What Pods Should I Use

Nespresso VertuoPlus How To – First use or long period of non-use

Nespresso makes its own brand of aluminum pods meant to be used with their machines, available directly through their website or through several major department stores and retailers. The range of coffees spans single-origin to flavored blends, with seasonal and special edition releases throughout the year. There are two types of pods:

  • The Original capsules are compatible with the Le Cube, Citiz, Essenza, Pixie, Lattissima, Maestria, and Creatista machines.
  • The Vertuo capsules are compatible only with the Nespresso Vertuo line.

Burke says that there are also several other alternatives that make Nespresso Original-compatible pods, as well as reusable versions that can be refilled at home, like Seal Pods. Note that Keurig K-Cups, Vittoria Espressotoria, K-Fee, and soft pods will not work in a Nespresso machine.

Why The Nespresso Vertuoplus Is My Favorite Coffee Maker

I like my coffee every which way, usually black and otherwise fitting my setting and mood. That is: Hot when its cold, cold when its hot, simple during work and maybe indulgent when I have time to appreciate it. To that end, I grabbed Nespressos VertuoPlus late in 2019, trialing a pick up at Macys Im not likely to repeat online shopping is quite fine .

And its become one of my favorite coffee makers, more than a year in, both for its consistent simplicity and potential complexity: Your coffee is entirely in your hands and wont require too much work if you dont want it to. If youre a coffee freak , you probably want to grind, measure and perfectly soak your coffee with each brew for the optimal cup. Good on you. If youre like me and want good, strong coffee that might not be peak but is certainly and unmistakably coffee-y, I recommend heading the way of a single-serve coffee maker like the Nespresso VertuoPlus .

Even when Im in the mood for something more complex and put together, I can accomplish some semblance of it at home with the VertuoPlus the frother-inclusive edition helps in this department, as do Nespresso’s fancier flavors or call it a day and head to a coffee shop where a trained brewer can handle the logistics.

How To Set Up The Nespresso Citiz Coffee Machine/ How Do You Use Nespresso Citiz Machine First

When you unbox your Nespresso Citiz, cleaning the machine inside and out is mandatory before setting it up or brewing a capsule with it. Here are a few tips to be aware of when you start. Doing so is as simple as brewing a few batches of hot water in the machine, such as

  • Wash its water reservoir with tap water.
  • Fill the reservoir with fresh water and fix it in its desired place.
  • Also, wash the removable/adjustable drip trays and coffee capsules compartment with tap water.
  • Wash the coffee spout and the machines exterior with a damp cloth.
  • After the device is set up, press any brew buttons to turn on the unit.
  • Place the container under the coffee outlet to catch the dispensed hot water.
  • Press one of the brew buttons to start the rinse cycle.
  • Run three rinse cycles and discard the hot water. The rinsing process will take 5 minutes.
  • Now your machine is ready to brew.

The CitiZ machine has only two buttons. One makes espresso or a single shot, while the other makes a double shot or lungo. There is no independent power button press one of the two coffee buttons to start, which will flash for about 25 seconds when the machine is ready to use. When the button lights up as a steady green, it indicates that CitiZ is prepared for action. Make sure the pod is inserted into the machine, then press the appropriate button. After about twenty seconds, your desired morning cup of coffee will be ready to enjoy.

Upgrade Pick: Nespresso Essenza Plus

*At the time of publishing, the price was $210.

If you want a Nespresso machine that can make a wider variety of espresso drinks, we recommend the Nespresso Essenza Plus. This slightly larger machine can brew espressos, lungos, and ristrettoseverything the Essenza Mini canbut it can also brew two sizes of Americano by adding hot water to your espresso, so its an excellent option for households that enjoy different coffee drinks or for people who may want something more similar to regular coffee. The Essenza Plus also boasts a larger water tank and used-capsule tray than our top pick offers, and thanks to its few extra inches of height, it can accommodate taller cups than the Essenza Mini can.

To brew an Americano with the Essenza Plus, you simultaneously press the hot water button and either the espresso or lungo button, depending on the size of Americano you want. The hot water button also works on its own, as the water comes out of a separate spigot. Though this hot water feature initially struck us as an exciting option to brew tea, we found that the Essenza Pluss hot water comes out, at its hottest, at around 160 °Fnot hot enough for most teas. And if youve just brewed coffee, in order to avoid a muddied cup of water you have to wait several minutes for the spigot to stop dripping its final brown droplets before you can brew the hot water.

