Great Little Coffee Machine Just A Bit Unreliable

Philips 4300 LatteGo | Crew Review

The quality of the coffee is very good and consistent as well as the temperature. The only negative is the unreliable action of the on/off button, sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes or so to be activated.

Hi Mick,

Thank you for posting this review. Were glad to hear youre happy with your coffee machine.

Ive had this machine for approximately 6 months now. I cant find a fault with this unit. It makes great coffee, quick to set up and use and very easy to clean.

Overall Review: Philips 4300 Automatic Espresso Machine

This machine is a bit smarter than the previous version and it makes a few more drinks too. The espresso is outstanding, and the machine is so easy to use and to clean. Its got a huge water tank and a smaller footprint than some other automatic machines. I love that it has a ceramic burr grinder and that the brew group is removable and easily cleans under running water. Ditto for the LatteGo container which cleans up well and couldnt be easier to use. Compared to something like a Nespresso, theres no pods to recycle either.

Downsides? Honestly, I am struggling to find something about this machine I didnt like. I suppose it could be the price. While it is expensive at $899 USD/$1400CAD, that price is actually substantially more affordable than a lot of other similar super automatic espresso machines.

I can definitely recommend the Philips 4300 LatteGo if youre in the market for a fully automatic espresso machine that can do more.

What Is An Automatic Espresso Machine

Automatic espresso machines do all the work of making espresso for you: they grind the beans, tamp down the grounds, heat the water and extract the espresso under high pressure. They will also clean themselves and give you automatic feedback and instructions. It takes all the work out of enjoying espresso and espresso-based drinks.

The machines dont use pods or plastic cups you get fresh ground espresso from exactly the beans you choose to use, and your coffee is made fresh at the moment.

Many automatic espresso machines will also have some kind of milk heating and frothing ability some use a traditional wand steamer while others have containers and tubes that do it automatically.

As I noted, these machines can be expensive. The Jura lineup will set you back about $2000. The Philips 3400 LatteGo by comparison is about $899USD/$1400CAD.

Philips 4300 Lattego Vs 3200 Lattego

Conversely, the Phillips 3200 LatteGo is a step down from the 4300. Just like the Philips espresso machines above, the majority of the technical specifications are the same, aside from a few changes.

It functions on 60 Hz, 120V as opposed to the 4300s 50 Hz, 230V energy values. Additionally, it doesnt have a TFT display like the Philips 4300. Rather a small touch screen display along with buttons to choose your coffee beverage.

There are no user profile options, although the machine will remember the settings of your last drink. The aroma settings on the 3200 only have three levels, but the adjustable milk and coffee length and coffee temperature control are the same as the 4300.

Costing $799.00, the 3200 has a smaller drink selection with only espresso, cappuccino, regular coffee, latte macchiato, and americano available.

Large Water Tank & Adjustable Spout

Another impressive feature is the large water tank which holds 1.8L of water. A filter can also be inserted into the machine to cut down on the need for descaling or if you have crappy tasting water.

The drink spout on this machine is also height- adjustable to to create room for a variety of coffee and espresso cups.

    My First Impressions: Well Designed

Can a $1400 espresso machine be WORTH the investment? Philips 4300 automatic espresso maker review

Anyhow, lets keep this Philips 4300 LatteGo review rolling. The machine itself has a relatively compact footprint, measuring just under the size of two sheets of copy paper laid side by side. Its tall enough to fit under most cabinets, too. For exact measurements, check out the specifications chart below.

Aside from that, the casing is mostly plastic with a spray painted mirrored silver trim. The only color offered for the 4300 is this back and silver style, which I can appreciate. Despite the fact that its all plastic, the Philips 4300 still looks good.

The LatteGo container sits at a slight angle over the steam spout, and is easily removable for cleaning. Speaking of cleaning, the water tank is also removable, as is the brew group and drip tray.

The Philips 4300 also comes with the lubricant for the brew group, a measuring scoop for the ground coffee bypass and an AquaClean filter, which is nice. More on that in a bit.

    Milk System: Philips 3200

After only a few brewing sessions, I can already tell that Philips 3200 has a better milk system. Despite being equipped with a steam wand similar to 3200, 4300 fails to deliver dry and airy foam, essential for making cappuccinos and lattes. With Philips 3200, I can get microfoam and engage in latte art. The case is not the same with 4300.

