What Is The Difference Between Mct Oil And Coconut Oil

4 KETO COFFEE RECIPES | How To Make Bulletproof Coffee & MORE!

MCT oil is often derived from coconut oil, though there are other food-based sources. Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides, but in relatively small amounts.

MCT oil is popular with keto dieters because it is highly concentrated and thought to provide more fat burning and brain boosting properties.2

That translates to increased energy, faster weight loss, and focus!

You can use coconut oil interchangeably for MCT oil in our keto bulletproof coffee recipe. Because MCT oil contains more MCTs , it is usually more expensive.

Coconut oil still provides many of the nutritional benefits of MCT oil, at a lower cost.

Espresso Vs Regular Coffee

Espresso is generally a smaller, more concentrated coffee. When brewed, espresso can develop a creamy foam on top called the crema. Its like having a frothy bulletproof coffee without using cream, butter or MCT oil. Of course, you can still add these items to your morning espresso in order to achieve a creamy, richer espresso.

If you are looking for a coffee that is less acidic than regular coffee, try Golden Ratio. It is so smooth and comes in different flavors. I love to enjoy mine as a bulletproof coffee or just with a splash of cream.

Add a drop or two of vanilla extract or peppermint extract, or a pinch of cinnamon or even some nutmeg to dress it up a bit. My preference is vanilla, but every once in a while I like cinnamon and nutmeg in my coffee.

If you dont have all the ingredients on hand, then you may choose to only go with grass-fed butter and/or coconut oil, for example, with the black coffee. But the combo of all the ingredients raises the health quotient for this coffee.

Pour into your favorite coffee mug.

Sprinkle on a little cinnamon and prepare to enjoy your first keto coffee! If you need a little extra flavor or sweetness, you can add a dash of pure vanilla extract without increasing the carb content of the recipe drastically.

If youre consistently struggling to add extra protein and fat to your daily diet without increasing your carb count, consider adding this keto coffee to your normal rotation of keto recipes.

How To Make Keto Coffee 2 Ways

How to Make Keto Coffee Benefits!

I heard about keto coffee with butter for the first time in a group on Facebook a couple years ago. My first thought was, what a strange concept to combine coffee and butter! It didnt sound appealing, but I was curious enough to try it anyway. I am now so happy I did, but I wasnt in the beginning.

My first attempt at butter coffee with MCT oil was naively stirring it. Needless to say, that was oily and pretty repulsive. In case you didnt know, blending or frothing it is an absolute must! Doing so emulsifies the fats and gets you that creamy, smooth consistency with a frothy top. Mmm, just like a low carb latte!

So, there are two ways to do this:

  • Use a blender. This is the best way to get the bulletproof coffee super frothy! However, the downside is the cleanup you have to wash a whole blender just to make a cup of coffee. And, if you work in an office, this isnt a very practical option.
  • Use a milk frother. These are perfect for making keto coffee on the go! A milk frother is small, compact, much quieter than a blender, and easier to clean. However, the downside is you dont get quite as much foam as you do from the blender.
  • You can use either method frother or blender. So, what is the better way? You can decide between those two options, because they both work great!

Whatever you do, dont simply stir your bulletproof coffee, because the result will not be the same. This is how you want it to look:

    What Goes Into Keto Coffee

When you have your morning cup of coffee, and arent a huge fan of black coffee, you usually add milk, cream and/or sugar. None of those work for keto.

Sugar is nothing more than soluble carbohydrates, and is strictly forbidden on a ketogenic diet. Milk is carb-heavy, as are most commercially-sold coffee creamers, so theyre not options.

Cream is fine for those on keto, as long as its heavy cream and used in moderation because of its calories. However, its not the ideal keto additive alone, because cream still contains carbs and they can add up quickly if youre not careful. Dairy-free milks like coconut milk and almond milk are acceptable, but wont contribute as much fat as you get in keto coffee.

