Add Coffee And Water To French Press

BODUM® How To Make French Press Coffee

Add the ground coffee into the French Press. Once the water reaches a boil, wait about 30 seconds before pouring onto the coffee. This will lower the temperature from boiling to around 200° F, which is ideal for brewing.

Start a timer and pour water onto the coffee grounds.

When you pour the water into the French Press there may be a bloom at the top where the coffee is either clumped or not making contact with the water. You can minimize that by pouring slowly in a controlled manner.

What Is The Best French Press

First things, first. What is the best French Press? We are personal fans of the Bodums French Press products. It is a tried and true French press that all three of us own and use. We love that its glass and that the handle doesnt get hot when you pour the water in.

In addition to Bodums French press, we also love their other coffee accessories as well! Check them out below.

French Presses With Insulated Carafes

I have to say, I think French presses with insulated carafes are a bad idea.

People often ask me what I think about Bodums double-walled, insulated French presses, such as the Bodum Columbia French press or the Bodum Arabica. If you use them as portable thermoses or something like that, then they make absolutely no sense. Thats because when you make coffee in a French press, you need to pour it out of the press right after it finishes steeping. If you leave it in the pitcher, the coffee grounds at the bottom will continue to release more flavors. Over time, the coffee will become bitter and acidic.

These presses would only make sense if you had a separate insulated pitcher or thermos that you could pour the coffee into. However, using the French press itself as a kind of thermos is not a good idea. Im on the record as being against warming plates or other devices that keep coffee warm for an unnaturally long time, but this is an especially bad case.

If youre drawn to a metal French press because it is more durable than a glass one, then it might be worth considering. It could even be a way to take your French press on your next camping trip. Just remember that the press isnt meant to be used as a thermos, and you will want to pour the coffee out and serve it as soon as its finished steeping.

Please dont buy these French presses if you are looking for a thermos!

The Final Word On How Much Coffee For A French Press

The amount of coffee you should use in a French press depends on how much coffee you are making. With standard measurements, you should use 2 tablespoons of coffee grinds for every 8 oz of water. If you are interested in making multiple cups of coffee, you need to multiply this ratio.

There are a number of factors that will play a role in the quality of your French press coffee. Make sure that you use clean, fresh tap water. Grind your coffee beans to the appropriate grind size right before you use them.

Finally, you can also play with the brewing times to see what flavor you like that.

The Pros And Cons Of French Press Coffee

French press makes coffee by steeping the grounds in hot water, and then pressing the grounds out.

After the drip coffee maker, its one of the easiest, least time-consuming ways to make a great cup of coffee. Also, unlike pour over and the Aeropress, it makes it easy to brew coffee for several people at once. But it is prone to bitterness and oiliness, since the coffee is sitting directly on the grounds for a period of time, and this can turn people off.

Whats The Right Grind Size For A French Press

  • Save

The quick and easy answer: somewhere between a coarse grind and a medium-coarse grind setting. Not sure exactly what that looks like? Here, have a grind size chart. To achieve these grinds youll need a good burr coffee grinder.

If you get pre-ground plunger coffee at the store, more often than not its freaking fine-ground too! WTF? Why is there so much confusion over the press pot coffee grind?

The basic rule of thumb with a coffee press is: the finer the grounds, the stronger the brew. The coarser the grounds, the weaker the brew. However, you definitely want to avoid going too far in either direction. If its too coarse youre going to get some weak-ass coffee. Too fine and it will become very bitter thanks to over-extraction.

Remember that its a good idea to grind your own beans immediately before making the coffee.

Summary: Bodum French Press Review

I simply have to give all five stars to this press, as long as were talking about the models with as little plastic as possible. They are wonderfully timeless and durable. Theyre not indestructible, though. Ive had to throw out a few presses because they broke, but never because they got worn out.

Still, Ive come across plenty of French presses that have been used continuously for over eight years, and they still look good.

