Other Methods I Tried

If you have the patience for pourover, try flash-brewing onto ice.

The best iced coffee for you depends on what style of coffee brewing you prefer overall. Im an espresso drinker, so its not shocking that I love the methods above. But if youre passionate for pour-over, you may want to try Japanese-style iced coffee in your Chemex or other dripper. Moser recommends substituting about 40% of your water with ice, which means for 12 ounces of iced coffee , youre going to use 25 grams of medium-finely ground coffee, 250 grams of hot water , and 150 grams of ice in the decanter that youre brewing into. He sets up the weighed ice in the vessel under the pourover filter, then starts with the first 65 grams of water and a quick stir, waiting 45 seconds to let the bed of coffee get saturated, then adds 80 grams more, then the last 115 grams. The ice that chills the brew will also dilute it to its proper strength. The whole process takes about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. To be honest, its more than I can handle early in the morning, though the flavor does a decent job of capturing coffees refreshing, fruity side.

Cold Brew Coffee Ratio

For every 1 cup of water you will want to use 1/4 cup of coffee. You can scale the recipe up to make as much cold brew as you want, so long as you stick to the ratio of 1/4 cup coffee per 1 cup of water.

I usually make my cold brew in quart size mason jars and 3 cups of water plus 3/4 cup coffee grounds fit perfectly in a jar.

You can use whole coffee beans and grind them yourself to a coarse grind or purchase ground coffee. Ive measured coffee beans both before and after grinding and the volume doesnt change much with grinding, so use 1/4 cup of coffee per 1 cup water either way.

Tips For Making Cold Brew Coffee

  • Ive read that its best to use coarsely ground coffee for cold brew. Ive tested this recipe with both coarsely ground coffee and more finely ground coffee that I purchased at the grocery store. Both make delicious cold brew, so dont worry if you dont own a coffee grinder. The most important thing is to use a type of coffee that you really like.
  • For the best flavor use filtered water to make your iced coffee.
  • You can use decaf coffee or half decaf and half regular in this recipe.

Basic Iced Coffee Method Two

Brew enough coffee to fill an ice cube tray, using the same amount of ground coffee as you usually use to make hot coffee. Pour the coffee into the tray and freeze it. When the cubes are ready, brew fresh regular-strength coffee and allow it to cool. Put the coffee ice cubes in a glass and pour cooled coffee over them.

You can use leftover coffee to make coffee ice cubes and store them for later use. If you dont plan to use the ice cubes within a few hours, transfer them to a freezer storage bag that seals tightly.

Iced Coffee Method: Aeropress Coffee Made With Room

  • Time: 2 minutes
  • Overall rating: 3/10

About this method: The people who love the Aeropress really love it . Aeropress is a cylindrical device that on one end has a filter and basket for coffee. Water goes into the vessel and then another piece plunges the water through the filter directly into the cup. For hot coffee, you use hot water; for iced coffee, you start with room-temperature water. Once you pour water into the vessel, stir the coffee grounds and water for 1 minute, then plunge the contents into the cup. Add enough room-temp or ice-cold water to make 1 cup of coffee.

Results: While I appreciate how fast you can have your hand on a cup of iced coffee, this is a very lightly brewed coffee. The color was so light similar to iced tea. It was actually the lightest of all the brews. What did take me by surprise was that despite how light the brew was, the coffee itself had some really nice flavors come through.;

My takeaway: This is a great method for the people who prefer a lighter, less intense cup of coffee. I felt that the overall flavor was really nice, but would have liked to let the coffee grounds steep a little longer to get more or, alternatively,;to start this as a warm cup that I cooled down. This also is not a cold brew for a person who wants to add their favorite milk or alt milk. I found that the coffee flavor was muted enough as is.

How To Make Iced Coffee At Home With Cold Brew

In order to make iced coffee with cold brewing, all you need to do is brew whole coffee beans with cold water. After 12 hours or so, the coffee grounds will sink to the bottom of a jar. The coffee will be still be murky, but this is fine. Pour off the liquid and put it into the fridge for an hour or so to cool. Once cooled, pour the cold coffee drinks through a strainer to catch the grounds. Fill your coffee mug with ice cubes and pour the cold brew coffee over the ice cubes. If you like stronger coffee, then I recommend pouring the cold brew into your ice cube tray and freeze it. You can simply follow the recipe above without ice cubes in this case.

Not Diluting The Concentrate

The standard time for steeping, says Phillips, is 24 hours. Be aware that will result in an intensely flavored coffee concentrate. When youre ready to drink, dilute it with water . When made according to the 1 pound:1 gallon ratio, your cold brew will contain roughly twice the amount of caffeine as hot drip coffee. Phillips suggests cutting that 50/50 with water. Not only will that keep your caffeine consumption at bay, it will mitigate the bitterness.
