15 minutes. You can also get anything else you might want to make the time relaxing like a book, music, etc.

Who Should Not Use Coffee Enemas

Even though coffee enemas are gentle and beneficial, there are a few groups who advised against them. Pregnant moms and children younger than five can use other enemas, like salt water, but are advised against coffee enemas. Breastfeeding moms may want to exercise caution here, too.

Those with severe bowel dysfunction, like Crohns disease, should take special precautions with coffee enemas. Similarly, those with hypertension, ulcerative colitis, renal/heart/respiratory failure, and those who are currently undergoing chemotherapy should exercise caution and consult with a health practitioner before beginning a regime of coffee enemas. As always, consult with your doctor to determine if coffee enemas should be an option for you.

    Benefits Of Coffee Enema

The purpose of coffee enemas is to remove toxins accumulated in the liver and to remove free radicals from the bloodstream.

In the 1920s, two German professors tested the effects of infused caffeine on rats. They found that the caffeine travels via the hemorrhoidal vein and the portal system to the liver, opens up the bile ducts and allows the liver to release bile, which contains toxins.

The theobromine, theophylline, and the caffeine in coffee dilate blood vessels and bile ducts, relax smooth muscles, and increase the bile flow.

Doctors at the University of Minnesota showed that coffee administered rectally also stimulates an enzyme system in the liver called glutathione S-transferase by 600%-700% above normal activity levels.

This enzyme reacts with free radicals in the bloodstream and makes them inert. These neutralized substances become dissolved in the bile, are released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and are excreted through the intestinal tract.

Coffee enemas are held in the colon for 12-15 minutes. During this time, the bodys entire blood supply passes through the liver 4-5 times, carrying poisons picked up from the tissues. So the enema acts as a form of dialysis of the blood across the gut wall.

There are multiple benefits of Coffee Enema, but lets look at a few that Ive found during my own research.

    • Boosts body immunity

    • may help in treating cancer

    • dilate blood vessels and counter inflammation of the gut

How Do To Do A Coffee Enema

The best time to do a coffee enema is in the morning, after you’ve had your first bowel movement.

Begin by preparing your coffee enema solution as outlined above. Allow to cool to 98.6 degrees F.

Close the stop valve on your enema tubing and then add the cooled coffee enema solution to your enema bucket. Next, prime the tubing by slowly opening the stop valve over the sink to get the air out of the tubing. Close it once the coffee reaches the end.

Place the enema bucket about 2 feet above you so the solution will flow slowly into you.

Lie on the floor with towels under you or you can even climb into your bathtub.

Lubricate the tip of the enema tube with organic aloe lubricant . I like to use this organic aloe. Insert the tube into the rectum 5 to 8 inches. Be sure to relax and allow it to easily push in. Never force it.

There is a little bump inside us a few inches into the colon, make sure the tube gently goes over that bump further into the colon.

Open the stop valve and allow the solution to slowly flow into your colon. If you go slowly you will avoid cramping.

If you are worried about cramping, you can also open the clamp slowly and allow some to flow in and then stop it and wait a bit. Do a little at a time until you have all of the solution in.

As the solution goes in, you can slowly turn over on your right side with your legs pulled up to your chest and stay in the position for the duration of the enema.