That brings us to the oil, butter and ghee we mentioned at the start of this section. Any of those will soften the bitterness of regular coffee, just as milk, cream and sugar would. But they superpower a dieters fat consumption at the same time.

Not just any oil will do. Keto coffee is made with something called MCT oil, which stands for medium-chain triglycerides. Without diving too deep into the science, the structure of MCT oils allows them to be absorbed without going through the digestive process, making them an immediate energy source. Additionally, MCT oil can be converted into ketones in the liver.

So we have black coffee, ghee, grass-fed butter and MCT coconut oil. Lets make some keto coffee.

Is Plain Cream In Coffee Keto Friendly

Yes, you can also just use cream in your coffee. You have 2 options:

    • Heavy cream This is the more purist option. Each tablespoon has 0.4 grams carbs. Its perfect in coffee!
    • Half and half Half and half is technically half heavy cream and half whole milk. Even though whole milk is not keto friendly, and for that reason, half and half didnt make it onto the keto food list, half and half on keto can be okay in your coffee in moderation. It also happens to be lighter in calories than heavy cream. It has 0.7g net carbs per tablespoon.

    Mocha Keto Butter Coffee

Making keto coffee is easy and consists of three easy steps:

    • Brew
    • Boost
    • Blend

BREW 6-8 ounces of coffee your favorite way. I have a French press pot and a Keurig coffee machine, but trendy pour-over coffee makers and drip machines work equally well.

BOOST your coffee by adding equal amounts of grass-fed butter and MCT oil . Start with 1 teaspoon each and work your way up to 1 tablespoon. I find that adding the fats to my mug before pouring in the hot liquid helps them melt better. Dont want to fool with butter and oil? Try adding heavy cream and exogenous ketones to your coffee for instant energy and focus. My favorite flavor is chocolate raspberry.

BLEND. Blending the fats into the coffee with an electric milk frother emulsifies the fat into the liquid. This produces a cup of coffee with nice body very similar in taste and texture to a latte complete with foam. Its utterly delicious.

Since fat slows down your digestion, adding fat to your coffee creates a feeling of fullness and keeps your blood sugar level steady for longer.

It means that the benefits of adding fat or butter in coffee are great for anyone, not only people on a keto diet.

However, keep in mind that bulletproof coffees are high in saturated fat, and not suitable for people with cholesterol or some other health issues.

Also, if your body is not fat-adapted, meaning it is not used to using ketones as a source of energy, it wont have the weight-loss benefits it brings to someone following a keto diet.

Black Coffee And Keto: A Perfect Match

Keto Iced Coffee! Low Carb Iced Vanilla Latte Coffee Idea ...

Youre probably familiar with the basics of a keto eating plan. You have to give up most of the traditionally American diet staples: fast food, packaged and frozen food, cereal, bread, pasta and sugar.

What do they all have in common? They all contain lots of carbohydrates, and carbs can easily sabotage a keto diet. The reason is a bit complicated, but once you understand the basic science behind the ketogenic diet, it all makes perfect sense.

    • The body needs energy to function, of course. In normal circumstances, its generated when the carbohydrates in our diet are burned. The body turns the carbs into glucose , which is the fuel that powers the body and brain.
    • The keto diet, however, drastically reduces the amount of carbs you eat every day. A normal adult consumes between 225 and 325 grams of carbohydrates daily on a strict keto diet, though, youre limited to 20-25 per day.
    • That seemingly-ridiculous restriction has an important purpose. When the body doesnt get enough carbs to make glucose, it switches to whats known as a metabolic state of ketosis. In ketosis, the liver produces molecules called ketones which can be used as fuel in place of glucose.
    • Heres the last part of the puzzle: the body burns stored body fat in order to produce ketones. And fat-burning, as you undoubtedly know, is an important factor in effective weight loss.

Coffee with milk and sugar, though? A single cup can contribute 10 grams of carbs, or half of an entire days allowance.
