How To Source Freshly Roasted Specialty Coffee Beans

Sumatran Single Origin Coffee Review

You dont always have to source coffee beans in their green form, you can also source coffee beans once they have been roasted.

There are a variety of methods to buy freshly roasted and speciality grade coffee beans, including

  • Direct from roaster
  • Online stores
  • Gourmet Grocers

You can source coffee beans from different portions of the world, so if you do not know where to source specialty coffee beans, then you should visit your local roasted coffee shops.

Storage is a very important factor to consider before coffee beans have been shipped.

So, you will have to order your coffee beans from the shop or the roasters who can store correctly.

For better results, ensure that the coffee bag has an air valve in it. These air valves continue to lose the gasses, and will keep the coffee fresh inside the packet.

The quality control, packaging, labelling and shipping are very much important with speciality coffee.

The Verdict What Is The Best Colombian Coffee

There’s no lack of high-quality, palatable coffee in Colombia, but you know how easily those can be ruined by improper roasting and grinding. That’s why we went to the trouble of researching the topic, taste-testing, and reading hundreds of reviews to come up with the best choice for your kitchen.

It’s a subjective opinion you’re free to disagree with, but we believe Blackwelder is the best Colombian coffee brand on the market. It’s down to top-shelf Bucaramanga beans, medium-dark roast, mild acidity, and the subtle notes of dark chocolate. The variety of beautiful and easy-to-use packaging is also a point in favor. Give it a try, and you’ll join hundreds of happy campers who’re raving about this bold and delicious java.

Of course, we cannot forget about the close runner-up that is Juan Valdez. It’s definitely worth your time and money, especially if you want to support the local growers and enjoy an authentic all-Colombian blend.

Where Is Coffee Grown

Organic Single Origin Coffee Beans 1 lbs Parrot Coffee

Most coffee plants are grown around whats known as the bean belt, an area around the equator between the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer. Its here thats home to the coffee capitals of the world such as Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia and Ethiopia, as these are the locations that coffees given the perfect growing conditions to thrive.

Interestingly, the location of where coffee beans are grown can alter the taste. Things such as climate, elevation and even soil type can impact the flavour of the coffee the beans produce.

Community Coffee Premium Ground Coffee

I consider this the best ground coffee for French press because of its high quality 100% Arabica beans. It has a coarse grind to it, so that makes it ideal for the French press coffee brewing method. From these beans, you get a coffee that is flavourful and full bodied. That means you can taste every component in the coffee. There isnt any bitter undertone once it is brewed, and I think that is the mark of a quality French press brew. The flavour can be a bit on the subtle side compared to some of the other options, so it may be too mild for you, depending on your tastes and what you are used to.

The only issue with this coffee is that it is packed in such a way that it can lose its freshness. It should be transferred to an opaque, airtight container and stored in a dark place to best results. Your coffee will stay fresher for longer.

How Do I Choose The Best Coffee

We can never stress this enough: always buy whole beans.

Pre-ground coffee might seem convenient, but you miss out on so much flavor to save so little time. It just isnt worth it.

Air is the enemy of flavorful, aromatic coffee. You accelerate the oxidation process once you crack the hard outer shell protecting your bean, which means the flavor is muted more quickly. The closer to brewing you grind, the fresher and more flavorful your cup of coffee.

So What Exactly Is A Coffee Roast

Coffee roast simply refers to the extent to which coffee beans have been roasted. Let us explain.

Before roasting, coffee beans have a green color and a grassy aroma. When they are subjected to the process of roasting , the beans start undergoing a gradual change in chemical composition and moisture content.

Before the roasting process, the beans may have moisture content in the neighborhoods of 10-12% db. After roasting, this percentage may reduce dramatically to about a third.

In addition, the process of roasting coffee triggers a myriad of chemical reactions that involve degrading some compounds, changing others, and creating new ones.

During the roasting process, the roasters use a device called an Agtron to analyze the degree of roast. Depending on market preferences, coffee beans may be lightly roasted or left to roast until they have a rich dark color.

The Agtron shows the degree of roast in numbers ranging from 25 to 95. Lower numbers illustrate darker roasts.

Understanding different types of coffee roast

The Coffee Variety To Look Out For

When youre looking at a genetic family tree for plants, theres a level thats underneath species: varieties. These are essentially genetic sub-species. Planting specific varieties can have major impacts on the farm-level, but most of them taste pretty much the same. There are a couple outliers, however.

The geisha variety is one of these outliers. The variety was brought from Ethiopia to Panama in the early 1900s, but was lost among the changing farm lines. In the early 2000s, the farm Hacienda La Esmeralda rediscovered the plant on its farm and began to grow it commercially.

Beans from this variety have a unique and exotic acidity that enhances the vibrant floral aromas. In the last twenty years, this variety has captured the imagination of the coffee world. Its certainly one you should trythrough you should be prepared to pay a pretty penny for it.

Our Approach To Sourcing Speciality Coffee Beans

Our approach

We pride our approach to sourcing specialty grade green coffee from the countries of origin based on four main principles. First and foremost we are committed to establishing and cultivating fair and sustainable, long-term, direct relationships with coffee producers and co-operatives. This means going beyond simply ordering coffee from an importer from an offer list. We aim to ensure ethical transparency in working practices with the producers we work with and our aim is to make sure that we invest in long term relationships with these producers. We practice science-based quality control on the coffees we buy to ensure we are working with only speciality grade coffees. We focus on the seasonality of the coffees we buy to ensure that we are bringing our customers the worlds freshest crops available. Speciality coffee is defined as coffees scoring 80+ on the SCA and CQI score sheets and having no primary defect in the cup or green coffee. We aim to source coffees scoring 84+.

Relationship coffees and direct trade

We are committed to using direct trade in sourcing our coffee in order to ensure a fair and transparent price for coffee producers that is above and beyond the Fairtrade base price. Though we are fortunate in the U.K. to have numerous specialty coffee suppliers, our goal has always been to source coffee directly from origin so that we can work towards building sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships with coffee producing communities.
