Isnt Espresso Stronger Than Coffee

Isnt there as much caffeine in cappuccino as coffee? Usually, we imagine cappuccino and espresso being much stronger.

The taste is that much more intense, too.

At this point, youre probably wondering why espresso is considered stronger than drip coffee but has so much less caffeine.

Espresso is stronger than drip coffee, much stronger. Consider this:

  • One espresso shot is 1.5 ounces and contains 80 mg of caffeine
  • One cup of drip coffee is 8 ounces and contains 160 mg of caffeine

If you were to drink the same volume of cappuccino or espresso almost 5 shots to get to 8 total ounces, youd have consumed a whopping 400mg of caffeine.

The same volume of drip coffee gets you just 160mg. See the difference?

It also depends on the amount of coffee grounds that you use. If you were to use enough coffee grounds for just one shot of espresso and pulled 5 shots from it, youd have a very diluted beverage.

But if you pulled 5 shots from 5 servings of coffee grounds, youd get the 400mg of caffeine.

Cappuccino Vs Coffee Caffeine Content

Your typical 8 ounce cup of brewed coffee has 160mg of caffeine. A typical cappuccino as you saw above has about 80 mg of caffeine.

Its also important to consider the volume of coffee you are drinking. A 12 ounce cup of coffee has nearly 300mg of caffeine, whereas a 12 ounce cup of cappuccino made from two espresso shots has a caffeine content of around 160 mg.

How Much Caffeine In A Cappuccino

Its difficult to say exactly how much, but on average, a cappuccino made from a single shot of espresso has about 80mg of caffeine per serving.

Does that mean cappuccino is weaker than regular coffee?

Not exactly.

The reason there is such a large difference between the caffeine content of a cappuccino and of regular coffee is that regular coffee is 8 whole ounces of brewed coffee, whereas cappuccinos contain just a single espresso shot of 1.5 ounces.

Everything else is steamed milk.

If you were to have a cappuccino with a double shot of espresso, the caffeine total would be doubled, too, now reaching 160mg, comparable to a regular cup of brewed coffee.

How To Make Espresso From Instant Coffee

**Folgers half caff coffee** REVIEW.

If you enjoy espresso or simply want to make a strong black coffee for baked goods you can make something similar to espresso at home with instant coffee dissolved in a little hot water.

How to make one shot of espresso with instant coffee

Mix 1 2 heaped or level teaspoons of instant coffee with 30 ml/grams of hot water. If you find this too strong or weak increase or decrease the amount coffee, you use next time.

How to make a double espresso with instant coffee

Mix 2 3 teaspoons into 60 ml/grams hot water and like the single shot decrease or increase the amount of coffee you use to suit your tastes.

Admittedly using instant coffee is not going to give you a brewed coffee like you would get from a machine. But its a good alternative if you dont have a coffee machine, dont want to go out for coffee or want to save some money and still enjoy good coffee at home.

Now that you know how to make instant coffee taste better and how to make espresso with instant coffee, its time to show you how to make coffee shop coffee at home.

What About Cappuccino Calories

Cappuccino has more calories than drip coffee, period.

Theres just no doubt here and this is especially true if youre buying the stuff from fast food coffee chains.

Drip coffee is usually enjoyed black, in which case, youre looking at just 1-2 calories per 8 ounce cup!

If you decide to add one tablespoon of 2% milk and one teaspoon of sugar, youre looking at 25-26 calories per cup.

Note: If you tend to drink 16 ounce coffees, youll need to multiply the figures provided here accordingly.

Compare that with cappuccino: along with the espresso shot, which is 1-2 calories, youre adding 4 ounces or so of steamed milk, so the total calories comes out more to around 60 per single serving.

Most coffee shops wont serve you 6 ounce cappuccinos, though, as their sizes will be more like 10-12 ounces, in which case you can double to 60 calories straight to 120. Added sugar or syrups? PILE ON THE CALORIES!

Are calories necessarily bad? Of course not, if youre drinking and eating in moderation and have room for the calories, enjoy! But if youre watching your weight and food intake, you need to take this into consideration.

Switch milks. If you drink milky coffees like lattes, flat whites and cappuccinos, the type of milk you drink has a significant impact on its overall caloric content. For example, one cup of regular milk has 150 calories , one cup of skim has 90 calories , and one cup of almond milk only has about 30 calories .

Caffeine Content By Single Origin

Single Origin: Percentage

eg. if you use 10 grams of coffee , with 1.20% caffeine by weight, youll get roughly 120 mg of caffeine.

Note: caffeine is not necessarily 100% extracted via all brewing methods. For example, roughly twice as much caffeine is extracted by espresso brewing methods than by standard drip-brewing. This means you wont get 120mg of caffeine per 5.3 ounce brewed coffee.

These numbers may be correct for the coffee offered by Mountanos Bros. Coffee Co., but they probably are not neccessarily correct in a generic way. Caffeine will vary from farm to farm, and plant variety to plant variety, and even year to year.

When To Drink Instant

Don’t worry about reaching for that speedy cup of instant coffee on days when you need it. Are These Exact Figures

How Much Caffeine is in a Cup of Coffee?

In the section above, Ive mentioned that cappuccinos contain about 80mg of caffeine per serving and drip coffee contains about 160mg.

Are those exact figures? No way! Unfortunately, its difficult to say exactly how much caffeine there will be as there are a lot of other variables.

The most potent variable here is the kind of coffee bean youre using.

First off, arabica beans have less caffeine than robusta beans. Some coffee beans within the arabica or robusta family tend to have more caffeine than others, and some manufacturers even make high caffeine blends that have excessive amounts of caffeine in each serving.

If you were using these to make your cappuccino, youd have a lot more caffeine per cup.

To best judge how much caffeine is in your cappuccino or coffee, you should check the product label on your coffee beans. Some manufacturers do include numbers for how much caffeine youll get per serving.
