How Do You Make Simple Coffee Step By Step
Why Should You Make Cold Brew Coffee
Cost: You need only to look at the cost of one cold brew – at a coffee shop or in a bottle – to understand the answer to this question. Even if you buy one of our recommended cold brew makers, you’ll still save in the long run.
Time Saved: Instead of brewing coffee every morning, you can make a big batch all at once and then stash it in the fridge. It’ll be waiting for you whenever you need a caffeine boost.
No Bitter Flavor: Cold brew is known for its characteristically smooth, non-bitter flavor, much less bitter than other coffee. That’s because when coffee is made in a pour over or drip coffee maker, the hot water extracts bitter flavor from beans. With cold brew, there’s no hot water.
Customization: Another plus making your own? You have total control over the dilutionyou can make it weaker or stronger depending on your preferences.
Health Benefits: In emerging research, scientists have found links between cold brew and immune health. In addition, if regular coffee upsets your stomach, you might be able to enjoy cold brew instead because of its lower acidity. Grind The Beans Coarsely
Heres the only fussy thing about making cold brew coffee: you should take care to use coarsely ground beans. A fine grind can slip through the sieve you use in this method and create a gritty, cloudy end product.
The grind you want is extra coarsea slightly larger grind than youd use for a French press or percolator. If youre buying your beans from a café, simply tell the barista that youll be making cold brew they will know exactly what to do. If youre using the grinder at the grocery store or at home, opt for the coarsest setting.

Toddy Cold Brew System

Choosing The Coffee Beans
While a French press or pour-over method may shine a spotlight on high-quality, single origin blends, cold brew may not. This style of making coffee requires a large amount of grounds . “I recommend choosing a less expensive blend that has dark, warm, or earthy notes, such as chocolate, warming spices, or nuts,” says Easto. If you’re in a pinch, she’s even a fan of combining leftover beans, or beans that are past their prime in terms of freshness. “One of the great things about cold brew is that it’s very forgiving. It’s probably one of the best ways to optimize less-than-stellar beans,” she adds.

What Type Of Ice Is Best For Iced Coffee
I know this may not seem important but choosing the right ice for your iced coffee is key! Here are your options:
- Crushed ice this is what you see in this recipe. Because I had a ton of coffee to make I picked up a big bag of crushed ice and used it liberally. This is typically what I use for iced coffee
- Medium-sized ice cubes this is usually what people have on hand in their freezer and I say go for it!
- Large ice I like to use larger blocks of ice if I’m going to enjoy my iced coffee outside. They are slower to melt this way!
Cold Coffee Without Blender
If you do not have a blender, then simply make this in a mason jar or shaker bottle. Make the coffee mixture in the jar and then pour the chilled milk. Secure it and shake it for 1 to 2 minutes. Take care not to over do as you may end up with butter separated on top.
The other way is to simply make the coffee in your serving cup and then pour the chilled milk. Use a milk frother and froth it until you see some froth on top, typically for 1 minute.

How Do You Make Iced Coffee
Youll need a tall glass and a spoon long enough to reach the bottom of that glass.
Fill that glass full to the rim with ice. If you really want to get serious about your iced coffee, you can make ice cubes out of coffee too. Then you wont get that watered-down effect. And if youre into that flavored sort of coffee then go for it.
Pour room temperature coffee into the glass.
Fill it almost to the top.
Pour in the white stuff. Heres where you get to make a big decision. Do you want to go all out and make this a decadent treat? If so, then add cream or half & half. If you want to go a little lighter, use whole milk or fat-free half & half. And lighter still, use nonfat milk.
Take a moment to watch the swirls sink to the bottom and mix in with the coffee. Its a magical moment. ð
Add a couple spoonfuls of sugar or whatever sort of sweetener you usually add to your coffee. In the recipe notes below, I share how to make sugary simple syrup in case you prefer to use that instead of granulated white sugar.
Stir it all up!
Add a purple straw. If youre a straw person, that is. And drink up!

