    Ways To Brew Espresso

I brew my espresso with my Nespresso machine. My goodness do I loooooove this machine! Its fast and theres no guessing game about how much water is needed because the pods have a barcode on them. The machine reads the barcode and adds only the exact amount of water that each pod requires for the espresso or coffee you choose.

    SO SIMPLE.

You could also brew the espresso in advance, like the night before, and let it cool. This way works just fine.

When I brew espresso to drink straight away or to make it in advance and chill, I like to use these little double-walled espresso glasses. They keep the espresso hot longer when I want to drink it hot, and colder longer when I refrigerate it. Theyre just like the Tervis tumblers but made of glass instead of plastic.

    Choose The Right Coffee

As I said earlier, our body doesnt perceive sweetness as well at low temperatures as it does at higher temperatures.

This means that some types of coffee will taste great hot but be overly edgy & bitter when chilled.

Typically, a light or medium roast coffee with lots of natural sweetness will give best results at lower temperature. In contrast, a dark roast coffee will often need a lot more sweetening to prevent it tasting smoky & bitter at lower temperatures.

In terms of specific varieties, I suggest looking for natural or honey processed single origin coffees or blends. The pleasing chocolaty, fruity sweetness of these varieties really seems to shine when served cold.

Some roasters even have specific blends designed to taste best when served cold

Of course, in the end theres no hard & fast rules. If youre brewing an iced filter coffee, the delicate acidity of a washed coffee can also be really tasty.

Do You Need An Espresso Machine To Make An Iced Latte

Caron likes to use an espresso machine when making milk-based drinks. Fully automatic machines can grind the beans for you, which can save you a step, making an easy drink even easier. Caron also notes that shots pulled with an espresso machine tend to be consistently balanced and have great flavor.

If you dont have an espresso machine, you can still make iced lattes at home. A stovetop coffee pot, like the Bialetti Moka Stovetop Espresso Maker will produce full-bodied, strong, espresso-style coffee. You could even make a strong brew in a French press that will result in a pleasant iced latte.

How do you make an iced latte at home?

  • First, you need finely ground coffee . If youre using an espresso maker, youll find that some do it all grind the beans, pack the grounds and make your shot but others require you to pull the shot yourself. To do so, youll fill a hopper with grounds and then tamp them . Then you can insert the portafilter and brew your espresso. If you dont have an espresso machine, opt for a strong French press coffee or stovetop coffeemaker drip coffee does not work as well as swap for espresso.
  • Once your shot is ready, youll need ice cubes are ideal as theyll chill the drink without making it too watery from the start. If you prefer crushed ice, just use less, since it tends to melt more quickly.

What Kind Of Milk Should You Use

You can use any kind of milk you want from whole to skim cows milk to almond, soy, or coconut milk. Or any kind of milk in between as long as you love it!

Heavy cream and half-and-half arent really recommended for lattes. Youll be adding 8 ounces of milk to your iced latte and the higher fat content in heavy cream and half-and-half doesnt make them a great option for this drink.

    Whats A White Americano

A traditional Americano recipe uses only espresso shots and water. The dark espresso taste can be hard too intense for some coffee drinkers so some people add o sweeteners or milk to their Americanos. A white Americano is one of these variations.

Its similar to a classic Americano, but it is topped with milk, hence the white in its name. The addition of milk creates a lighter and creamier drink, making it easier for those who find the espresso taste too strong.

    • First and foremost do not dispense the hot coffee directly into your base liquid. This will transfer heat and diminish the taste of your coffee when it becomes chilled. Rather dispense some coffee into a cup or jug, allow it to cool completely and then add it to a milk-based base liquid. The creaminess of the Espresso will complement the creaminess of the milk.

Remember to top off your iced coffee with some cream, a slice of lemon or even some cinnamon sprinkles to complement your specific flavour profile.

    Iced Espresso Further Exploration

    Iced Coffee Recipe

At CoffeeGeek, were completely adamant that espresso needs to be cooled down in stages when making iced versions of espresso based beverages. This same rule doesnt apply to brewed coffee that becomes iced, only espresso. Why is that?

We ran a series of tests in the CoffeeGeek Lab back in 2009 to see taste differences between espresso chilled the instant it was brewed , vs espresso that is cooled down in rapid stages , and the staged cooldown espresso always tasted better, even in blind tasting by visitors to the Lab.

