Nespresso Original Vs Vertuo: Do You Get Fewer Choices Of Coffee Capsules

Nespresso Vertuo Pop – Coffee preparation

In a nutshell, you’ll get a much wider range of coffee options and prices with Nespresso Original machines, as you aren’t tied into Nespresso-branded pods.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the key differences in capsule range and price:

Where To Buy Nespresso Pods In Store

Nespresso’s store locator will point you in the direction of a brick and mortar boutique near you.

If you prefer shopping in-person over buying your coffee pods online, you can do so at any of Nespresso’s boutiques throughout the United States. This store locator will point you in the direction of the one closest to you. Nespresso’s store locator also lists which of their boutique locations do double duty as a coffee pod recycling point.

Single Serve Coffee Makers

Single-serve coffee machines have become quite well-known in the market. Theyre fast and convenient for households that have fewer coffee lovers.

Even novices can learn how to use one in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is insert a pod or capsule into the machine and press the start button. The machine then pierces both ends of the coffee pod, which contains coffee grounds, and runs hot water through it.

The steaming hot coffee then flows right into your cup, ready to give you the boost you need to get on with your day.

Don’t Miss: Is Decaf Coffee Bad For Acid Reflux

Does Nespresso Coffee Contain Acrylamide

No, Nespresso coffee does not contain high levels of acrylamide.

Acrylamide is a common component that naturally forms in cooked products, such as bread, chips and cookies.

Acrylamide levels in coffee are below references values set by the European Commission and are therefore not a concern.

In fact, Nespresso coffee is always below those levels.

Get The Recycling Bag

Nespresso Boutique

Nespresso makes specialized bags to recycle Nespresso pods. You must use Nespressos bag to recycle the pods! Otherwise, the pods wont be accepted because the bags themselves are also recycled with the pods.

You get a recycling bag when you order pods through Nespressos website. Nespresso wont ship a recycling bag on its own, so youll need to order at least a sleeve of pods. You can find the bag under the accessories section or add it at checkout, and you can order two bags each time.

If you prefer to buy pods at a Nespresso boutique, you can get the recycling bag there as well.

What To Look For

Key differences between Nespresso machines that you’ll want to consider are:

  • Size – Nespresso machines range from tiny models around the size of a travel kettle to substantial machines approximately half the size of a microwave.
  • Capacity – the size of water tank and capsule bin vary between models, which affects how often you’ll need to add more water and empty the bin, especially if you’re using the largest Vertuo capsules.
  • Milk frothing – if you want to be completely hands-off, choose a model with automatic frothing from the Lattissima range. Other models either have a steam pipe for manual frothing , or can be bought with the standalone Aeroccino 3 automatic milk frother for around £50 extra.
  • Personalisation – some models offer you additional control over the temperature and length of your brew. The Creatista allows you 11 different levels of milk frothing, for precise coffee-making.
  • Smartphone controls – the Expert machines can be controlled via the Nespresso app on your smartphone or tablet, using Bluetooth.

Nespresso: A Brief Overview

Nespresso was developed by a Nestle employee named Erich Favre in 1976, making it the oldest single-serve coffee-making machine. The brand still operates under the Nestle Group. You can currently find Nespresso in over 70 countries and 700 locations.

While they are rather popular in the European coffee industry, they havent quite impacted the American market in the same way.

When it comes to Nespresso, youll find two options:

  • The Original Line

Here are some key differences between the two lines:

Nespresso Pod Not Inserted Correctly

If you have an Original Nespresso machine, the flat lid part of the pod should be facing you. The dome-shaped end of the pod should be facing the back of the machine. When inserting the pod into the brewing chamber, make sure the lever is all the way up and open. This will allow the capsule to sit correctly in the brewing chamber. Then slowly close the lever. If you have any trouble closing the lever, make sure the pod is lined up correctly and not at any angle.

Inserting a pod into a Nespresso Vertuo machine is easy. Open the brew head and place the capsule in the pod holder. The dome shape will be facing down and you should only be able to see the foil lid.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Breakfast Blend

Nespresso Barista Masterclass – Your Original Machine Coffee | UK & Ireland

Pod Type:Disposal:REASONS TO BUYREASONS TO AVOID

Typically when we think of a breakfast blend, we imagine a light-bodied cup of coffee with an enlivening amount of brightness. Unfortunately, we didn’t find those profiles in the Green Mountain Breakfast Blend.