Thoughts On The New Philips 2021 Models

What coffee drinkers can expect in 2021 from the Saeco Philips banner is a collection of 11 fully automatic espresso machines that offer a range of functionality and price points.

The new 2021 models seem to have drawn some of the best features from both the top tier Saeco machines with coffee personalization features and the unique LatteGo system of their earlier Philips models. The price point for the new models are mid to low range making affordability attractive.

The new releases also have a more attractive aesthetic. What has remained the same is the two year warranty offered by the manufacturer giving consumers the confidence to buy knowing that any issues they may face will be taken care of by the manufacturer. This is a clear sign that Philips stands behind their product and they have full faith that their new releases will deliver consumer satsifaction.

Refresher On The Different Types Of Espresso Machines

If youre new to the world of espresso, or youd like to brush up on your knowledge, heres a breakdown of semi-automatic vs. super-automatic coffee makers.

Semi-automatic coffee machines give you more control in the espresso brewing process. You control how long to brew espresso and usually can control pressure, temperature, and volume. Essentially, you have much more control over how the espresso will taste.

You also have to do more work with the semi-automatic, including grinding, tamping, and loading the portafilter.

Super-automatic espresso machines, also called fully automatic , require less input from you. These machines have preset options, so all you have to do is loads the coffee beans and press a button, and the machine will brew your coffee beverages. If you want the machine to do the majority or all the work for you, go for a super-automatic espresso machine. However, semi-automatic machines can make a more nuanced drink and they are cheaper.

Note: Semi-automatic and fully-automatic machines have some similar functions, such as the grinding presets and temperature shut-off for the milk wand. But, youll have more work to do for semi-automatic machines. Most importantly, youll need to place coffee grounds in the filter basket, tamp, and load the portafilter.

The LatteGo milk system and removable brew group makes keeping the machine clean as easy as, well making an espresso.

And what an espresso it makes! Still, I cant help but wonder if the grinder would have been quieter if Philips had included more sturdy housing. That said, theres just no arguing with this automatic espresso machines price tag.

    Key Features

Ceramic Grinder & Sealed Bean Hopper

I was impressed to see this machine has a ceramic burr grinder built in. I bought a dedicated ceramic burr grinder a few years ago when I was making manual espressos and I can tell you they are expensive but worth every penny thanks to their durability and precision of grind

On the Philips 4300, you can adjust the grind to one of 12 settings too from coarse to fine. The large bean hopper can easily hold a pound of coffee and it seals up well too to keep beans from getting stale. The lower the grind setting, the finer the coffee beans are ground and the stronger the coffee.

Worth noting too is that you can use pre-ground coffee to make regular coffee. I actually tried using pre ground espresso, and its quick and easy to use just pour a spoonful of ground espresso into the little bin, then you do need to adjust your setting so the machine knows to use the ground coffee. Its easy enough to switch the setting and a great shot comes out in seconds.

What Users Are Saying About Philips 4300 Espresso Machine

Almost all the users, including experts, have a favorable attitude toward this espresso machine. There are many exciting features in the device I like. But, still has some drawbacks there.

The first thing all the users love is its long time running without descaling. Thanks to Aquafilter filtering the water, you dont need to descale the machine before 5,000 shots. This feature is like heavens blessing for lazy people like me. But, still, you have to rinse the brewing portion once a week.

The machine is compact. And easily fit into a narrow space between other appliances. Also, making espresso is extremely easy with the device. The frother works pretty well.

But the most appealing feature is its profile system, which allows users to create their profile with their adjustment. This is a unique feature of Philips 4300 fully automatic espresso machine with lattego.

Even with so many advantageous features, you shouldnt overlook the potential issues. The thing I dont like about it is the loud noise of the grinder.

I am usually a morning person and want my beverage early in the morning. But, thanks to its noise, my whole family wakes up. So, I had to place it in the basement, away from my living room.

Also, the water reservoir capacity is somewhat small and made of subpar plastic. The manufacturers could do little better in this case. Thats all I found with my Philips 4300 espresso machine. Whatever it is, I loved this machine.