Setting The Cup Size For Lattissima Touch

On a Lattissima Touch ®, there are 6 different buttons that can be used to brew coffee – The three buttons on the left make Lungo, Espresso and Ristretto, and the 3 buttons on the right make Latte macchiato, cappuccino and hot milk. We recommend a cup size of 100 ml for a Lungo, 40 ml for an Espresso and 25 ml for a Ristretto. You can use the instructions below to set the desired cup size:

  • Make sure the machine is turned on and the water container is full.
  • A button will flash for 25 seconds until the water is hot. When the light stops flashing, the machine is ready.
  • Now open the handle completely and load a coffee capsule
  • Press and hod the button / function you wish to program.
  • Release the button when you have reached the desired amount of water
  • You can use the instructions below to set the cup size for your latte macchiato and cappuccino. When setting these, be sure to define the amount of both milk and coffee:

  • Make sure the machine is turned on and the water tank and the milk container is full.
  • A button will flash for 25 seconds until the water is hot. When the light stops flashing, the machine is ready.
  • Now open the handle completely and load a coffee capsule.
  • Press and hold the button / function you wish to program.

    Nespresso Vertuo Plus Review: Features

There are plenty of features that separate the Nespresso Vertuo Plus from its competition, but one of the biggest has to be the centrifusion brewing. At the start of the brewing process, the machine punctures a series of holes around the edge of the circular pod, before rapidly spinning it. In doing this, the Vertuo Plus not only achieves balance in its water dispersal, but also produces a rich crema that adds to the smoothness of the texture.

Beyond its brewing technique, the Vertuo Plus is also putting its smarts to making sure the temperature and speed are just right for your specific drink of choice as well. Each Vertuo pod has its own barcode, read by the machine at the start of brewing. While that does mean you can only use Nespresso’s own capsules, you can also guarantee that the best machine settings will also be applied.

There’s no built-in milk frother here, which may be a little disappointing considering the higher up front price tag. It’s worth mentioning the Vertuo Plus does feel a little restrictive in this regard.

Nespresso Vertuo Plus Review: Ease Of Use

The slick design of the Nespresso Vertuo Plus is also mirrored in its everyday functioning. Put simply, I found the Vertuo Plus a joy to use, with smooth running across weeks of testing and very little setup to begin with.

With an incredibly simple one-button setup, you could operate this machine in a dark kitchen at 4am while running on very little sleep a fun experience I had the chance to test out last month. Simply add the pod, close the lid, add your cup, and push the button the machine takes care of the temperature and brewing settings for you, which not only means easy operation, but consistency between brews as well.

Initial setup simply requires cleaning through the system and takes around 15 minutes to complete.

It’s worth noting that you’ll need to take a little care not to allow anything to interfere with the lid closing. On test, a pesky plant placed nearby cost us some pods when the leaves caught under the lid. The machine still punctured the capsule, but couldn’t brew and when the lid was opened again, the automatic disposal system kicked it back into the used pod container.

    The Environmental Case Against Nespresso

Nespresso Vertuo Next – First use and pairing

We found minimal research on how the carbon footprint of a Nespresso capsule compared with that of, say, filtered coffee. Nestlé, which owns Nespresso, hired a consulting firm to analyze the lifecycle of a capsule the resulting 2009 report found that drip filter coffee, per cup, resulted in a greater excess of boiled water and wasted coffee than both capsule and instant coffee. But we dont necessarily trust that study. An independent report in 2011 determined that the two most eco-friendly coffee brewing systems were filter coffee, if you drink the whole pot, and instant coffee, if you boil only the necessary amount of water. The researchers found that capsule coffee and the materials and processes required to make and dispose of its packaging caused more environmental damage, and they noted that the kind of coffee involved was the most important factor. The study also determined that aluminum capsules had a smaller footprint than plastic ones but only if recycled.

If youre really worried about the environmental impact, dont buy a Nespresso so you avoid creating the waste in the first place.

