Caffeine In Coffee Vs Tea

Ask Gail: How Much Caffeine In Decaf Coffee?

Ah, the million dollar questionhow does the caffeine content compare in coffee versus tea?

Generally speaking, a cup of coffee contains around double the amount of caffeine compared to black tea, which contains an average of 95mg of caffeine per cup.

Like tea, several factors can influence the caffeine content of coffee. These factors include the type of coffee beans, the roasting process and the type of coffee.8

For example, a shot of espresso contains about 63mg of caffeine and a cup of instant coffee contains anywhere between 30 and 90mg of caffeine.

Official Decaf Coffee Classification

According to official regulations, coffee must have at least 97% of its caffeine removed, in order to be classified as . Which in turn means that no more than three per cent of the original caffeine remains in the beans, once the process has been completed. So youd naturally presume that coffee in general would have next to no caffeine in it.

In reality, this isnt always the case.

This is because caffeine content varies enormously from one bean to the next.; A prime example to illustrate the point being the way in which Robusta coffee beans typically have around double the amount of caffeine of the average Arabica coffee bean. Not only this, but caffeine content also varies from one specific species of coffee to the next.

So what this means is that while at least 97% of the caffeine may have been removed, this doesnt mean all coffee contains little to no caffeine. Or even the same amount of caffeine. The interesting thing being that with all examples of coffee, it isnt a legal requirement for the manufacturer to state the specific amount of caffeine per 100g of cup.; Ultimately meaning that those looking to avoid caffeine are largely kept in the dark, unless they make specific enquiries.

One of the biggest mistakes being made by many anti-caffeine coffee-fans being that of assuming that as theres no caffeine in their beverage, they can drink way more of it. In doing so, they often end up consuming far more caffeine than they realise.

The Amount Of Caffeine In Decaf Coffee And Tea

There are many reasons why you might choose to drink decaffeinated coffee or tea instead of regular. It could be for medical reasons or because you want to avoid getting the jitters or being up all night. It’s important to know that when you drink decaf beverages, you’re still putting trace amounts of caffeine into your system.

Roast Affects Caffeine Content

Contrary to some common myths and misunderstandings, there is actually not much of a difference in caffeine content between light and dark roast beans. Many people believe that lighter roasts are higher in caffeine than dark roast beans because the roasting process burns off caffeine. Thats actually not true! However, the roasting process does change the mass of coffee beans and causes them to lose water. So beans that have been roasted longer dark roasts have less mass than light roast coffee beans. This means that if you were to weigh 10 grams of light roast beans and 10 grams of dark roast beans, youd have just a few more dark roast beans than light ones. So depending on how you measure your coffee for brewing, your roast matters. If you measure your coffee by scoops then light roasts will result in more caffeine because they have more density. If you are measuring by weight, then dark roast beans will result in more caffeine content since they have less mass.If you dont have much of a preference between light and dark roasts and are trying to decrease your caffeine intake, it may be a good idea to think about how you measure and brew coffee and buy your beans accordingly.

Can Decaf Cause Insomnia

The Amount of Caffeine in Decaf Coffee and Tea

For most people, a few milligrams of caffeine are nothing, but doctors say those with blood pressure problems or kidney disease should limit their caffeine intake. Also, for certain susceptible individuals, even small amounts of caffeine can increase agitation or anxiety, which can trigger insomnia.;

One of the mistakes many people make is ignoring the fact that caffeine accumulates in the body using decaf doesnt mean that you can drink cup after cup! Another thing to keep in mind is that caffeine stays in the system for many hours. Just as people who drink regular coffee are advised to have the last cup for the day at least six hours before going to bed, people who are particularly sensitive to the effects of caffeine should not have even a decaf late in the evening.

When it comes to decaf drinks you can find in coffee shops, studies show caffeine contents vary quite a bit.

For instance, one study found that one shot of decaffeinated espresso at Starbucks had between 315.8 mg of caffeine, while a 16-ounce cup of decaf coffee had 1213.4 mg of caffeine.

History Of Decaf Coffee

The first attempts to decaffeinate coffee date back to the early 1800s. In 1820, Friedrich Ferdinand Runge isolated caffeine as the culprit that made coffee drinkers experience insomnia. His first attempts to extract the caffeine from coffee beans involved adding chemical solvents directly to roasted beans. It worked in removing the caffeine, but the flavor of the beans was also so adversely affected that the resulting coffee was undrinkable. His next idea was to grind the green coffee beans and extract caffeine that way, but then it was too difficult to roast pre-ground beans.It was a man named Ludwig Roselius who first developed a commercially successful way to decaffeinate coffee in 1906. Roselius found that he could make green coffee beans porous by steaming them, at which point he applied a chemical called benzene to extract caffeine. It worked, and we still use this basic process in some decaffeination methods today, though we no longer use benzene as it was later found to be a carcinogen.

These Chemicals Can Cause Major Health Issues

Methylene chloride is not a mild chemical. Dr. Rashimi Byakodi points to the way inhalation exposure irritates the nose, throat, and affects the nervous system.

“It’s believed to temporarily slow down our central nervous system,” says Dr. Ava Williams.

Perhaps most frighteningly, Dr. Byakodi says, “Methylene chloride is a possible mutagen and is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”

Chemicals aside, even just the process of decaffeination can be problematic. “Some studies have shown a potential risk for triggering rheumatoid arthritis,” says Dr. Olivia Audrey.

Dr. Williams adds that the process has been found to increase fatty acids that can affect metabolic syndrome and increase the risk of heart disease.

