Ratio Of Ingredients In Shaken Espressos

Make Starbucks Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso at Home

I did a lot of research to determine the ratio of ingredients for a shaken espresso and came across lots of conflicting information. In fact, I found entire Reddit threads from Starbucks baristas confused about how they should be making the drink.

The biggest confusion is in terms of how much syrup to use. The Starbucks website calls for 4 pumps in a grande and since a pump of syrup is about ½ ounce, that would be 2 ounces of syrup. However, many baristas claim that for shaken espressos, they’re only supposed to use ½ pumps… Which would mean 1 ounce of syrup total. Baristas couldn’t even agree on the correct amount!

Ultimately, I’m recommending somewhere in between that with 1 ½ ounces of toasted vanilla syrup in this drink. However, if you want sweeter, you can add more… And if it’s too sweet, you can use less. That’s the beauty of making Starbucks drinks at home!

Aside from that, we know they use 3 shots of espresso in a grande shaken espresso, which is 3 ounces.

They don’t specify the milk amount, but ½ cup filled up my grande ice-filled cup and tasted perfect.

How To Toast The Vanilla Bean

Step 1: First we grab our vanilla bean to toast.

Step 2: Split it in half and scrape out the seeds.

Step 3: Chop it up into small pieces.

Step 4: Then cook on medium heat stirring fairly often for about 1-2 minutes. When they are done they will smell very fragrant and will have lightened a bit in colour.

Step 5: Remove from the heat.

Step 6: Use a spice grinder, pestle and mortar or a cutting board and a rolling pin to crush it into fine pieces.

Irish Cream Cold Brew

There are 275mg of caffeine, 2g of protein, 14g of fat, 26g of sugar, and 240 calories in a Starbucks Venti Irish Cream Cold Brew. The drink has less amount of calories compared to other iced coffee varieties. However, the caffeine count is quite high.

Starbucks Irish Cream Cold Brew ingredients are cocoa powder topping, Irish cream cold foam, brewed coffee, Irish cream syrup, and Ice. The barista pours Irish cream syrup over Starbucks cold brew, vanilla, sweet cream cold foam, topping with bits of cocoa.

Shaken Expresso Drinks Are A Lower Calorie Option At Starbucks

One benefit of the new shaken espresso drinks is they are lower calorie than their dairy counterparts.

A grande iced vanilla latte has 190 calories. Compare that with the Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso at 140 calories and the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso at 120 calories.

However, these drinks remain sugar and caffeine bombs as they are made with four pumps of flavor syrup and three shots of espresso each. Each pump of syrup clocks in at 20 calories and five grams of sugar.

Can I Make This Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso Drink Hot

Yes and no. Hear me out, this drink has its own special technique that makes it unique. The shaking of the espresso with the ice is what gives this drink its unique attributes. So technically you cant make the exact thing because you wouldnt be able to shake a hot espresso with syrup.

But you can make it as a regular latte. Start with your toasted vanilla syrup at the bottom of your cup, add in the espresso shots then top it off with frothed or hot oatmilk. So it will taste pretty similar but in hot drink form.

Made with Starbucks Blonde espresso, the new iced beverage is the latest addition to Starbucks Iced Shaken Espresso drinks the chain launched in March 2021. The lineup already includes Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso and Iced Chocolate Almondmilk Shaken Espresso.

Billed as offering an invigorating, new toasted twist on the classic vanilla flavor, Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso, which will be part of the permanent Starbucks menu and available all year in U.S. stores, features espresso with notes of caramelized vanilla that is shaken with ice and topped with oat milk. As an added spring-in-your-step benefit, the drink clocks in at under 200 calories.

Vanillas alter ego is coming, the coffee chain cryptically teased Monday in , ahead of the new drinks official launch, promising in a caption that, in the U.S. and Canada, it would be shaking up everything you thought you knew about vanilla.

How Does It Compare To The Other Shaken Espresso Beverages

Every Shaken Espresso beverage features a careful ratio of sweetness and rich espresso flavoring, but each one is a bit unique. The Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso tasted and felt lighter than the chocolate and brown sugar iterations of the drink. We also found that the oat milk and vanilla pairing created an extra dimension of complementary flavors that’s not quite so evident in the others.

How To Make Toasted Vanilla Syrup

The first thing you’ll want to do is make your syrup since it will need time to cool. I have a very detailed post on making vanilla syrup… This follows the same basic technique, except you’ll toast your vanilla bean before turning it into syrup. I also simmer my vanilla bean in the syrup mixture to infuse more of the toasted vanilla flavor instantly.

If you’re looking for the best vanilla beans to purchase, these Grade B vanilla beans will work perfectly.

Before toasting it, I slice the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and then into small pieces.

You have two different options for toasting your vanilla bean. You can put it on a tray in your toaster oven for a few minutes, stirring it on occasion and being sure to watch it carefully so it doesn’t burn. You’ll know it’s done when it emits a yummy toasted vanilla fragrance.

Or you can put the vanilla bean in a skillet over medium-low heat and cook, stirring on occasion, for about 2 minutes, until fragrant.

I tried both methods and both worked well, so it’s really a matter of preference and, of course, if you happen to have a toaster oven or not.

Once the vanilla bean is toasted, put the water and sugar in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.

Lower heat, add toasted vanilla bean pieces, and let mixture simmer for about 10 minutes until sugar is completely dissolved and mixture has thickened a bit.

Pour the toasted vanilla syrup into a heat-proof bowl or mason jar and let cool. Syrup will thicken more as it cools.