I have different Bodum French presses in every size available, and I use them all. I dont necessarily use each one as often as every other, but when theyre not in use, they make a great-looking decoration on my kitchen shelves. They also fit in anywhere, from an old farmhouse to a modern apartment. If youre looking for a great gift idea, might I recommend a French press and a manual coffee grinder?

Regardless of what brand you choose, French presses are simply a dream to use. They give you wonderfully strong, flavorful coffee. You wont get black coffee this good from a super-automatic espresso machine. Plus, thats another great thing about French presses they are unbelievably affordable in comparison to many other coffee gadgets out there.

If you feel like trying out different kinds of coffee, French presses can also be your friend. Just use two different presses to try two different kinds of coffees. Thats what Ive been doing since 2008 for my coffee reviews.

In the meantime, you can still buy .

How Long Should French Press Coffee Steep

To recap from the instructions above, we first pour in a small amount of boiling water, stir, and wait. Then we pour in the remaining water and stir again, and wait.3-4 minutes is the optimal window of time to get an average strength cuppa out of a coffee press.

If you prefer lighter coffee, finish the batch off a bit early. If youre a fan of stronger stuff, give it more time. However, I wouldnt give it TOO much time, as you may ruin the coffee by allowing it to over-extract and get bitter.

Bodum French Press Coffee: Coffee Beans And Grind Size

I would recommend using a filter coffee, one that’s been specifically roasted for this type of brewing, instead of an espresso roasted coffee, for example, simply because the filter coffee will offer you a more balanced flavor in the cup. The first thing you want to work out is how many cups of coffee you’re going to be drinking as you want to be using around 12 to 15 grams or 2 tablespoons per cup or 250 grams of water. I’m going to be brewing 1 liter, so I’m going to be measuring out 50 grams of coffee.

Now, I’m grinding my beans to be between a medium or coarse grind but there’s really no right or wrong at the coarser end of the grinding scale when you’re brewing with a French Press. It’s really up to your taste, but note that by changing the grind size, you can have the biggest impact on the flavor of your coffee. So if your coffee does taste a little too bitter at the end, perhaps try grinding coarser. Or if it’s too weak or even sour, grind finer.

The Taste Of French Press Coffee

Bodum Chambord Copper French Press, 8 Cup

Why does French press coffee taste so good?

One reason is that the ground coffee has direct contact to water for a relatively long time. This gives you a strong, full-bodied coffee with just a touch of grittiness. Thats a huge contrast to the thin, weak coffee that you often get from a conventional drip coffee maker.

In other words, you are getting coffee with good, strong flavor.

You are also getting that delicious coffee without having to pay an arm and a leg for it. You just need the French press itself, along with a water kettle and, if at all possible, a coffee grinder.

If at first you find French press coffee too strong for your tastes, try scooping out the coffee grounds when they are done steeping, but before you push down on the press. That should give you milder coffee. If you still believe that you dont like French press coffee, then I have two questions for you:

  • Did you use good, fresh coffee?
  • Was the coffee coarse and freshly ground?

If you answered no to either, then I suggest trying it with good, fresh coffee that is ground freshly and coarsely. If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then I also would say that you dont like French press coffee.

  • Start With a Coarse Grind. Brewing with a French presslike this Bodum modelis fundamentally different from a pour-over method. With pour-overs the water passes through a filter, but with the press the ground coffee actually steeps in the water.
  • Fill the Carafe Halfway, Then Wait. When the water reaches a boil, take the kettle off the heat and let it cool for 30 seconds. Now your water’s ready time for your first pour.
  • After 60 Seconds, Stir the Grounds with a Spoon. While you’re waiting, check Twitter, text your mom and think about how great this coffee’s going to be.
  • When the Timer’s Done, Plunge. Once the timer hits the four minute mark, it’s time to plunge. The press shouldn’t offer too much resistance, but make sure the mesh filter is lowered evenly.
  • That’s ItGreat Coffee. And, well, that’s it. Pour out your perfectly brewed French press coffee immediately into mugs or a serving vessel, as any additional time spent in the carafe will continue the brewing process.
