How To Make Iced Coffee With A Drip Coffee Machine

How to Make Instant Iced Coffee

Its super easy to make iced coffee at home with your drip coffee machine. Heres how:

Drip Coffee Machine Iced Coffee Recipe:

  • Add ice to your carafe
  • Brew your coffee as usual this may seem strong, but if youre not using coffee ice-cubes your coffee will be diluted by the ice so youll want to make it a little stronger than normal
  • Once your coffee is brewed pour over ice, if you had ice in the carafe its probably cool enough at this point that you wont need to worry about thermal shock
  • Add your favorite creamer/milk and sweeten

Helpful gear: The Ninja Coffee Bar has an Over Ice setting that measures the amount of coffee needed accounting for the ice in your mug which makes for a more flavorful iced coffee.

It also brews the coffee differently on that setting so that the hot coffee does not all come out in one steady stream, its released a little at a time so it doesnt melt the ice to the same extent as a traditional drip brew maker.

We received one as a review copy and I love that setting for a quick iced coffee. Its got different size options as well, so if Im heading out the door with a travel mug, I dont need to make a whole pot I choose that size setting and it makes just enough.

Instant Coffee Vs Cold Brew

When comparing instant coffee made with cold water to making your cold brew in the morning, the difference is the amount of time it takes to make each.

Instant coffee, as its name suggests, is practically instant. Its so popular that it accounts for one-third of global coffee consumption. While the powder dissolves faster in hot water, making instant coffee with cold water is nearly as fast. To make cold instant coffee in the morning, just follow these few steps:

  • Pour water into a glass or cup large enough for mixing with a small spoon
  • Add your instant coffee packet slowly to the water
  • OPTIONAL: Heat your spoon under hot water to speed up the dissolving process
  • Mix the powder into the cold water until it dissolves, resting occasionally
  • OPTIONAL: Get a second glass full of ice and pour the instant iced coffee on top
  • Otherwise, grab your glass or coffee tumbler full of cold instant coffee, and youre ready to go!
  • Enjoy!

Making instant coffee this way with cold water will take you anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the brand of instant coffee you choose, how fine the powder is, and how long it takes to dissolve fully. Remember to stir vigorously; nobody likes grainy coffee!

If you want cold brew in the morning, you would typically mix coarse ground coffee and water and let it sit overnight in the fridge, then use a french press or some other method to separate the grounds from the water so you dont have chunky cold brew see detailed cold brew prep steps here.;

Making Instant Iced Coffee

  • 1Mix 2 teaspoons of instant coffee with 12 cup of hot water. Heat the water in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stir the coffee and hot water together until the coffee granules are dissolved.XResearch source
  • Mix your coffee in the glass you want to drink from or in a separate cup. Just make sure the cup you use is microwaveable.
  • If youll pour the coffee over ice in a separate cup, microwave the water in a measuring cup or other vessel with a spout.
  • 2Stir sugar or spices into the warm mixture, if desired. If youre using sugar or spices, add them before the ice and cold water or milk. Sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and other ingredients will dissolve better in the warm mixture.XResearch source

You can also add flavored coffee creamer or syrup instead of sugar and spices.

  • 3Add 12 cup of cold water or milk to the warm mixture. For creamier iced coffee, use cold milk instead of water. Stir until everything is combined and evenly distributed.XResearch source
  • 4Pour your cold coffee over some ice. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes, and slowly pour your cold coffee over the ice.
  • If you made the coffee in the glass you want to drink from, just add ice to it.
  • 5Serve the instant iced coffee immediately. Sip your iced coffee straight from the glass or add a straw to it. Serve or drink it before all the ice melts and waters it down.Advertisement

How To Make The Perfect Cup Of Instant Coffee

Nigella is a professional cook who has written extensively about recipes and health benefits associated with food.

Start the day off right with the perfect cup of instant coffee.

Nothing is more relaxing than having a coffee break, and instant coffees take all the hard work out of making it.

My personal favourite instant coffee is Nescafe’s Alta Rica, which is an especially smooth blend of coffee granules resulting in a superb break-time drink. It’s not the cheapest you can buy, but you get what you pay for, and I prefer to have the perfect cup of coffee every time.

Instant coffees are ideal for busy housewives as they are so easy to make, especially when you are only making coffee for one or two people. Percolators, espressos, and other coffee machines are better used when making coffee for several people, or for people who drink several cups throughout the day.

I just like the one cup of coffee per day, mid-morning, although I have been known to have a second if I have the time.

Making instant coffee is not as simple as putting a teaspoon of coffee granules in a cup and adding boiling water. There are some tricks of the trade to make the best coffee, every time.

Fill the kettle with fresh tap water, each and every time.

The Taste Of Cold Water Instant Coffee

While hot instant coffee aficionados claim that instant coffee made with cold water is not as tasty, there is no actual reason for the flavor profile of instant coffee to be any different due to its temperature in your coffee cup.

If any flavor differences are detectable, the instant coffee flavor might even feel fresher when made with cool water instead of hot water. The hot water takes some of the flavors away from the instant coffee, making it milder as the steam evaporates from the hot beverage. In cold drinks, the instant coffee is simply dispersed throughout the water when mixed evenly.

Can I Use Any Brand Of Coffee

You bet! You can use your favorite brand. Myself, I prefer a decaf ,; Americano blend, but use whatever is your favorite. This recipe is meant to be used with decaf coffee and the concentrate will be very strong if you used regular caffeinated coffee. Youll want to be sure the grind is a normal grind, not course, and not fine. If the grind is too fine your concentrate will be too sludgey if that makes sense.

    How To Strain Cold Brew

Simple Cold Coffee with Instant Coffee!

