How To Make Homemade Coffee Liqueur

First you want to crush those coffee beans. This will release their amazing flavour and the kitchen will smell amazing. You can either whazz them vet quickly in a grinder/food processor but only for seconds as you dont want to grind them completely.

Pop the smashed coffee beans into a nice big jar and add the lemon zest and pour on the vodka and rum.

Now seal the jar and set it aside in a dark cupboard for a week. This will give the coffee beans plenty of time to release that amazing flavour into the vodka.

After a week you will want to strain the coffee mixture through a double layer of kitchen paper or muslin. Why a double layer? Well, the coffee beans will have left tiny bits of fibre and shell in the vodka, there will also be tiny bits of lemon lurking in there.

Any bits however small will make your finished coffee liqueur cloudy. It wont affect the taste, just wont look great. So just have a wee bit of patience and let it slowly drip through the two layers of paper/muslin.

Now make the fabulous coffee syrup. Basically you are heating up strong espresso with sugar to thicken it into a syrup.

Add this to the strained coffee vodka and shake well. Finally, pour the liqueur into a sterilised bottle . Voila, you now have your own homemade Kahlua style coffee liqueur.

    Holiday Giving: Homemade Coffee Liqueur

When I was 13 years old, one of my parents friends gave them a bottle of homemade coffee liqueur. I remember my dad being particularly pleased with its arrival. His favorite way to eat it was to stream a generous pour over several scoops of vanilla ice cream. Once in a great while, hed let me have the tiniest taste. I though it was heaven. Ive always been some of a fiend for sweet, coffee-flavored things.

Last year, Molly posted a recipe for Coffee Vanilla Bean Liqueur and I took note. I never got around to making it then and this year I was committed to mixing up a batch.

Yesterday, I bought a bottle of inexpensive vodka and today, I spent ten minutes putting my batch of coffee liqueur together.

I combined 3 cups granulated white sugar with 2 cups water and heated until the sugar was dissolved. Next I added 3/4 cup instant espresso and whisked vigorously until it was fully dissolved. Once all the little grains of coffee are gone, remove the pot from the heat.

I split and scraped 3 vanilla beans and stirred the seeds into the sweetened coffee slurry. Finally, I added 3 cups vodka and whisked to combine.

I funneled the nascent coffee liqueur into a 1/2 gallon jar, dropped in the vanilla bean pods and capped it. I hear it needs to sit for at least three weeks, though four to six is even better. Ill be away for Christmas, but hope to crack the jar for a few friends on New Years Eve, which means Ive just squeaked under the wire as far as starting the batch goes.

Kahlúa is a rum and coffee liqueur that was originally produced in Mexico; an origin that explains the connection to the wide-brimmed Mexican hat. First made in 1936, for much of the latter part of the 20th century, Kahlúa was the only coffee liqueur stocked in many bars, and it was poured into countless popular mixed drinks. It became so well-known that the brand name is often used generically to refer to coffee liqueurs in general . Today, Kahlúa is owned by the liquor industry giant, Pernod Ricard, and multiple flavors are available. Kahlúa Original comes in different strengths, depending on where it’s sold; in the United States, it is 20 percent alcohol by volume . It doesn’t contain nuts but is not suitable for dairy-free, gluten-free, kosher, or vegan diets. A 1 1/2-ounce shot contains about 5 milligrams of caffeine, which is minimal compared to brewed coffee.
