Why Drink Bulletproof Tea

4 KETO COFFEE RECIPES | How To Make Bulletproof Coffee & MORE!

Bulletproof tea has a lot of the same benefits as bulletproof coffee does: energy, mental clarity, and tasting totally delicious!

Youll get the most benefit by using MCT oil, but there are other options:

  • MCT oil My favorite for a burst of energy, improving my focus, and adding rich flavor.
  • MCT oil powder Same benefits as MCT oil, but better for a sensitive stomach. However, it can form a film on top if the tea cools completely before you drink it.
  • Coconut oil Most cost effective and easiest to find in stores.
  • What Are The Potential Downsides Of Bulletproof Coffee

One of the main downsides of drinking a bulletproof coffee instead of breakfast is that you’re missing out on the opportunity to eat a nutrient-dense meal. Instead, you’re consuming a drink that’s high in fat, but lacks other valuable nutrients.

The fats included in bulletproof coffee are predominantly high in saturates for example, just 1 tbsp of unsalted butter supplies 12.3g fat, more than half of which are saturates. When combined with the recommended MCT oil, one cup of bulletproof coffee will supply more than your maximum daily reference intake for saturated fat and approximately 242 – 354kcal per cup .

Its well known that caffeine gives us a boost, and it does this by acting as a trigger on our adrenal glands, the organs which manage our stress response. High intakes of caffeine over an extended period of time may tire the adrenal glands, which will impact our endocrine system and subsequent hormonal balance. Also, some people find that consuming caffeine activates the stress response, and may increase the bodys reaction to perceived stress during normal daily activities, such as in a work environment. Some animal studies have also suggested that the effect of caffeine on our adrenals may be particularly relevant at certain life-stages, such as during puberty.

For some people, who are sensitive to the effects of caffeine, regular consumption may increase anxiety, headaches and cause sleep disturbance.

Is Bulletproof Coffee Good For You

Although claims suggest that bulletproof coffee may prevent hunger, support energy and be a weight loss alternative to breakfast, there is not enough evidence to confirm this. Moderate coffee drinking may have health benefits, although adding large amounts of saturated fat to your coffee may not be good for the longer-term health of some people. As a meal replacement, bulletproof coffee makes a poor nutritional alternative to a balanced breakfast.

If you’re considering incorporating bulletproof coffee into your diet, it’s worth checking that your blood fats are not elevated. The current advice for those with cholesterol problems is to avoid an excessive intake of saturated fats, including butter. Speak to your doctor if you’re concerned that your dietary choices may have an impact on your risk of heart disease.

Pregnant women are advised to minimise their consumption of caffeine and to eat regular balanced meals, so bulletproof coffee is unlikely to be appropriate.

Black Coffee And Keto: A Perfect Match

    How to Make Keto Coffee

Youre probably familiar with the basics of a keto eating plan. You have to give up most of the traditionally American diet staples: fast food, packaged and frozen food, cereal, bread, pasta and sugar.

What do they all have in common? They all contain lots of carbohydrates, and carbs can easily sabotage a keto diet. The reason is a bit complicated, but once you understand the basic science behind the ketogenic diet, it all makes perfect sense.

    • The body needs energy to function, of course. In normal circumstances, its generated when the carbohydrates in our diet are burned. The body turns the carbs into glucose , which is the fuel that powers the body and brain.
    • The keto diet, however, drastically reduces the amount of carbs you eat every day. A normal adult consumes between 225 and 325 grams of carbohydrates daily on a strict keto diet, though, youre limited to 20-25 per day.
    • That seemingly-ridiculous restriction has an important purpose. When the body doesnt get enough carbs to make glucose, it switches to whats known as a metabolic state of ketosis. In ketosis, the liver produces molecules called ketones which can be used as fuel in place of glucose.
    • Heres the last part of the puzzle: the body burns stored body fat in order to produce ketones. And fat-burning, as you undoubtedly know, is an important factor in effective weight loss.

