Starbucks Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso Recipe | Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Espresso

This drink is not for the caffeine faint of heart. A grande packs a punch of 255 milligrams, and let me tell you, I felt it the entire day . If thats too much for you, Id advise lowering the total number of espresso shots, or simply sizing down. A tall has two shots, a grande has three, and a venti has four.

I also thought the price was a little steep for this drink one my usuals at Starbucks is a venti iced latte with various syrups, and it costs roughly the same even though its one size up. The new oatmilk is likely driving the price up on this one.

Why This Recipe Works

  • It’s just like Starbucks! – The recipe calls for the same amounts of everything so it’s super similar to what the brown sugar shaken espresso tastes like.
  • You can use the same coffee – The flavor of the final drink will greately depend on what coffee beans you use. If you want it to be the exact same, get blonde espresso roast beans directly from Starbucks. I use their capsules in my Nespresso machine for this drink!
  • It’s fun to make! – Making a shaken espresso is like making a cocktail but instead of alcohol, you get a nice caffeine kick to wake you up in the morning.
  • It’s healthier – The recipe still uses brown sugar but when you make it at home, you know exactly how much sugar goes in!
  • Cheaper than Starbucks – This probably comes as no surprise but making your morning lattes at home is much cheaper than buying them at a coffee shop! Your favorite coffee shop also probably always uses the same beans but at home, you can buy different kinds and change it up every day!

I Tried Starbucks’s New Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso And It’s Worth The Hype

Starbucks released its newest cold coffee beverage, the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, earlier this month, which immediately had coffee-lovers talking. The general consensus? It’s the best thing the chain has released since the Salted Caramel Cream Cold Brew. I mean, I’m not really surprised, are you? Starbucks is known for constantly reinventing the wheel of caffeinated iced drinks, and even when I placed my order, the barista said, “Good choice but fair warning, this drink is very easy to get addicted to.” Now consider this my warning to you.

The drink is a new addition to Starbuck’s permanent nationwide menu and features Oatly’s plant-based oat milk, a nondairy milk alternative. I paid a visit to my local Starbucks to see what all the fuss is about and whether it’s worth the almost six bucks.

Theres a total of 143 calories in this coffee drink. The number of calories is mostly made up of brown sugar syrup, but lets be honest, this is one of the key features of this coffee that makes it so delicious.

A Starbucks tall has 2 shots of espresso, and grande has 3 shots, and venti has 4 shots.

My homemade Starbucks copycat version is made with 1 shot of espresso. But if you want a larger drink with more espresso shots, just double or triple the ingredients!

Also, a Starbucks tall has 3 pumps of brown sugar syrup, a grande has 4 pumps, and a venti has 6 pumps.

How To Make Starbucks Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso With Oat Milk

  • Add the espresso , cinnamon, brown sugar simple syrup, and cinnamon into a mason jar or shaker filled with ice.
  • Shake the drink until it is cold, frothy, and well mixed, about 30 seconds.
  • Pour over the shaken espresso over ice and top with oat milk. Stir to combine and Enjoy!
  • I like to make the brown sugar simple syrup in large batches and keep it in the fridge so its handy. It saves me a ton of time and all I need to do is grab a glass, my espresso and oat milk, and quickly prepare my brown sugar espresso drink! It saves me quite a bit of money AND it tastes just as good as ordering this Starbucks drink from a barista!

The brown simple syrup takes less than 5 minutes to prepare and is made with 3 simple ingredients: Brown Sugar, Water, and Vanilla Extract. You simply add the ingredients to a small saucepan, stir, bring it to a simmer, then remove it from the heat and let it cool before using.

How To Make Brown Sugar Syrup

Starbucks uses pre-made brown sugar syrup. But did you know that you can easily make some brown sugar syrup at home? It only contains two ingredients and will taste amazing. To make the brown sugar syrup collect the following items:

    • Brown sugar 1/2 cup
    • Small saucepan with a handle

Ill be showing you how to make a syrup out of only two items. This coffee syrup will give you the best flavoring possible. The syrup will eventually look like this:

Adding raw sugar to iced coffee will not dissolve and will leave you with a weird-tasting, grainy coffee that isnt great. Follow the steps Ive listed below.

Youre basically making simple syrup, but with brown sugar instead of white granulated sugar:

  • Add the brown sugar and water to a small saucepan, preferably with a handle.
  • Place on medium heat until the sugar has fully dissolved.
  • Slowly stir through the sugary water to prevent burning.
  • Once the sugar has fully dissolved, remove it from heat and leave to cool down completely.
  • When the brown sugar syrup has fully cooled down, transfer to a container to store or place in a glass with a pouring spout to make it easy to pour into your coffee.
  • You can make more or less brown sugar syrup, depending on the number of coffees youll be making. The above-listed brown sugar syrup recipe will be enough for 6 to 8 coffees .

Regular Milk Instead Of Oat Milk

Go ahead and use dairy milk instead of oat milk. Not everyone is into non-dairy milk, and that is totally fine. Use any kind of milk you want.

However, if you opt for oat milk, choose a brand that doesnt have any extra flavoring or additional sweeteners. A very popular oat milk is the Barista Blend from Califia Farms.

Switch Out The Espresso For Cold Brew Coffee

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso Dupe Skinny Mixes

If you want to go all out and get the most caffeine and flavor into your coffee, you can also switch out the espresso for cold brew coffee or cold brew espresso.

Although it technically isnt a shaken espresso recipe anymore, it will taste amazing.

Just follow the same steps of this recipe but switch the espresso for cold brew coffee. Dont forget to shake the cold brew coffee, just as you would with an espresso.

This will ensure the coffee gets nice and fluffy and give this unique twist to your coffee drink.

If you have an espresso machine at home, you can pull two shots of espresso from there. This will create the best possible coffee.

However, suppose you dont have an espresso machine at home, and you want to use a great-tasting espresso as the basis for this coffee recipe. In that case, I highly recommend brewing coffee using an AeroPress or Moka pot instead.

These coffee brewers make a robust espresso that complements the recipe almost as great as the bigger and more expensive espresso machines.

Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

This second drink wasn’t quite as good as I remembered. I couldn’t taste any cinnamon, and the brown sugar syrup had less flavor than my first one potentially because it had fewer pumps, or perhaps because it had been shaken a different way.

Overall, it was still tasty, but not in a “change my Starbucks order forever” way.

Dont hate us Starbucks, but $6 plus for an espresso drink should be a crime! Weve always had an issue with Starbucks pricing, but truth be told, its not just Starbucks, a lot of coffee shops are expensive nowadays. I spent $8 on a cold brew and almost had a heart attack lol. Anyways here is the ordering hack that works for us, depending on who your barista is they may or may not give you pushback for being a cheap ***.

The recipe here is the copycat method recommended on the Starbucks website. However, Ive also made this with Brown Sugar Syrup and its delicious that way too.

You can use light or dark brown sugar in this recipe. Dark brown sugar will provide a richer caramel flavor compared to light brown.

When first trying this drink, I found it easiest to adjust the level of sweetness when using the syrup. The amount below is perfect for me though and its the simpler recipe I chose to use for everyday iced coffees.

How to Make Brown Sugar Syrup

To make Brown Sugar Syrup, youll simply combine equal parts brown sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and simmer until the sugar has dissolved and the syrup thickens slightly.

This should only take a few minutes. Allow the syrup to cool and pour the syrup into an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.
