What Is Crema And Why Should I Care

L’or Nespresso Coffee Pod Review | Onyx 12 | How do they compare to the Nespresso Kazaar capsules?

Even if youre accustomed to drinking espresso, you may not have experienced crema, or even know what it is. Crema refers to the foamy layer that can be produced when combining different processes to make espresso. Crema can vary in color and even texture, but it is general wheat to caramel color; it can even be described as reddish-brown, depending on the coffee beans originally used.

Crema is formed when by air bubbles combining with the natural oils of finely ground coffee. It has even been nicknamed the Guinness effect for acting it a similar way the stout does when its poured.

But how, or even if crema is formed depends on a variety of factors, and some that may prohibit it even forming, including:

  • Fine vs coarse grinds, with course being less than optimal
  • Over or under extraction
  • Too light of a coffee roast
  • A dirty machine, or a machine that has not been properly warmed
  • Less than fresh beans. Fresh beans will more naturally form crema because the oils are intact. Stale coffee beans may have very few natural oils and may have desiccated. The degassing process also impacts the ability to make crema.
  • Naturally processed beans are also a must for forming crema

A Big And Competitive Industry:

The coffee industry as a whole, espresso and Nespresso included, is a booming industry, as it has been historically and continues to be. And Americans especially love their caffeine boost: Americans drink an average of over 3 cups of coffee a day, and half of Americans drink espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, and iced coffee.

Independent coffeehouses in the United States report a $12 billion annual revenue, and even though overall production of coffee has decreased in the past several decades, the value of coffee has increased. The entire coffee industry in the United States is currently valued at somewhere between $30 and $32 billion dollars.

An average cup of espresso outcomes in at about $2.45, which may not seem like much, but adds up to about $50 a month, or a whopping $600 a year if you order a single espresso five days a week.

Maybe its in part due to the recession of 2008 that changed shopping habits, despite the economy relatively healthy now, but even some espresso lovers are more and more brewing at home rather than getting beverages out.

While up to 64 percent of Americans consume coffee and espresso every day, just under eighty percent reported brewing their beverage of choice at home. Likely, more and more Americans are opting to enjoy their espresso at home for a variety and even combination of reasons, including:

  • Affordability
  • Convenience
  • Customization

Can Nespresso Capsules Be Recycled

Yes! Nespresso capsules are made from recyclable aluminum, and the leftover coffee grounds inside the pods can even be composted. To make the process easier, Nespresso offers free capsule-recycling bags that can be dropped off at any UPS location or Nespresso boutique. The bags hold up to 200 OriginalLine capsules or 100 VertuoLine capsules. There are two stipulations, however: the recycling bags can only be ordered from Nespressos website, not third-party retailers, and customers must purchase a separate item, whether it be capsules or a Nespresso machine, to receive the bags. New York City residents have the option to recycle Nespresso capsules via normal recycling bins.

So Can I Make A Lungo Using A Nespresso Espresso Capsule

You shouldnt really make an espresso using a lungo capsule or vice versa. The coffee blends and their respective flavours are put together specifically with the extraction time in mind. Extracting an espresso capsule super slowly and with more water will just result in a weak, over extracted espresso that wont taste like it is intended. Similarly, it would be impossible to extract the full flavours of a lungo capsule by extracting under higher pressure and for a shorter period of time.

The story begins in Switzerland. The year, 1975. A Swiss engineer named Eric Favre was working for Nestlé when his wife, Anna-Maria, joked that her home country of Italy produced far tastier coffee. Whether it was sheer inspiration or a spark of competition, Favre began designing the first pod-based espresso maker. The married couple even traveled throughout Italy to study all things coffee during the prototype phase. Thus, Nespresso was born.

Half a century later, its one of the worlds largest coffee manufacturers, known for convenience and craftsmanship. The companys signature capsules come in a variety of blends, from light roast to dark to decaf, and weve rounded up our favorite ones below. Newer customers might want to double check what type of Nespresso machine they have, as VertuoLine machines only take Vertuo pods and OriginalLine machines only take Original pods.