Coffee with milk and sugar, though? A single cup can contribute 10 grams of carbs, or half of an entire days allowance.

    Health Benefits Of Coffee

Coffee is certainly a topic of conversation in the medical community. Headlines abound with either praise or caution surrounding this popular beverage.

Like anything, moderation is best too much caffeine can jack up your blood pressure, trigger insomnia, interact with certain medications, and increase your blood sugar.

In lesser amounts, coffee can be a great asset. Besides putting a little pep in your step, coffee may reduce the risk of Alzheimers, dementia, and liver disease, and increase cognitive function.

Theres also another great benefit it can help with weight loss by increasing your metabolic rate.

So at the end of the day, if youre generally healthy and you want to keep drinking your coffee, its probably fine. Just use one of these handy recipes to keep it keto!

How Many Carbs In Coffee Creamer

Carbs in coffee creamers vary by brand, but most coffee creamers are made with plenty of hidden carbs, such as sugar and even corn syrup solids!

This low carb coffee creamer recipe has just 0.6g net carbs per serving . The carb count is the same in the plain, vanilla and hazelnut flavors.

The chocolate and pumpkin flavors have just slightly higher carb counts, but still no more than 1g per serving.

    Sugar Alternatives That Contain Carbs

Lets first rule out two categories of sugar alternatives.

Natural caloric sweeteners, like maple syrup, coconut sugar and honey, are certainly sweet. Theyre certainly delicious. But theyre also very high in both carbs and calories, just as the word caloric implies. Coconut sugar adds just as many carbs as regular sugar does. Honey adds even more.

So-called sugar alcohols like erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol and mannitol are lower in calories and carbs than sugar, and do provide other benefits when used as sugar substitutes. For instance, they have low glycemic indexes, so they dont spike blood glucose levels and are safe for diabetics.

Thats why sugar alcohols are the sweeteners commonly found in products labeled sugar-free,diet or low-calorie. Theyre not really produced for the purpose of sweetening coffee, though theyre most often used in packaged and commercial products. But more importantly, low-carb by definition isnt as helpful to keto dieters as no-carb.

Vanilla Keto Coffee Recipe (SUPER EASY)

Should you drink coffee while fasting?

Ultimately, thats up to you. If a cup of coffee makes you feel good during your fast, go for it. As long as youre careful with what you add, coffee will not break your fast. In fact, it may even enhance it.

You can also opt for green tea or herbal tea during your fast, as neither will impact your metabolism.

And if you havent tried intermittent fasting yet, it may be worthwhile to give it a shot. This beginners guide to intermittent fasting has everything you need to get started today.

What Are The Benefits Of Drinking Keto Coffee

There are a lot of benefits to drinking Keto Coffee versus regular coffee. One of the main draws for people is the sustained energy that it provides. The caffeine in coffee often leads to a burst of alertness right away, but is quickly followed by a crash. The butter/ghee and MCT oil help to give you more energy that lasts a lot longer.

Another benefit of ketogenic coffee is the supply of healthy fats that keep you feeling full. Regular coffee makes your stomach feel empty, which often leads to food cravings. So this could help you lose a bit of weight if you struggle with food cravings after drinking your morning coffee.

    Best Sweeteners For Keto

Okay, so what are the best sweeteners for coffee, then?

Stevia and monk fruit extract have proven to be great contenders.

Theyre both all-natural, very sweet, calorie-free, and carb-free!

Not to mention, both have a zero glycemic index!

There have been various studies that suggest that even artificial sweeteners can induce cravings, which could make it more difficult to stay on track.

However, no such thing has been proven with Stevia and monk fruit extract, so we continue recommending them.

Tools And Tips For Making Keto Coffee

Now, youre going to think EVERYTHING Im about to say is crazy, but in my experience, Keto Coffee has been a lifesaver.

The first day I drank it, I had to force myself to eat because I was so full all day from the coffee, that I really didnt have any serious hunger.

