What Is An Iced Dirty Chai From Starbucks

How To Make A Starbucks Chai Tea Latte At Home // by a barista

The Starbucks Iced Dirty Chai Latte Recipe is made with a chai concentrate, milk, and espresso. This is then sweetened and served over ice. It is easy to recreate this popular Starbucks order at home with a few simple ingredients.

Chai is a spiced tea, typically served in India. It is a mixture of black tea leaves that are combined with varying amounts of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, star anise, and sometimes fennel, nutmeg, pepper and coriander.

Make Your Own Concentrate

In most instances, the best option is to whip up some homemade chai concentrate. The main benefit is that you can make as strong as you want, ensuring that the flavor of the ingredients really shine through. Furthermore, you have greater control over what spices are used in the concentrate.

You can choose to remove ingredients that are traditionally used or add ones that you dont usually find. It is also possible for you to determine which flavors have the greatest impact or if they will all blend together.

A lot of chai concentrates can also be very high in sugar. If you are trying to cut back on sugar or have certain medical conditions, then making your own version will allow you to be healthier.

Homemade chai concentrate is often a lot cheaper to make as well. This allows you to make it in larger batches and enjoy this drink on a more regular basis.

Is Chai Latte Healthy

I bet you have already heard that some spices are associated with health benefits.

Black tea can also be very good for you. The tea is rich in antioxidants and some studies say it can even lower blood pressure.

However, there are other ingredients that might not be as healthy.

Chai concentrates can be packed with sugar, and thats one of the reasons I like to make it homemade. I can sweeten my homemade version with honey, maple syrup, or a sweetener for cane sugar-free options.

This Starbucks iced chai tea latte copycat recipe is the perfect two-ingredient drink to combat the summer heat. Inspired by the iconic Starbucks chai iced drink this recipe used one of my favorite store-bought chai tea concentrate to bring you those delicious flavors right at home.

Believe it or not, the first time I tried chai latte was not at Starbucks but at the Bouchon Bakery where I worked for a while. A coworker, now friend made it for me to try and right away fell in love with it!

Since I was still in college then, I started grabbing one of my favorite drinks from Starbucks because it was easily accessible right on campus.

Thinking about the amount of money I spent there during that period makes me nauseous though!! I was already a broke college student and my Chai tea latte Starbucks addiction didnt help.

Heat 2 cups of water and the spices in a small saucepan over medium heat on the stove top. Let the ingredients simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and add 2 tea bags and maple syrup .

After another 5 minutes, pour the concentrate through a fine mesh strainer and into a heat-safe jar. Allow the concentrate to cool at room temperature , then place in the fridge.

Time-Saving Tip: Short on time? Buy a chai concentrate or chai tea bags from the store. Store-bought concentrates and pre-mixed tea bags lack the strong flavor profile that youll get from this homemade concentrate, but they will give you the chai experience if youre short on time.

Use this same concentrate to make a hot latte, if desired, just warm the concentrate and follow this hot tea recipe.

Is Caffeine From Chai Latte Keeping You Up

Most of us know that consuming food or drink that contains caffeine will keep you awake. Thats why we reach for it when we feel our eyelids drooping. But, what might not be obvious is how long it takes to metabolize one serving of chai latte.

Caffeine has a half-life of three to five hours. In other words, thats how long it takes your body to eliminate half a dose of the stimulant. For this reason, its best to avoid caffeine at least six hours before bedtime. Ten if you want it completely out of your system.

Thats why people tend to switch to as they grow in age and wisdom.

But caffeine isnt the only thing that can interfere with you getting quality shut-eye. If youre still struggling after putting a reasonable amount of time between your last cup of chai latte and bed, it might be time to look for other culprits.

    • Chai tea bags. There’s a few different brands of chai tea, and you can find it at pretty much all grocery stores and Target.
    • Ground cinnamon + ground nutmeg. I like to add a little extra cinnamon and nutmeg to my chai tea lattes.
    • Maple syrup or honey. I like to make lattes with natural sweeteners, such as maple syrup or honey, but you can also use granulated sugar. Just make sure whatever sweetener you use, you mix it in while the chai tea concentrate is hot so that the sweetener dissolves.
    • Milk. I like to use whole or 2% milk for a creamier latte that resembles a latte you would get a Starbucks, but feel free to use milk alternatives, if desired.

How To Make The Best Iced Chai Latte

I like to cold-steep my tea for at least a few hours, though sometimes I leave it all day. The beauty of cold-steeping is that the tea stays mellow and smooth even if you forget about it for a while.

I think four bags of tea per quart of water makes a nice spicy cup of iced chai. I recommend starting there, but if you think you’d like your chai lighter or stronger, just adjust the number of tea bags as needed.

I sweeten my chai lattes with a quick honey syrup made of equal parts honey and water. A syrup like this mixes more easily into the tea than straight honey.

    Emma Christensen

You could mix the syrup with the full batch of chai once it’s finished steeping, but I prefer to mix them in the glass. That way I can adjust the sweetness to my taste, or to the taste of any guests who happen to wander by in need of a cool, refreshing beverage.

Top off your glass of iced chai with as much or as little milk as you like. Creaminess is a highly personal decision. I like to use whole milk, but 2% milk, almond milk, or coconut milk are all lovely.

One final thought: If you like to sip your iced tea slowly and don’t want it to get watered down with ice cubes, make an extra batch of chai and freeze it into ice cubes!