Outside of the Nespresso program, theres no guarantee you can recycle capsules on your own. Even if you manage to separate the lid and scrub out all the grounds, your local recycling center probably isnt equipped to process anything that small. So if you try to recycle a capsule on your own, it may slip through the filtering screen or jam the processing machines.

Should I Clean My Nespresso Machine

You should clean your Nespresso machine after each use. This cleaning will include emptying the drip tray and cleaning the water container. Also, you can remove the used pod from the machine if there is one.

However, every couple of months, you will need to do a thorough cleanup and descaling. Then, you will need to get the special descaling solution and run the descaling solution. After doing that, you will have a squeaky clean Nespresso machine!

    Nespresso Vertuo Plus Review: Verdict

The Nespresso Vertuo Plus is the brand’s best machine to date, and even though there are concerns around being locked into the brand’s expensive pods, that’s the price you pay for a convenient brewing system packed with luxurious features. If you want the ease of a pod machine, but don’t want to sacrifice the quality of your coffee, there aren’t really any options outside of Nespresso’s lineup.

The only thing holding the Nespresso Vertuo Plus back is its pods. While the machine often comes with a starter pack to get you up and running, those premium capsules will start to add up. Not only does the Vertuo Plus have a higher MSRP than Keurig competitors, but the coffee itself is more expensive, which becomes even more frustrating considering you’re fully locked into the brand’s own pods. Keurig’s K-Cup brand is open to more coffee roasters, which means you’re getting far more variety and, crucially, a wider price range here.

As mentioned above, we did also lose a few of those precious capsules to the automatic lid system, where anything getting in the way leads it to refuse to brew.

While Nespresso pods are recyclable, they can’t be recycled from home. You’ll need to take your pods to a Nespresso boutique or select retail locations, which can undercut some of the brand’s focus on convenience.

Alternative: Comparing Nespresso Vertuo And Evoluo

    Nespresso

Nespresso Vertuo is the basic Vertuo Line machine. Its also the fastest Nespresso Vertuo machine, as it heats up in just 15 seconds. It comes with a 40 oz water tank, but it doesnt swivel like the Vertuo Plus. Finally, the lid on the Vertuo is more difficult to open and close, as it has a lock that needs to be turned, like Nespresso Vertuo Next.

Nespresso Evoluo is bulkier compared to other Nespresso Vertuo models, but it houses a 54 oz water tank. It also has the largest container for used pods it fits 17 used Nespresso capsules. This is the best choice if you brew several drinks a day and want to spend little time cleaning and refilling the machine.

    Nespresso Evoluo highlights:

    Programming An Essenza Mini

Step 1:In order to program the cup size of the Essenza Mini machine, users will need to first reach down to the side of the machine and turn it on by flipping the power switch.

Step 2:Once the espresso and lungo buttons have finished flashing, the user can go ahead and put a capsule that is compatible with Nespresso with Nespresso machines into the top capsule area and put a cup underneath of the valve.

Step 3:They then either press the espresso button or the lungo button, depending on which one they want to program. Whichever one they choose, they need to hold down the button and maintain pressure on it even after the coffee starts flowing.

Step 4:Once the coffee has reached the level within the cup that they desire, they can let go of the button and the flowing will stop. Whatever amount of coffee it has distributed out of the machine will now be remembered for the next time. So, instead of having to hold down the button every single time, the user will just need to press it once and the machine will automatically distribute the exact same amount every time that specific button is pressed.

    Nespresso Vertuo Plus Review: Performance

I have always held a distrust of pod coffee makers, having only really interacted with cheaper models. The Nespresso Vertuo Plus changed all that, with an undeniably tasty cup brewed with elegance time after time. This is some of the smoothest coffee I’ve been able to produce in my own kitchen, with a rich flavor and silky texture that I haven’t come across in an at-home brewer before.

That smoothness stems from the unique centrifusion brewing technique employed here. While it does take a little longer than standard pump machines, it’s spending that time producing a far better cup of coffee. Plus, the whole process still only takes around two minutes from start to finish.

This machine does favor those who prefer black coffee, as larger Alto sizes certainly don’t leave too much room for milk and the aforementioned lack of a built-in steamer means you’ll be relying on separate purchases for specialty drinks. However, if you do prefer your coffee pure, the Vertuo Plus does a good job of maintaining individual flavor notes, even if they’re not quite as pronounced as a more premium espresso machine.
