How To Make This Recipe

Making Starbucks’ Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso at Home
  • The sweetener used for this drink is brown sugar syrup. The first step is to make the homemade syrup. This is what makes the drink tastes like the Starbucks version. It only takes five minutes to make the syrup, so don’t skip this step.
  • Next, brew the espresso, then add the brown sugar syrup, espresso, cinnamon, and some ice to a cocktail shaker. Shake for 10 seconds until the coffee is cooled and foamy.
  • Once chilled, pour the drink into a 12 ounce glass filled with ice.
  • Top with about ½ inch of oatmilk.
  • How To Make An Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso Latte

Making a Brown Sugar Latte at home is quite easy! You need about 5 minutes, a handful of ingredients, and you’re good to go. Double or triple the brown sugar syrup, and store in the fridge to get you through the week.

Let’s talk about how to make the latte.

  • Make the Brown Sugar Syrup. To a small bowl or cup, pour in boiling hot water then add the brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix until dissolved.
  • Brew the espresso. If using Instant Espresso Powder, make 1-2 shots according to the package directions. My jar says 1 tablespoon of instant espresso powder + 4 tablespoons of hot water.
  • Shake. Add the brown sugar syrup and the espresso to a small jar with ice – shake until chilled and frothy.
  • Froth the milk . If desired, use a milk frother to froth the milk.
  • Strain over ice. Strain the brown sugar syrup and espresso into a glass filled with fresh ice. Pour the milk over the top. Garnish with a sprinkle of brown sugar. Cheers!
  • Switch Out The Espresso For Cold Brew Coffee

If you want to go all out and get the most caffeine and flavor into your coffee, you can also switch out the espresso for cold brew coffee or cold brew espresso.

Although it technically isnt a shaken espresso recipe anymore, it will taste amazing.

Just follow the same steps of this recipe but switch the espresso for cold brew coffee. Dont forget to shake the cold brew coffee, just as you would with an espresso.

This will ensure the coffee gets nice and fluffy and give this unique twist to your coffee drink.

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso Nutrition Facts

Now, before I even began recipe testing, I went out and ordered the real deal version of this espresso drink at my local Starbucks. I wanted to make sure I got the flavor profile correct.

The verdict: I liked it! The subtlety of the flavors surprised me. There were no chemically after flavors.

I got to recipe testing and, not to flex, but it tasted like the real thing on my first try.

Of course! To switch things up or if you simply aren’t able to do the traditional “shake” because you’re running late, etc. you can surely enjoy this drink without the “shake”.

After making the brown sugar syrup and letting it cool, simply add the ingredients together in a glass, do a quick stir, and wallah! The only difference is that you won’t have a ‘foam’ at the top of your drink.

Regular Milk Instead Of Oat Milk

Go ahead and use dairy milk instead of oat milk. Not everyone is into non-dairy milk, and that is totally fine. Use any kind of milk you want.

However, if you opt for oat milk, choose a brand that doesnt have any extra flavoring or additional sweeteners. A very popular oat milk is the Barista Blend from Califia Farms.

    What Is Shaken Espresso

Think of it as a coffee drink prepared like a cocktail .

For this recipe the homemade brown sugar simple syrup and prepared espresso are shaken with ice in a cocktail shaker or jar and poured over fresh ice in a glass.

Why do this? It blends the ingredients better versus stirring them and gives great flavor.

This technique is how many cocktails recipes are made.

I Tried Starbucks’s New Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso And It’s Worth The Hype

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oat Shaken Espresso Review

Starbucks released its newest cold coffee beverage, the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, earlier this month, which immediately had coffee-lovers talking. The general consensus? It’s the best thing the chain has released since the Salted Caramel Cream Cold Brew. I mean, I’m not really surprised, are you? Starbucks is known for constantly reinventing the wheel of caffeinated iced drinks, and even when I placed my order, the barista said, “Good choice but fair warning, this drink is very easy to get addicted to.” Now consider this my warning to you.

The drink is a new addition to Starbuck’s permanent nationwide menu and features Oatly’s plant-based oat milk, a nondairy milk alternative. I paid a visit to my local Starbucks to see what all the fuss is about and whether it’s worth the almost six bucks.

    The Double Cinnamon Quandary

Yep, this recipe calls for two types of cinnamon: cassia and Saigon. Believe it or not, there are a few pretty big differences between the two spices.

First off, cassia is not authentic cinnamon. Yes, the most popular cinnamon in the US is imposter, but it tastes pretty much like the real thing, and many cooks actually prefer it to the real deal when cooking savory dishes.

Saigon cinnamon, on the other hand, is true cinnamon. It has a strong flavor and a bit of heat and is also much more expensive than cassia.