How Is Caffeine Removed From Decaf Capsules

Nespresso;uses two different ways to remove the caffeine from their decaf coffees. The company says both of these processes are safe. One method is the water process. This involves soaking green coffee beans in hot water so that the caffeine dissolves. The other way is the carbon dioxide method. The first step is soaking the green coffee in water. Then, they use carbon dioxide to extract the caffeine.

Caffeine By Ounce Or Volume

When comparing regular espresso shots and lungo shots by caffeine by ounce, a clear victor emerges. A regular shot of espresso contains on average around 75 milligrams of caffeine, whereas since lungo shots are brewed using more water they contain more caffeine.

Although they may have slightly more caffeine in them the caffeine per ounce is lower.

This increase in water levels cause an increase in caffeine, because more water is used as a highly-pressurized stream. This longer, more forceful stream, extracts more caffeine from the coffee grounds.

When comparing regular espresso shots and lungo shots by caffeine by volume the lungo shot has more caffeine in it in total.

As an aside, a ristretto shot contains the highest concentration of caffeine by volume of any espresso variation but less in total overall caffeine.

So how does all of this compare to the popular Keurig machines?

Original Decaf Nespresso Pods

  • Firenze Decaffeinatois a dark-roast decaf espresso. It has bold roasted and cocoa notes. The texture is creamy and velvety.

What About The Pour Espresso Vs Lungo

The Nespresso OriginalLine range has 2 distinct families, the standard Espresso capsules, and the nearly identicle in size Lungo capsule. To compliment this, most nespresso machines have 2 buttons to dispense the correct amount of water. But what exactly is the difference?

Most of us are familiar with espresso. It forms the base of most of the barista drinks we know and love; such as the Cappuccino, Flat White, and Latte.

However, a lungo is slightly different. It is a longer coffee which more popular in European countries. The coffee is still extracted in the same way as and espresso shot, however, a lungo is designed to fill up more of your cup. What this means is that on the whole they can be a little milder but still maintains the same flavour and intensity.

A lungo is also sometimes called a stretched coffee, and in French it is called a café allongé. This shouldnt be confused, however, with an Americano, which is an Italian style coffee with hot water added. Also, not to be confused with a lungo is a long black, where you add a short black directly to the hot water basically the opposite of an Americano. The reason for this swap around is so you can pour the short black in as soon as its extracted, preserving more of the crema.

Now with a longer extraction comes more chance for that precious caffeine to be extracted. Even though the majority of the caffeine comes through in the first 40mls, we typically get an extra ~20% caffeine in a lungo pour.

Capsule Style Is Important

A single espresso will have less caffeine than a double espresso capsule, of course, and Nespressos guidelines state that double espresso capsules have less than 200 mg of caffeine. How much less is unclear but based on the 60-150 mg range overall, between 150 and 200 mg is a safe bet.

More helpfully, Nespresso says that Gran Lungo capsules have between 120 and 200 mg of caffeine. Thats a much smaller range and is more useful overall if youre trying to track your caffeine intake.

Nespresso Original Barista Creations Capsules Caffeine Content

Most Original line capsules will have between 55 and 65 mg of caffeine per pod. The most popular flavors are the barista creations. There is a cocoa, caramel and vanilla option, all medium roast blends. Cant choose? Try the variety pack!

  • Caramel Creme Brulee has a profile of caramel, coconut and vanilla. It is sweet and creamy, with a round mouthfeel.
  • Cocoa Truffle has dark and bitter cocoa flavors that will remind you of dark truffles. There is also a little almond and vanilla sweetness too.
  • Vanilla Eclair has a rich vanilla flavor and a velvety texture. It has a smooth and creamy taste, with a round mouthfeel. Theres an aroma of malted cereal and vanilla notes.
