Ingredients And Materials Needed For Oat Milk

First, you need at least a cup of Oats. The oats you chose to use will determine the outcome of the final product. Such that if you wish to make non-gluten milk, be sure to select gluten-free oats like these ones here from Quaker. You may get the whole uncut kind, and the least processed, also known as oat groats too. The second option is the steel-cut oats, which have been cut to appear like rice. They are the type that take the longest to cook and present a chewy texture feel when eaten. They are also known as Irish or Scottish Oats. Lastly, there is the rolled kind that looks like irregularly shaped flat disks. They are known to cook faster than the steel-cut type and are mostly used for baking and in the making of granola bars. How To Avoid Slimy Oat Milk

The number one complaint of homemade oat milk is that its slimy. But youre in luck. After testing more than 6 batches of oat milk, I have a few tips:

  • Use ice cold water: heat can make the oats more starchy and gummy , so use ice cold water or swap a cup of water for ice cubes when blending.
  • Dont overblend: if you blend the ingredients too long theyll start to warm, and youll run into the same problem I just mentioned above. Dont blend for more than 30 seconds.
  • Strain well: strain through a high-quality nut milk bag with a very tight weave. I hardly have any sediment in mine when I use this nut milk bag, but you could use dish towels as well. Just dont use a strainer or cheesecloth as its not tightly woven enough.
  • Dont over squeeze: as youre straining and squeezing the oat milk in the nut milk bag, be gentle. You dont want to squeeze firmly like you do with almond milk as youll squeeze out more of the starchy compounds.

Is It Safe To Drink Coffee With Oat Milk Curdling In It

Yes, it is perfectly safe for your health to drink coffee that is curdled with oat milk as long as the milk is fresh and not expired.

There are two types of milk curdling.

One is called as intentional curdling and the other is called as unintentional curdling.

Milk curdling is not bad or unsafe for your health as long as it is intentional in nature.

Here intentional curdling means the milk you use to add in your coffee is not expired or spoiled by any means.

The coffee you use is made from low acid coffee beans or no acid organic coffee beans.

If it is unintentional curdling then it might cause some health issues for you.

An unintentional curdling involves the use of spoiled or expired oat milk and adding it to the hot coffee with high acidity.

So, as long as you use low acid coffee and your oat milk is fresh and not expired, you can drink your coffee even if it gets curdled with milk or cream.

Tips To Make The Best Oat Milk Coffee

Homemade Oat Milk Recipe Zero Waste Coffee Talk
  • If you use instant or freshly brewed coffee, be sure it is very strong. 1/2 cup of freshly brewed coffee is enough for 2 oat milk lattes.
  • If you cant tolerate caffeine, caffeine free espresso and coffee can be used.
  • Use a thermometer to gauge the temperature of the milk when steaming it. The perfect temperature is 55C/130F, however, if you prefer an extra hot latte, you can allow it to reach 62C/144F.
  • Not all oat milk is created equal. Some can be quite flavorless and watery, and lose their natural sweetness once heated up. If your oat milk is sweet and creamy BEFORE in its room temperature/chilled state, it should maintain all the flavor and creaminess once heated.

Easy Methods To Avoid Oat Milk Curdling In Coffee

You can use 3 simple tricks to prevent oat milk curdling in your daily cup of coffee.

Those methods are mentioned as follows.

1. Use Organic No Acid or Low Acid Coffee Beans

Yes, the number one cause as mentioned above for milk or cream curdling in your coffee is the high acetic acid content of your coffee.

If the coffee beans you use for making your daily coffee contains high acetic acid, then it obviously interferes with the overall pH balance of your hot brewed coffee.

It easily interacts with lactic acid content of your coffee creamer and oat milk which gets added in it later on.

To prevent this milk curdling in your coffee, the number one precaution you should take is to use a low acid coffee beans or no acid organic coffee beans.

If you want to use no acid coffee beans for your coffee, then my recommendation is to use Tylors No Acid Organic Ground Coffee.

2. Clean Your Coffee Mug Properly

This is the number 2 factor which many folks dont pay much attention to while making their daily coffee.

If you do not de-calcify or clean your coffee mug properly, then the earlier coffee oil residue from the coffee mug interior can increase the overall acetic acid content of your hot brewed coffee.

This enhanced acid content then quickly reacts with the lactic acid of your oat milk which in turn causes milk curdling.

This is the reason why your coffee mug or kettle should be cleansed properly before you use it to store your hot cup of coffee.
