The general process for making shaken espresso is to add hot espresso, sugar or simple syrup, and ice to a cocktail shaker and shake until combined and cold.

Most shaken espresso drinks in the US are then topped with some type of milk.

Americanos are a great way to smooth out espresso. This lighter coffee drink is an espresso cut with hot water. However, not everyone loves just plain coffee.

If you like the idea of a lighter espresso drink, but also like to add cream or milk to your coffee, the iced Americano with oat milk is a great alternative to dairy.

Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

The iced brown sugar oat milk espresso is a Starbucks drink that combines shaken espresso, oat milk, and brown sugar syrup. Its essentially an iced latte, but the espresso is shaken for a frothy texture and it has slightly less milk. The Starbucks version of this drink says it uses brown sugar syrup to add a hint of warmth, but in our opinion its difficult to detect in the flavor. This homemade version brings all the flavor notes in strong! Heres what youll need:

  • Brown sugar syrup: made in 5 minutes with brown sugar!

How Does The New Drink Taste

I shared my first impressions of the new Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso in a YouTube video.

Honestly, I wasnât that impressed by it. Again, I love the OG oatmilk shaken espresso that Starbucks makes with brown sugar. Oatmilk is naturally less creamy than cowâs milk, and has a toasty, nutty flavor. The brown sugar feels like it complements that, adding some much-needed depth to the drink thatâs lost when you leave out the dairy milk.

To me, the vanilla flavor in the Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso felt too thin and surface-level. It felt like the drink was just flavored like vanilla, rather than the vanilla flavor integrating with the other flavors in it.

I felt like I could be drinking an iced espresso with a bit of vanilla extract thrown in, versus with the brown sugar version of the drink, where it feels like the sugar adds depth, sweetness, and caramel notes. I also didnât taste the âtoastedâ element to the vanillaâagain, it just felt like Starbcucksâ normal vanilla syrup.

Still, the drink is definitely refreshing, and thereâs the caffeine kick to enjoy. I can see why itâs more of a Spring drink, versus the deep toastiness of the OG shaken espresso, which feels more suited to cold winters. Some people seem to really enjoy it, based on early reviews. Itâs also cool that itâs officially vegan and approved by PETA.

Can I Make This Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso Drink Hot

Yes and no. Hear me out, this drink has its own special technique that makes it unique. The shaking of the espresso with the ice is what gives this drink its unique attributes. So technically you cant make the exact thing because you wouldnt be able to shake a hot espresso with syrup.

But you can make it as a regular latte. Start with your toasted vanilla syrup at the bottom of your cup, add in the espresso shots then top it off with frothed or hot oatmilk. So it will taste pretty similar but in hot drink form.

  • Vanilla bean pods This is what we will be toasting for this recipe. I u=only used half a vanilla bean pod to keep price in mind and used vanilla bean paste to substitute for the rest of the flavor here.
  • Vanilla bean paste This is gonna be used to make our toasted vanilla syrup.
  • Granulated sugar We will be using the granulated sugar to sweeten and make our syrup taste toasty.
  • Espresso Starbucks uses blonde roast espresso for their shaken espressos.
  • Oatmilk I love using the Chobani vanilla oatmilk or extra creamy oatmilk for this drink since it yields something delicious!
  • Water You will need a little water to make the syrup.

Is Iced Shaken Espresso The New Cold Brew

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

Cold brew used to be my afternoon coffee drink of choice, but the caffeine content in cold brew is so high that I had to cut back. Then, I heard that Starbucks Iced Shaken Espresso drinks were getting even more popular than cold brew and I knew I had to give them a try!

Make iced shaken espresso by shaken freshly brewed espresso and sweetener over ice. Then, pour over fresh ice and top with milk of choice.

There is about 120mg of caffeine in 2oz of espresso and 200mg of caffeine in 16oz of cold brew. SO I am actually getting less caffeine from the espresso drink and I can even make decaf ones if I want to.

The other day I saw a Tik Tok video of a girl who works at Starbucks making their new drink a brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso which supposedly launches in 2 weeks. Well, I got way too excited and decided I need the drink NOW. So, I hopped into the kitchen and got to work. Homemade brown sugar syrup? Check. Shaken espresso? Now that I know what that is, check. Oat milk? Always check. Always have oat milk in this house!

Basically, this drink is what dreams are made of. The brown sugar syrup is super easy and not only contains all that delicious brown sugar flavour, theres also vanilla and cinnamon in there. Also, dont let the fancy name scare you. Shaken espresso is literally just espresso with a few ice cubes, plus the syrup, shaken vigorously until foamy. Its pretty cool! Then, just add it all to your cup and top with oat milk. Thats it!

You can make a double batch or even quadruple batch of the syrup and just keep it in a jar in the fridge. That way you can make these all week and it will be faster than driving to your closest Starbucks! Now, Im sure this recipe isnt exact, as I havent actually tried the drink yet but I can safely say this drink is GOOD. So go ahead and treat yourself today!
