How Do You Make Iced Coffee At Home

Iced Coffee Vs Cold Brew

HOW TO MAKE STARBUCKS ICED COFFEE AT HOME | 2 WAYS

First, lets be clear: Iced coffee is not the same as cold brew. They are both popular kinds of cold coffee, but there are important differences.

Making cold brew is a time-intensive process. Cold brew is more about the method of preparing the coffee than the serving temperature of the coffee itself. For cold brew, you grind beans and steep them at room temperature for an extended period, typically between 12 and 16 hours. This produces a cool pot of coffee with an even, smooth taste.

Iced coffee is what were talking about. You take a hot cuppa and you turn it cold. You can brew the coffee as you normally would, using your favorite brewing method, and then you introduce it to ice via methods described below, to slightly dilute the flavor without eliminating it.

Cold Brew Iced Coffee Recipe

For this cold brew iced coffee recipe, youll need:

  • 1 quart sized Mason Jar
  • 1 cup of medium coarse ground coffee
  • 4 cups of filtered water
  • 1 coffee filter or cheesecloth
  • A glass container to store your cold brew coffee in the fridge
  • Ice cubes

Youll add your ground coffee to the mason jar , pour in the filtered water and stir. Place your covered coffee mix in the fridge and let brew for 12 to 24 hours. Then strain the grounds either through a coffee filter ;or through a cheesecloth into a glass container .

When youre ready to make your cold brew into iced coffee pour some of your cold brew over ice and enjoy. You can add water to dilute it, add some sugar along with your favorite milk/cream if you like. The unused cold brew can be stored in the fridge for up to two weeks, its best to store it without milk or cream so it doesnt spoil.

Here are a couple of great ways to brew your cold brew:

This recipe is quick, easy, budget-friendly, and tastes just like the gourmet coffee-shops, if not better!

But as always, nothing beats the homemade version taste-wise and money-wise. And with this easy perfect iced coffee recipe, you wont have to overpay for coffee ever again.

All you have to do is brew your coffee the night before using good-quality coffee beans. That way, it can come to room temperature by the time the morning comes around. Then you can whip up a batch of simple syrup, but only if you need it. A batch should last you for a few weeks, unless you like to douse your coffee in sugary goodness. No judgment here. Then;you can add a splash of milk or half-and-half, although I highly recommend the latter.

Iced Coffee Method: Overnight Cold Brew In A Mason Jar

  • Time: 18 to 24 hours
  • Overall rating: 7/10

About this method: To make cold brewed coffee, begin by grinding your beans until they are coarsely ground . Youll need 1 ounce of coffee beans for 1 cup of coffee. Stir together coffee and water in a Mason jar, then steep overnight for 18 to 24 hours. The next day, strain the coffee concentrate. Combine equal parts coffee and cold water.

Results: I found this to be a bold cup of cold brew . Nice flavors and aroma came through, but I did find it to have a slightly intense, bitter finish.;

My takeaway: This method is good. You can make a large batch and have it for up to two weeks. The concentrate is strong and you can adjust its strength to taste with how much water you put in. This is a great method for the people who really love a bold cup of coffee.

Use Coffee Ice Cubes For Better

How is Iced Coffee Made?

The best tip I can give you to level up your iced coffee is using coffee ice cubes instead of regular ice cubes.

These coffee cubes are made using brewed coffee that has been cooled completely. They are then frozen in an ice cube tray or ice cube bag.

Instead of melted ice cubes that turn into water again, the coffee ice cubes will flavor your iced coffee with even more coffee!

What Is The Best Coffee For Iced Coffee

The best iced coffee is made using brewed coffee of your choice. You can use coffee made using the Chemex, Hario V60, or even the French press.

Iced coffee can be made using any of the techniques listed above. Each coffee brewing technique makes for a different flavored iced coffee with unique flavor notes.

For me, using a pour over technique is the way to go. The coffee these coffee brewers produce is very balanced and tastes excellent cooled with a touch of milk added.

If youre going to make iced coffee for the first time, I suggest brewing coffee using your favorite coffee brewer, as you probably already like this coffee.

Is Iced Coffee Cold Brew Coffee

No, iced coffee isnt cold brew coffee, but I see where youre coming from.

The whole reason its not, is because cold brew starts out cold, while iced coffee starts out hot.

Also, theres a big difference in flavor between hot coffee thats been cooled, and cold brew coffee.;

Cold brew is a bit more delicate and doesnt usually go well with a lot of ice, even if its cold.