If you dont want to run to the store just to make this drink, use whichever cinnamon you have on hand, but you may need to play with the amounts a little.

    Which Milk To Use

All the articles I read online highly recommended to get the drink with Oatly – a popular oat milk brand. That’s exactly what I did when I went to Starbucks – convenient since I’m lactose intolerant – and it just tasted like regular ol’ burnt espresso to me.

I do agree with using oat milk for this particular drink. At home I tried it with my lactose free milk, as well as oat milk and almond milk. Overall, I preferred oat milk and I’m not usually the biggest fan of oat milk.

Like a cocktail – you’ll shake the espresso vigorously with ice, then layer it over more ice with a flavored syrup , and top with full fat oat milk.

The “full fat” part of the “full fat oatmilk” is important! It’s what gives the Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso from Starbucks that fantastic Iced Oatmeal Cookie latte flavor. If you can’t find full fat, you can go with the Regular oatmilk, but I do not recommend the light/low fat.

The main component in this simple homemade Iced Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso recipe is the sweet brown sugar flavor and the coffee. To make your drink, youll use:

    • Espresso. You can also use chilled espresso coffee or actual freshly brewed shots.
    • Almond milk. Make your own! Or use store-bought Almond milk. You can also use other plant-based milk options.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • It’s just like Starbucks! – The recipe calls for the same amounts of everything so it’s super similar to what the brown sugar shaken espresso tastes like.
    • You can use the same coffee – The flavor of the final drink will greately depend on what coffee beans you use. If you want it to be the exact same, get blonde espresso roast beans directly from Starbucks. I use their capsules in my Nespresso machine for this drink!
    • It’s fun to make! – Making a shaken espresso is like making a cocktail but instead of alcohol, you get a nice caffeine kick to wake you up in the morning.
    • It’s healthier – The recipe still uses brown sugar but when you make it at home, you know exactly how much sugar goes in!
    • Cheaper than Starbucks – This probably comes as no surprise but making your morning lattes at home is much cheaper than buying them at a coffee shop! Your favorite coffee shop also probably always uses the same beans but at home, you can buy different kinds and change it up every day!

    What Is Iced Shaken Espresso

Think of iced shaken espresso like shaking a cocktail, but with no alcohol.

In this case, the homemade brown sugar simple syrup is shaken with the shots of freshly brewed espresso first to allow the brown sugar to blend in properly as opposed to stirring it. It’s then shaken with ice to cool the coffee. As a bonus, it gets a little frothy at the top!

Starbucks says the benefit to shaking the espresso with the brown sugar “adds another dimension to the beverage”, “creates a rich texture on your palate by just adding air”, and “mellows” it.

You don’t need a cocktail shaker for this! You can use anything with a lid on it like a mason jar.

    Brown Sugar Simple Syrup

How to Make Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso | Shaken Latte| Starbucks Copycat recipe

Simple syrup is a sweetener made easily at home.

It combines an equal amount of sugar and water, dissolving the sugar, which makes a sweetening syrup most often used in cocktails.

Since simple syrup is already a liquid, using it versus granulated sugar allows it to mix in much better.

Using brown sugar gives this easy syrup an almost caramel flavor.

We infuse it with a cinnamon stick too giving it a delicious natural cinnamon flavor.

If youd prefer to leave the cinnamon out, just omit the cinnamon stick. It can be added to a jar and chilled immediately after simmering.

NOTE: the longer the cinnamon stick sits in the syrup, the stronger the cinnamon flavor will be.

Can I Use Other Types Of Milk

Absolutely! If youd like to switch things up with the type of plant-based milk that you usethats totally fine! The world of plant-based milk is constantly expanding. From the classics like coconut milk, cashew milk, soy milk and almond milk, we now have delicious options like oat milk, and even potato and quinoa milk.

    What Exactly Is Shaken Espresso

OK, so if you’re new to the idea of shaken espresso or just never got it from Starbucks, then I’ve got you covered! Basically, shaken espresso was invented in Italy where it’s known as “shakerato”. It consists of a single or double shot of espresso with ice and sugar or syrup, which is then all shaken in a cocktail shaker. That’s it.

According to an article that I read, the reason for shaken espresso being so popular has a lot more to do with a variety of factors outside of just taste like:

    • The drink is customizable and is easy to make even at home.
    • You will experience light smoothness due to the aeration and chilling in the shaker that makes this drink incredibly refreshing.
    • A delicious and long-lasting froth that is infused with flavor.
    • Shaken espresso has plenty of caffeine to power you through the day.
    • Shaking adds an extra dimension and some visual flair behind the counter and the soothing sound of swooshing ice.
