Making cold brew is a time-intensive process. Cold brew is more about the method of preparing the coffee than the serving temperature of the coffee itself. For cold brew, you grind beans and steep them at room temperature for an extended period, typically between 12 and 16 hours. This produces a cool pot of coffee with an even, smooth taste.
Iced coffee is what were talking about. You take a hot cuppa and you turn it cold. You can brew the coffee as you normally would, using your favorite brewing method, and then you introduce it to ice via methods described below, to slightly dilute the flavor without eliminating it.
Why Should You Cold Brew Your Coffee
This coffee-making method has a few things going for it:
- The slow infusion pulls all the great coffee flavor from the beans .
- But it also leaves behind most of the compounds that can make coffee taste bitter and sour.
- This means that cold brewed coffee is incredibly smooth and almost sweet-tasting. Perfect for iced coffee.
You can also adjust the concentration of your cold brew coffee, making it stronger or less strong to suit your taste. Start with one cup of beans steeped in four cups of water. This will make a fairly concentrated coffee on its own, but it’s perfect for pouring over ice or mixing with milk – or both. If that ratio of beans to water isn’t quite to your taste, adjust it up or down until you hit the perfect balance for you.
I also really love that this method for making coffee actually saves me time in the morning. I make a big batch over the weekend, starting it on Saturday or Sunday night and straining it the next morning, and then stash it in the fridge for an easy coffee fix all week long.

How To Make Iced Coffee At Home With Cold Brew
In order to make iced coffee with cold brewing, all you need to do is brew whole coffee beans with cold water. After 12 hours or so, the coffee grounds will sink to the bottom of a jar. The coffee will be still be murky, but this is fine. Pour off the liquid and put it into the fridge for an hour or so to cool. Once cooled, pour the cold coffee drinks through a strainer to catch the grounds. Fill your coffee mug with ice cubes and pour the cold brew coffee over the ice cubes. If you like stronger coffee, then I recommend pouring the cold brew into your ice cube tray and freeze it. You can simply follow the recipe above without ice cubes in this case.

- Crushed ice this is what you see in this recipe. Because I had a ton of coffee to make I picked up a big bag of crushed ice and used it liberally. This is typically what I use for iced coffee
- Medium-sized ice cubes this is usually what people have on hand in their freezer and I say go for it!
- Large ice I like to use larger blocks of ice if I’m going to enjoy my iced coffee outside. They are slower to melt this way!

Other Methods I Tried
If you have the patience for pourover, try flash-brewing onto ice.
The best iced coffee for you depends on what style of coffee brewing you prefer overall. Im an espresso drinker, so its not shocking that I love the methods above. But if youre passionate for pour-over, you may want to try Japanese-style iced coffee in your Chemex or other dripper. Moser recommends substituting about 40% of your water with ice, which means for 12 ounces of iced coffee , youre going to use 25 grams of medium-finely ground coffee, 250 grams of hot water , and 150 grams of ice in the decanter that youre brewing into. He sets up the weighed ice in the vessel under the pourover filter, then starts with the first 65 grams of water and a quick stir, waiting 45 seconds to let the bed of coffee get saturated, then adds 80 grams more, then the last 115 grams. The ice that chills the brew will also dilute it to its proper strength. The whole process takes about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. To be honest, its more than I can handle early in the morning, though the flavor does a decent job of capturing coffees refreshing, fruity side.

Three: Serve Over Ice
Good news, the hardest part is over. Wilson describes the rest of the process as simply: Coffee in, ice over the top, milk, stir, but lets break that down a bit. Your shot of coffee goes in the bottom of a glass. Now its time to add the ice. You want to fill the glass between a third and a half with ice, to cool the coffee down. Your first few cubes will melt quickly, because of the heat of the coffee. The alternative method is to blend the ice, but this has its own pitfalls. As Harley says: Blended drinks just change the dilution of the coffee, so blending the ice with the milk and espresso turns it more into a slushie. If people want to blend the ice, they might want to consider increasing their espresso, maybe adding another double, so that once blended it tastes more balanced. But Im more of a cube purist. I like just to have a chilled drink, and not a blended one.
Brew Your Coffee As Usual
Brew your coffee as you normally would. Allow a bit more ground coffee if using regular ice cubes to make the drink stronger.
As for volume, that depends on the serving size.
Generally iced coffee comes in a large cup, but the cup is filled with ice more than halfway.
So if you were to serve in a 12 oz/354 ml cup, and half of it would be ice, youd only need about 6 oz/177 ml of actual brewed coffee.
Keep in mind that some ice will melt and raise the drink level, so the final product will be a bit more than your expect.

Variation: Vietnamese Iced Coffee
And now for something entirely different. Samebut different.
This is a variation on classic Vietnamese Iced Coffee, which actually does begin with a hot brewbut Im using the cold stuff.
Fill the glass with ice and coffee concentrate as we did before, then crack open a can of sweetened condensed milk.