Upon brewing a cup, we immediately noticed a roasted, bordering on burnt aroma, which on our first sip, led us to a woody flavor profile that had notes of toasted barley. We found the aftertaste to be a bit ashy and the body cup to be watery. The deep flavor profiles, combined with the weak body, made for an unbalanced brew that you might say wasn’t our cup of tea or coffee, for that matter.

Water Tank Air Lock Limiting Water Pressure

If you havent used your Nespresso machine in a long time or if you accidentally ran it without water in the tank, there could be air bubbles interfering with the water flow and water pressure. Your machine pump will make an unusually loud noise as the water tries to get past the air bubbles. If any water does start coming out, you may notice many air bubbles in it.

For an Original Nespresso machine, you will want to try running water through the machine. Follow these steps:

  • Fill the water tank to the MAX line.
  • Turn the machine on and open the lever to eject any capsule.
  • When the machine has warmed up, press the button to make an espresso or lungo. The pump will begin making noise.
  • Inspect the area where you would normally place a pod. If you see steam or water, youve solved the problem. If not, youll need to repeat this process. It could take anywhere from 5 to 10 tries or more.
  • Once you see steam or water, close the lever and run another 5 espressos or lungos with no pod in the unit.

Unfortunately, you cant run a water only cycle with Vertuo machines because they require a pod with a barcode to be inserted in order to brew. You could try to take a pod, carefully cut the foil off, discard the coffee grounds, rinse it out and then place it in the machine. Fill the water tank to the MAX line and press the button to start brewing. As noted above you may have to do this 5, 10 or more times until water starts to come out.

Where To Buy Nespresso Vertuo Pods& Original Pods

If you want to stock up on coffee or espresso capsules, you may be wondering who sells Nespresso pods in stores or online. Your options will be much more limited if you want to buy Nespresso capsules in stores. However, there are many more options if you shop online. I put together a summary of where to buy Nespresso pods in store and online so you can find the best place to buy for you.

Dunkin’ Donuts Original Blend Medium K

Coffee Order Online #WhichCoffeeIsTheStrongest Info: 6062509231 # ...

Pod Type:Disposal:REASONS TO BUY

The Dunkin’ Original Blend is reminiscent of the classic cup served at your local Dunkin Donuts cafe. With aromas likened to earthy greens, you transition nicely from the inviting earthy smell to flavors best described as nutmeg and dark chocolate. While not too noticeable, the coffee’s subtle brightness departs quickly to an astringent aftertaste that leaves your mouth feeling dry.

This relatively light-tasting blend wasn’t our favorite, with a texture not unlike skim milk. However, we think it will appeal to all those East Coast die-hard Dunkin’ fans.

The Original Donut Shop Decaf K

Pod Type:Disposal:REASONS TO BUYREASONS TO AVOID

The decaf version of the Original Donut Shop coffee pod offers a very similar, although not entirely identical, taste profile. A chocolaty aroma gives way to a flavor profile that tastes like baker’s chocolate and toasted grains. This decaf pod is tasty enough to serve up as a quick post-dinner brew.

With medium acidity levels, there is a spike in brightness right as the sip finishes that then transitions nicely into a lingering taste of cacao. It was our favorite decaf pod with a smooth body and an outstanding balance of flavor and aroma.

Nespresso Original And Compatible Capsules

Nespresso Original capsules come in one size, but can make three different-sized drinks. Some people double up on capsules to make a longer drink that’s still nice and strong, although this will cost you twice as much.

  • Nespresso has many different types and intensities of Original coffee capsules available, including single-origin, decaf and special-edition versions.
  • There is a wide range of third-party Nespresso-compatible capsules to choose from.
  • The capsules are smaller and more easily stored.

Nespresso brand capsules are only available from the Nespresso website or in one of Nespressos own stores , whereas you can buy Nespresso-compatible pods in just about every major supermarket and online.

Some Nespresso-compatible pods are much cheaper, and there are also options which claim to be compostable .