First grind your coffee. You will need 1 cup of coffee grounds to make 4 cups of cold brew coffee. Grind your coffee to a medium to course setting. So you will want your grounds looking more like bread crumbs or course salt, no smaller than the size of granulated sugar. Avoid getting the ground too much like a powder.
In your large bowl/jar fill with 4 cups of cold filtered water. Sprinkle the coffee grounds evenly over the top of the water. Let the coffee bloom on top of the water for about 30 to 60 seconds . Stir together.
Cover and transfer to the refrigerator. Let rest 12 to 14 hours for best results.
Layer cheese cloth into a mesh strainer and place over a large bowl/jar. Strain the cold brewed coffee into the cheesecloth. Strain twice for extra smoothness. Keep your cold brew coffee concentrate covered in the fridge, keeps up to two weeks.
To serve pour over ice, find your perfect ratio of added water, milk, and/or sugar to the concentrate.
Most people recommend a 50/50 water down of the the concentrate with either ice/water/milk. Personally I would say I am more of a 2/3 coffee 1/3 mix-in person but that is the beauty of cold brew my friends!

Cold Brew Coffee Recipe Tips
- Fresh is best. Whether youre making hot coffee or cold brew, freshly ground beans will always yield the best flavor. Why? Grinding coffee beans releases their oils. These oils are what add complexity and depth to a cup of coffee. After you grind coffee beans, these oils begin to dry out. As a result, you want to use coffee beans right after you grind them, when their oils have just been released and their flavor is fresh.
- Grind the coffee beans coarsely. That way, theyll be easier to strain out of the coffee.
- Adjust the ratios to taste. One of the reasons I love making cold brew at home is that its easy to adjust each cup of coffee to taste. If Ive made a particularly strong batch of cold brew, I dilute each glass with more milk or water. If its less strong, I just add a splash. Dont hesitate to add more coffee, water, or milk to create a flavor and intensity you love.
How To Make Cold Brew Coffee Without A Cold Brew Coffee Maker
If you don’t have a dedicated cold brew coffee concentrate maker, you can mix everything in a big container to allow the coffee to brew. You’ll then need to pour the cold brew coffee concentrate through a filter when it’s ready.
For example, you can set it up using a v60 coffee brewer if you have one. Alternatively, many recipes will suggest using a French press coffee brewer.
I don’t recommend either of these methods because as mentioned earlier, when you pour out the coffee concentrate because you agitate the coffee grounds and risk releasing bitter compounds into your coffee.
Additionally, with the French press, the filter typically does not catch all the coffee grounds, so you end up with cold brew coffee that doesn’t taste as clean .
So, it is definitely worth investing in a proper cold brew coffee maker!
You’ll be able to make fresh cold brew coffee at home easily and you’ll save money by not needing to buy store-bought cold brew again – either in concentrate form from the grocery store, or from a coffee shop.

How To Make Iced Coffee
Are you ready to learn how I make the perfect fresh-brewed cup of cold coffee? It’s easy!
Here’s my trick for the perfect iced coffee … the first thing I do every morning is brew a regular cup of coffee. Then, before I jump in the shower, I stick my mug of coffee in the freezer.
While I’m showering, putting on makeup, and doing my hair, my coffee is cooling to the ideal temp. I use a cute mason jar mug, but any kind works. By the time I’m ready, my coffee is the perfect chilled temperature, and I can add sugar, milk, and ice without watering it down.
You could also add the sugar to the hot coffee before chilling it, if you don’t want any crystals in your coffee. I actually like the crunch of a few crystals. Using simple syrup instead of granulated sugar is another option.
Tip: want to save time in the morning? Brew your cup of coffee the night before, then pop it in the refrigerator so it’s ready to drink when you wake up. You could also do this with a full pot of coffee, of course.

How To Serve Cold Brewed Coffee
Cold brewed coffee can be served iced or piping hot, dealer’s choice. You follow the same method for making the coffee either way, and then either serve it over ice or warm it up in the microwave for a hot cup. When warming it for hot coffee, I often add a splash of water to dilute the coffee before warming. But this, again, is a matter of personal taste.
Too strong for your taste? Iced coffee does make a particularly strong cuppa joe! If you’re serving it iced, the ice is meant to melt and dilute the coffee a little. If it’s still a bit too much for you, just dilute your glass with some water or milk to taste.