The last step is to strain the mixture to remove the coffee grounds. Place a fine mesh strainer over a large batter bowl, liquid measuring cup or bowl. Its easiest if you strain the coffee into a container that is easy to pour from so that you can then transfer it to a storage container. I strain my coffee into this batter bowl.

To catch the coffee grounds, line the strainer with cheesecloth or place a nut milk bag inside. I prefer to use a nut milk bag because its inexpensive and I can rinse it out and reuse it again and again. If you fold the top of the bag over its easy to get the coffee grounds out and rinse the bag clean.

How To Make Iced Coffee With Instant Coffee

Many people avoid making iced coffee at home because they think it requires more work than hot coffee. Whereas they can use instant coffee to make a piping hot cup in just a few seconds, they assume they have to go through additional steps and preparation time to create iced coffee.

This is actually not true. You can use instant coffee mix to make iced coffee too. This recipe is so simple, in fact, that it only takes 2 minutes to make with 4 different ingredients. Check out this recipe if you want to make iced coffee with instant coffee mix. It will probably be a life changer and save you a whole lot of money!

How You Normally Make Instant Coffee

Before attempting to make instant coffee with cold water, it is important to first understand how to make regular instant coffee and how the cold water process is similar and different. To make instant coffee, you should do the following:

    • For one serving, mix two teaspoons of instant coffee powder with ½ cup water
    • Heat the water and coffee mixture in the microwave
    • Stir the coffee and water mixture until the coffee powder is dissolved
    • Pour the mix into a heat-safe glass
    • Enjoy!

The main difference between making instant coffee this way and with cold water is that it will take the instant coffee granules longer to dissolve in cold water, depending on which brand you choose. Instant coffee is not coffee grounds. It is actually coffee extract that has been brewed from regular coffee, dried, and ground into crystals. The molecular energy in hot water is what helps dissolve the crystals so quickly, but it is not necessary for the process. Once youre a pro at making regular instant coffee, it is time to venture on to making iced instant coffee the quick way, with cold water.

Tips To Make The Best Ever Homemade Cold Milk Coffee

To make the best ever homemade cold coffee, here are some tips!

Make sure to use the best quality, fresh coffee to make the best cold coffee.

Whether you use instant coffee powder or you use brewed coffee to make cold coffee, make sure to use the best quality coffee to make the cold coffee.

Make sure to use fresh, good quality full fat milk for best results.

Whether you use full fat whole milk or coffee creamer, half and half etc, make sure to use the best quality, fresh ones.

Sometimes I have noticed that not so fresh milk or cream can seriously ruin your entire cup of milk coffee or milk tea or anything you make with it.

Also milk is something that can spoil much faster, so make sure you are using fresh!

Another thing to keep in mind while you make this coffee is that, you can always adjust the amount of sugar to your preference. The amount of sweeteness is almost always the best when you decide for yourself based on your preferences.

Also the amount of milk is also the best when you add the amount based on your personal preference. So feel free to adjust the amount of sugar, creamer etc based on your preference if you want to make adjustments.

The amount of coffee powder used is also based on my preference. You may even slightly increase the amount of coffee if you want the flavor to be more strong.

Below you can get the recipe for cold milk coffee with instant coffee powder and milk in detail.

Tips To Make Perfect Cold Coffee

    Easy Instant Iced Coffee Recipe
    • Instant Coffee: Use your preferred instant coffee brand such as Nescafe or Bru. Instant coffee comes in finely ground or granulated form. Both of them work.
    • How strong? Add more instant coffee to 1.5 or 2 tablespoons if you prefer a stronger, slightly bitter taste in your cold coffee.
    • Foamy: If you want a foamy coffee, don’t blend the coffee for too long.
    • Adjust Sweetness: If you’re going to add ice cream, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce, reduce the amount of sugar in the coffee.
    • Cold Coffee with Ice-cream: Make your cold coffee creamier and indulgent with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on top or blend it in with the milk.

How Would I Serve My Coffee Concentrates

    So because its a concentrate, you will want to play a little bit with the ratio of concentrate to water. If you want a stronger cup of iced coffee, then use more concentrate than water.;

With my brew, I use about half water and half concentrate. Of course, if you make your iced coffee stronger, then youd use less water. Its all trial and error until you find the perfect ratio.

As for serving, I like to use a little bit of coffee cream and sugar in my iced coffees. But again, feel free to have them just as you wish.

If you do not have a blender, then simply make this in a mason jar or shaker bottle. Make the coffee mixture in the jar and then pour the chilled milk. Secure it and shake it for 1 to 2 minutes. Take care not to over do as you may end up with butter separated on top.

The other way is to simply make the coffee in your serving cup and then pour the chilled milk. Use a milk frother and froth it until you see some froth on top, typically for 1 minute.

What To Add In Your Instant Coffee

    We love drinking our instant coffees black to taste the true bold flavor, but we know some of you like to spice things up. Try adding dairy milk or alternative milk to your hot or cold instant coffee. If you like cappuccinos, froth your milk before pouring on top of the brewed instant coffee. You can even use a mason jar to froth your milk if you dont own an electric frother. If you love your instant coffee sweet, consider adding sugar or organic sugar substitutes.;

    Cold Brew Coffee Ratio

For every 1 cup of water you will want to use 1/4 cup of coffee. You can scale the recipe up to make as much cold brew as you want, so long as you stick to the ratio of 1/4 cup coffee per 1 cup of water.

I usually make my cold brew in quart size mason jars and 3 cups of water plus 3/4 cup coffee grounds fit perfectly in a jar.

You can use whole coffee beans and grind them yourself to a coarse grind or purchase ground coffee. Ive measured coffee beans both before and after grinding and the volume doesnt change much with grinding, so use 1/4 cup of coffee per 1 cup water either way.
