Today we’ll focus on the physical and chemical processes that make up coffee brewing, starting with one of the most simple methods: pourover.
Pourover coffee starts with ground coffee, a filter, and a filter holder, often called a ‘pourover dripper.’ At the most basic level, pourover brewing involves pouring water over and through the grounds to extract the coffee flavors into your cup or serving vessel. Grown in Central America, Guatemalan coffee is complex while still being balanced in flavor and medium in roast.
Water The Secret Ingredient
Naturally you want this ingredient to be of the highest quality as well so always use bottled or filtered water. The chlorine and other chemicals in regular tap water can produce unwanted notes in your coffee. And because the minerals in high-quality water are necessary for the best home brew coffee using distilled or softened water is not recommended and could also damage your coffee maker.

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee In A French Press
If using a French press, once your coffee is done, gently press the mesh down on the grounds to filter them out. Pour the coffee into a jar or bottle for holding. French press cold brew makes less mess, so if you plan to brew cold regularly, it’s worth investing in the coffee maker.
With other kinds of containers, put a filter or cheesecloth in a sieve on the mouth of another container. Gradually pour coffee through the filter.
Or, before you brew, use a rubber band to bundle grounds in a coffee filter or a piece of cheesecloth. Put in the packets and cover the container with plastic wrap. Just pitch the packets when you’re done.
If You Use A Keurig Or Another Capsule Brewer You Dont Have Any Control
Speaking of convenience, Keurigs were pretty much universally panned by our experts, though not for all the reasons you might think. How And When You Grind Matters
Grind your coffee immediately before brewing for maximum flavor.
Experts say coffee begins to lose its flavor within 30 minutes of being ground. This being the case, it’s best to grind on the spot, just before brewing a pot.
Grind size and consistency matter quite a bit, as well. Grind too coarse and you will have a weak pot of coffee. Grind too fine and you will over-extract the coffee and it will taste bitter. Most drip coffee makers call for a medium to medium-fine grind.
Unless you want to spend upward of $100 on a quality automatic burr grinder, a manual hand mill is the most affordable way to achieve a nice, consistent grind, though they do require a small amount of manual labor.
Blade grinders also work, but will produce inconsistent particle size, which can lead to over-extraction.

How Should You Store Cold Brew
You can store your cold brew concentrate refrigerated for up to 10 days. Please keep it in an airtight pitcher, a large Mason jar, or can even use a large water bottle glass.
If you are adding water to your cold brew concentrate to dilute it, that will reduce its shelf-life. You want to consume this within two days from the moment you make it.;
Finally, while you can prepare cold brew at room temperature, you do need to make sure to store it airtight in your refrigerator.