Keto Coffee also made me feel like my coffee was super smooth. No bitter taste, and I loved it the MCT oil and butter help cut the strong taste, and using a milk frother to blend it is one of my favorite hacks to make sure your coffee isnt a big oil slick. It really helps to meld everything together.

This is a great opportunity to add my morning fiber, and collagen peptides to this drink. I find this to be a great way to get my supplements in during the day.

Use instant coffee to make things faster. Boil some water in an electric kettle, and everything is done in under a minute.

Finally I love Toranis sugar free syrups. Theyre amazing. Theyre VERY dirty keto though.

They have sucralose in them as the sweetener. So far, Sucralose hasnt done anything to kick me out of ketosis, or cause stalls/gains, but use it at your own risk.

There are definitely other ways to sweeten up your keto coffee if you really feel like you need it.

Why Add Fat To Your Coffee

How To Make Keto Coffee | FB Live

Sometimes as part of the Keto diet, you dont want to eat breakfast, but maybe you need something on your stomach so you dont get hangry.

This is where Bulletproof or Keto coffee comes in. By adding fat to your coffee, you add substance, thus feeding your body for the workout its about to have, or the day thats about to start.

But not just any fats, we want the healthy fats such as:

    • grass-fed butter
    • MCT oil or MCT oil powder
    • brain octane oil

The combination of fat and the caffeine in coffee is like a one-two punch to wake you up.

And we havent even gotten to the protein coffee yet.

    My Verdict On Bulletproof Coffee

Ive tried butter coffee a few times, and sometimes just add a teaspoon of coconut oil to my black filter coffee. I find it does give a more gentle, even caffeine release without the usual coffee jitters. It is also really satiating, and you might find you are not hungry for several hours after having a cup.

Many people take bulletproof coffee instead of their breakfast or to replace one of their meals, and although I think that its a handy alternative fuel source that can be used for convenience during a busy day or during intermittent fasting, I dont think it should replace a regular high-protein, satiating breakfast as youd be missing out on an array of essential nutrients found in real, whole foods.

Do you drink bulletproof coffee or have you ever tried it? What do you think did you notice any of the benefits? What do you add to pimp your butter coffee? Let me know in the comments below. In the meantime, here is a recipe for homemade bulletproof coffee with coconut oil and butter or ghee .

  • Gently pour in cold, filtered water at a ratio of 4-to-1 .
  • Stir gently to make sure all grounds are wet and cover container with plastic wrap.
  • Let it sit at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours. Taste it occasionally and discard the grounds when the coffee hits your sweet spot.

Tips For The Best Bulletproof Coffee

Vanilla Keto Coffee Recipe (SUPER EASY)
    • Use your favourite coffee. I love a good strong espresso coffee.
    • MCT Vanilla Powder is amazing in the bulletproof coffee. It adds a beautiful creaminess to the coffee.
    • I use salted butter. Salt and coffee together are a match made in heaven.
    • Add the egg if you want. It also adds extra fat and protein as well as making keto coffee super creamy. I add the egg particularly when following an egg fast meal plan.
    • Mix all the ingredients in a blender or Thermomix until creamy.
    • Bulletproof coffee can be consumed hot, cold or frozen. I like to pour some into an ice cube tray and freeze it. You can then use the ice cubes in a tasty summer keto iced coffee or keto coffee cocktail.

    Vegetarianism Vs Low Carb

    Hi Dr. Fung,

Some of my friends are vegetarian/vegan followers, although they do not oppose fasting. I understand that theres an intersection between low carb and vegetarian, however, logically speaking, its unlikely that both diets prevent, revert metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. I think the key is to lower insulin and feel satisfied with your meals. Certainly, you can eat a high vegetable diet and still have low insulin. You can also eat a low vegetable diet and have low insulin. The question is which will you enjoy more and feel more satisfied with? that is a personal decision.