Iced Coffee Method: Aeropress Coffee Made With Room

  • Time: 2 minutes
  • Overall rating: 3/10

About this method: The people who love the Aeropress really love it . Aeropress is a cylindrical device that on one end has a filter and basket for coffee. Water goes into the vessel and then another piece plunges the water through the filter directly into the cup. For hot coffee, you use hot water; for iced coffee, you start with room-temperature water. Once you pour water into the vessel, stir the coffee grounds and water for 1 minute, then plunge the contents into the cup. Add enough room-temp or ice-cold water to make 1 cup of coffee.

Results: While I appreciate how fast you can have your hand on a cup of iced coffee, this is a very lightly brewed coffee. The color was so light similar to iced tea. It was actually the lightest of all the brews. What did take me by surprise was that despite how light the brew was, the coffee itself had some really nice flavors come through.;

My takeaway: This is a great method for the people who prefer a lighter, less intense cup of coffee. I felt that the overall flavor was really nice, but would have liked to let the coffee grounds steep a little longer to get more or, alternatively,;to start this as a warm cup that I cooled down. This also is not a cold brew for a person who wants to add their favorite milk or alt milk. I found that the coffee flavor was muted enough as is.

Just Don’t Which I Strongly Advise Against When It Comes To Iced Coffee

Im only writing this paragraph because there are always experts who think powdered iced coffee is a good idea. Or those who drink a frappé from Mickey Ds without irony. Iced coffee from a Thermomix is also a slap in the face of every fragrance lover the keyword being instant coffee.

I can understand every one of you who doesnt feel like spending almost 10 dollars in a coffee shop for good iced coffee just because the owner has to pay rent for his Brooklyn apartment and the fees for the five-language daycare center with a dolphin therapist.

However, while good coffee isnt a cheap product, its certainly not so expensive that you should have to give up taste, freedom from chemicals and, above all, the fun of preparing it. As weve seen, making iced coffee really is as easy as pie.

Our second favorite way to make iced coffee at home is with a French press. We like this method because French press coffee is bolder and more full-bodied than other methods, making it well-suited for iced coffee. Cold brew has become the most common style of iced coffee in both cafes and grocery stores. It uses cold water and a long brew time to make a sweet and rich concentrate that can be diluted with water, milk, or any milk substitute.

It doesn’t require any specialized equipment to make though you can invest in a dedicated pitcher if you make it often. It can be easily produced in large batches, which makes it perfect to serve at your summer barbecues. It can be kept in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Can You Put Hot Coffee On Ice

Technically, you can simply pour hot coffee over ice. But I wouldn’t recommend it!

The ice will water down your coffee, and it won’t get as cool either … and perfect Iced Coffee needs to be quite cold.

If you’d prefer to make your drink with hot coffee, then I’d recommend using coffee ice cubes instead of regular ones … that way your coffee won’t be diluted and watery tasting. To make coffee ice cubes, simply fill an ice cube tray with leftover coffee, then freeze overnight.

In the morning, stir a few coffee ice cubes into your freshly-brewed coffee. The cubes will cool off your coffee without watering down the flavor like regular ice would. Once your coffee has cooled, stir in sugar and milk to taste, then top off with regular ice or more coffee ice cubes.

Iced Coffee Dos And Donts

The best way to make iced coffee is ultimately subjective because everyones tastes vary. But no matter which method you prefer, there are a few tips and tricks to help you create cracking icy joe each and every time. Here are our iced coffee dos and donts.

  • Do use freshly ground beans. If you grind them right before brewing, theyll have the most flavor.
  • Dont use pre-ground coffee. Okay, sometimes there might not be any choice, but if you have freshly ground beans, those are always a better choice!
  • Do choose medium or dark roast beans if youre going for a richer flavor. Lighter roasts will produce flavors that arent as potent.
  • Dont store beans improperly. They should always be stored in a container that is airtight and in a dark location to prevent the flavor from escaping.
  • Do use filtered water for the best tasting drink. Any contaminants that might be in tap water can affect how the beverage tastes.
  • Dont just put hot coffee in your fridge and then drink it cold. Well, you can, but it wont be nearly as delicious as it is when brewed properly.
  • Do use coffee cubes to avoid diluting the flavor of your brewed beverage. Simply freeze some of the brewed beverage and use those rather than regular ice cubes.
  • Dont use regular sugar in iced coffee, as it wont dissolve well. If you need to sweeten your java, simple sugar syrup dissolves easily but tastes the same.

What Type Of Coffee Should I Use

Like any cup of joe, you should choose high-quality coffee beans to make the coffee for your iced coffee recipe. I swear this is not a plug for Lavazza but I love their dark roast coffee. You can buy the beans on their own and grind them using a coffee grinder at home, or you can buy pre-ground coffee your local grocery store. It’s up to you!

I will often try to go to my fave local cafes as well and buy their house blends, or pick up some coffee from Starbucks. That way you get the same taste of your favorite coffee place without having to spend $5 per drink!