We never quite figured out the science why, other than to speculate: it was about the crema. The crema of espresso, which is CO2 bubbles surrounded by oils, fats, and lipids from the extractions of the ground coffee, had a harsh chemical reaction and change when exposed immediately to ice. By cooling the beverage down in stages , you gave those oils, fats and lipids a chance to mellow and settle down without shocking them.

The last stage is ice lots of it and big cubes. To use a seasoned bartender trick larger ice cubes for chilling mean less dilution means we keep more espresso and less added water while chilling the drink down to a 2-4C temperature range.

Try this yourself try brewing espresso right onto ice, stir it vigorously, and drink. Then brew espresso into a chilled glass, stir it, then add ice and stir again and taste. Or add a step the steel milk frothing pitcher, which will leach away heat, then add to a chilled glass.

Iced Coffee Vs Iced Americano Vs Cold Brew

For the most part, there are three different ways to drink coffee cold: iced coffee, iced Americano, and cold brew. Each involves an element of extra strong brewing:

Iced coffee is regular coffee brewed hot at double strength and poured over ice, while an iced Americano is espresso and cold, filtered water poured over ice. Cold brew coffee is completely different, as its coffee that’s “brewed cold” i.e. steeped in cold water.

The end result of brewing iced coffee and making an iced Americano is similar, as expected . The differences are slight, and lie in the flavor profile. Iced coffee gives off notes of cola and caramel, while an iced Americano does not.

All of these brewing methods will give you varying amounts of coffee per cup.

Fun fact: The first instance of iced coffee dates back to 1840 in Algeria, to a sweetened coffee drink called Mazagran.

Whether youre looking for something chilling and subtly sweet to sip on to beat the scorching summer heat, or are looking for a way to impress your coffee-loving friends with your at-home barista skills, theres no better drink to try your hand at than the classic iced Americano!

    Whats In An Iced Americano

How to Make an Iced Mocha | Perfect Coffee

An iced Americano consists of espresso shots, water, and ice. The method is similar to a hot Americano, but often the ratio between water and espresso is changed. It is typically drunk without sugar or milk, however, every barista has their own recipe.

The origin of the Americano is said to have started during the Second World War. American soldiers who were stationed in Europe could not handle the bitter taste of Italian espresso. To make it more palatable, they diluted it with water, reducing the strength of the espresso. This gained the name Americano, which means American in Italian.

    Other Beverages With Espresso

Other than an iced latte, you can prepare many other recipes. We bring you morning, lunch and afternoon versions!

    • For the morning smoothie, try to lift energy with espresso. Prepare strong espresso in the espresso maker. In a blender, add 2 tablespoons of Greek yoghurt, one tablespoon of cream, 1 banana and cinnamon in powder. Pour with espresso and add maple syrup to preference. Mix well and it is ready to consume!
    • The lunch version of espresso should be strong, energetic and sweet for dessert. So, the cake is an ideal option! For tiramisu, you need to combine sugar and egg yolks over steam and whisk until it has a light yellow colour. Make whipped cream and add mascarpone cheese. Combine both mixtures and let them cool. Make a strong espresso and let it cool. Use serving glass with wide bottom. Soak ladyfingers in cool espresso. Place them on the bottom and cover with chilled cream.
    • The late-night espresso version is espresso martini. For this classic cocktail, you will need a cocktail shaker and martini glass. In a cocktail shaker add ice, one shot of vodka, one shot of coffee liquor, 2 tsp of sugar syrup and a shot of strong espresso. Shake well and pour into a martini glass. Garnish with coffee beans.

    How To Make Good Espresso

Good espresso should be made of quality roasted coffee. Coffee beans must be roasted and vacuumed to preserve taste. Once you open the bag, try to use it as quickly as possible. Ground coffee just before preparing the beverage and in quantity, you are sure to use. There are different possibilities for how to ground it, the most espresso machines have their own grinder. Adjust it to medium because too much coarsed or too small wont make a good final result. Use the desired quantity and press it into a permanent filter. Press the water to warm and be sure that the water in the tank is fresh. When the machine is ready, release coffee to drop for 20 to 25 seconds. If you drink it with milk, many coffee machines have an additional steamer to help you get perfect foam. For better results, ask the barista where you enjoy espresso to give you extra tips!