Cafe Bustelo Espresso Style K

Pod Type:Disposal:REASONS TO BUYREASONS TO AVOID

Billed as “Latin” style coffee, Cafe Bustelo is a dark roast blend intended to be doctored up with milk and sugar. That said, it is delicious enough all on its own. Although it is one of the darker roasts we sampled, it was one of the few dark roasts that didn’t come across as burnt. The roast was dark enough to get even the sleepiest motors running but not at the cost of losing an interesting flavor profile.

The darkness of the roast translated well into deep flavor profiles of caramelized sugar and hazelnut. Certainly not the pods for those looking for a light or mild cup, this rich and well-balanced coffee will be favored by those who prefer their coffee bold or those who want a cup that can stand up to milk and sugar without tasting diluted.

Nespresso Vertuo Pop – Machine settings

Nescaf Dolce Gusto Pods

Nescafé pods are made of No. 1 and No. 5 plastics, according to Nestlé, which makes Nescafé Dolce Gusto.

If you separate the individual components and your town recycles No. 1 and No. 5 plasticsyou should be able to recycle the plastic filter and pod shell. However, you might need to carefully use a sharp edge to separate the components.

A potentially easier alternative is to use Nestlés pod recycling program, which was created in partnership with TerraCycle. You simply call Nestlé customer service and you will be sent a TerraCycle recycling box that you can fill with used pods and send back to be recycled.

Where To Buy Nespresso Compatible Capsules Online

If you have an Original machine like the Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ, Creatista or Lattissima, you can also find some third party compatible capsules online. These are usually priced at a discount vs authentic Nespresso pods, so can be a good option if you are trying to save money. Who sells Nespresso compatible pods online? One popular site is Gourmesso. You can get a 10 pack of pods there for just $4.99!

Peet’s Decaf Especial K

Pod Type:Disposal:REASONS TO BUYREASONS TO AVOID

The Peet’s Decaf was our least favorite pod of the group. Producing a loamy aroma with hints of grapefruit, we were expecting an exciting flavor profile. Instead, a bitter and ashy-tasting brew greeted our taste buds. Though the coffee features a touch of brightness, the finish was highly astringent, leaving our tasters’ mouths dry and in need of a sip of water. The body and brightness blended well with the citrusy aroma, but it felt out of balance given the deep flavor profiles. Although advertising a “bright and smooth” cup, Peet’s Decaf was incredibly burnt tasting with a harsh finish. The only redeeming quality was the slight amount of pleasant brightness it offered before sharply leaving your tongue with an ashy aftertaste.

Original Lever Not Closed Completely Or Vertuo Lid Not Locked

Compostable Nespresso Pods

If your used capsule container is too full, the lever or lid may not be able to fully close. Vertuo machines will give you a red or orange light error, but Original machines wont. If you try to brew a Nespresso pod while the lever is slightly open, there will not be enough pressure built up inside the chamber to pierce the capsule.

Empty the used capsule container. Then insert a new pod and try to close the lever all the way. On some models like the Creatista Plus, you should not have to use much force at all. Other models, like the Essenza Mini, may require you to push it down a bit harder. As long as you are using an official Nespresso pod and it is inserted correctly, pushing down on the lever a bit firmly shouldnt hurt your machine.

Are Nespresso Pods Recyclable

Simply put: yes, Nespresso pods are recyclable because theyre made mainly of aluminum.

Nespresso and other single-serve coffee manufacturers get a lot of hate for the capsule system. But, research actually found that Nespresso coffee pods are the most sustainable option for getting your caffeine kick.

Nespresso coffee pods are made from aluminum and food-shellac coating. This is important because:

  • It keeps coffee fresh for a long time. I use my pods seasonally, and some wait for months to be used. Aluminum keeps the coffee grounds fresh for months.
  • Aluminum is recyclable. Its one of the easiest materials to recycle, and almost none of it goes to waste during the recycling process. Once the pods are recycled, aluminum is used for a wide range of items, including more Nespresso capsules.

Creating aluminum pods was a great environmental call by Nespresso because aluminum can be recycled forever. Actually, 75% of the aluminum ever produced is still being used today. Plus, recycled aluminum emits fewer greenhouse gases because it isnt a virgin material. Lastly, recycled material avoids the need to dig more natural resources. Thats a lot different compared to pods made of plastic .

Nespresso takes sustainability seriously, and the company is a B-Corp, which is reserved for companies that meet a high standard of environmental performance.