These chemicals can affect your nervous system, cause rheumatoid arthritis, and even present a cancer risk.

What Is Decaf Coffee

According to the USDA, any coffee labeled as “decaf” must not contain more than 0.10 percent caffeine based on the dry package weight. Coffee, which naturally contains high amounts of caffeine, reaches it decaffeinated state by going through a rigorous process, using one of three different methods:

The solvent-based process uses a trio of ethyl acetate, methylene chloride, and water to make a solvent that extracts the caffeine, but evaporates after the process to leave the coffee beans chemical-free.

The Swiss water process is the only method that’s organic for decaffeinating, using osmosis to remove the caffeine.

And lastly the carbon dioxide process, which is the newest and most expensive method, uses carbon dioxide to remove the caffeine while allowing other flavor compounds to remain intact.

Why Does Decaf Coffee Still Have Caffeine In It

This has to do with how caffeine is removed from;green;coffee beans. Even though there is a thorough process used to extract as much caffeine from;coffee beans;as possible, it is difficult to get every milligram of caffeine out of every;coffee bean. Therefore,;decaf coffee;still has;trace amounts;of caffeine present. You should know the exact number based on the nutrition facts of the coffee brand.;

Swiss Water Decaf Process

This is a chemically-free decaf procedure. It does not utilize any chemicals like methyl acetate or methylene chloride. It is a water-based procedure and it is naturally accredited.

The coffee beans are cleaned up and pre-soaked in water. This assists to broaden the beans and open the pores which permit caffeine extraction.

The green beans are then immersed in the green coffee extract . As the green beans are being in this fluid, the caffeine moves from the beans into the fluid. As soon as that is done the fluid goes through carbon columns, which are caffeine-specific. The carbon draws out the promoting representative out of the GCE fluid.

Once the fluid is without the revitalizing results it returns into the green beans and cycles backward and forward up until a specific target of caffeine is eliminated. The target might be around 99%. 1% of caffeine stays after the swiss water decaffeination.

What Is Caffeine And Why Is It In Decaf Coffee

Caffeine is a totally natural stimulant thats found in in the fruit, leaves or beans of coffee, tea, cacao and guarana plants.; Its a mild stimulant that boosts your alertness and energy levels, and is absorbed roughly 45 minutes after consuming, and it peaks in your bloodstream anywhere between 15 minutes to 2 hours.; In its raw form its a bitter white powder, and if you want the full technical term for it, its called 1,3,7 trimethylxanthine.; Now thats a mouthful.

Did you know that we consume over 100,000 tonnes of caffeine are year around the world?; Thats the equivalent weight of 14 Eiffel Towers.

Caffeine Content Of Decaf

The two main types of coffee are espresso and brewed coffee. A standard espresso drink, like a latte or cappuccino, will contain two shots of espresso, each with 75 milligrams of caffeine, for a total of 150 milligrams. This is true for grande and venti drinks at Starbucks. Tall espresso drinks contain a single shot.

A shot of decaf espresso contains about 10 milligrams of caffeine, so a grande or venti decaf latte will contain 20 milligrams.;

Turning to brewed coffee, a grande blonde roast drip coffee at Starbucks contains 360 milligrams of caffeine, and a Pike’s Place blend contains 310. You might be surprised to learn that brewed coffee contains more caffeine per drink than espresso drinks, but it’s true.;

Note that darker roast coffees have less caffeine, as the roasting process burns some of it off. Conversely, because the decaffeination process also removes flavor, decaf coffees are roasted longer and darker to make up for the lost flavor.;

That’s why there is no such thing as a decaf blonde roast. But a grande decaf Pike’s Place brewed coffee contains 25 milligrams of caffeine. One way of thinking about it is that it contains the equivalent caffeine of about two sips of a regular Pike’s Place .

  • A pounding, racing heart
  • A case of the jitters
  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Insomnia and restlessness

A caffeine sensitivity mustnt be confused with a caffeine allergy which is potentially very dangerous.

Other people might want to cut down on their caffeine, as regular consumption can lead to a caffeine tolerance which occurs when the effects of caffeine decrease over time with regular consumption.

In brief, this is why decaffeinated coffee exists, and this is why people should know how much caffeine there is in the decaf coffee theyre drinking.

How Is Tea Decaffeinated

There are a number of ways that tea is decaffeinated. Sometimes, the tea is soaked in methylene chloride, which bonds the caffeine molecules to the methylene molecules. While this method does provide good retention of the flavors in the tea, it is not necessarily believed to be the healthiest method of decaffeinating teas. Some countries do not allow tea to be imported if it has been decaffeinated using this method.

Another method commonly used is ethyl acetate decaffeination. The process of this method is similar to that of methylene chloride treatment, but it is a more natural alternative. Ethyl acetate naturally occurs in tea, and so is a safer method. Unfortunately, it is difficult to remove the taste of ethyl acetate from the tea after it has been treated and can leave a chemical aftertaste.

Carbon dioxide tea decaffeination is the safest method of tea decaffeination. This is the method all of Plum Deluxes decaf blends are made with. The process involves essentially pressure cooking tea leaves with the naturally occurring gas CO2. In this high temperature, high pressure environment, the carbon dioxide reaches a solvent state where it attracts and removes the caffeine molecules from the tea leaves. Since the molecules that hold the flavor of the tea are larger, they remain intact within the tea, leaving us with a decaffeinated tea that is safe and holds a great flavor.
