Swap Your Morning Coffee For Raw Cacao

You can brew raw cacao nibs to create an energy-boosting drink.

“Raw cacao is a recent discovery of mine and now a part of my daily morning routine,” Whipple shares. “I’ve recently swapped out my black coffee for this smooth, chocolatey tasting beverage.” Cacao is a nutrient-dense food, with high amounts of minerals, copper, iron, manganese and zinc.

Cacao also contains theobromine, a compound closely related to caffeine but which provides a smoother, crash-free boost of energy. Brewed the same way you would make coffee in a French press , the cacao helps you stay alert and awake without the unavoidable caffeine crash. Whipple is partial to Crio Bru available on Amazon.

What Statements Are Required On Caffeinated Energy Drinks As It Relates To Caffeine Content

In addition to a synthetic source of caffeine, natural sources, such as guarana and yerba mate, must be included in the content calculation. For single-serving containers, caffeine content will be declared on a per container basis whether or not the container is re-sealable. Containers up to 750 mL are considered as single-serving containers, whether or not they are re-sealable. In addition, a caffeinated energy drink that cannot be re-sealed will be treated as a single-serving container, regardless of container size.

For multi-serving containers, meaning a re-sealable container larger than 750 mL, caffeine content must be declared on a per serving basis of 500 mL. In addition all caffeinated energy drinks will be required to display the following statement on the product label:

  • “High caffeine content”*

*It is recommended that a consistent statement be used in describing the caffeine content. However, no objection will be taken if synonyms equivalent in meaning to the above statement are used .

Gastrointestinal And Metabolic Effects

Energy drinks usually contain large amounts of sugar ranging from 21 g to 34 g per oz. The sugar content is mainly in the form of sucrose, glucose or high fructose corn syrup. Therefore, high energy drink intake may increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. In addition, the high sugar content in energy drinks may reduce the activity, diversity and gene expression of intestinal bacteria resulting in increased risk of obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Acute caffeine intake decreases insulin sensitivity, which could explain the rise in blood glucose levels after energy drink consumption documented in some studies. Beaudoin et al. demonstrated that caffeine intake reduces insulin sensitivity in a dose dependent manner, with 5.8% increase in insulin for each mg/kg increase in caffeine.

A case has been reported of a woman that presented with jaundice, abdominal pain and highly elevated liver enzymes following energy drink overconsumption. Huang et al. reported the same finding in a 36-year-old man. Further studies are needed to determine, which individuals are highly susceptible and the underlying mechanism by which energy drinks cause hepatic injury.

What Are The Rules Around Allergen Labelling And These Products

Caffeinated energy drinks must be compliant with current allergen labelling regulations as per Section B.01.010 of the Food and Drug Regulations . However, published amendments to the FDR that took place in February 2011 will further strengthen the labelling requirements for pre-packaged foods containing substances most frequently associated with food allergies and food intolerances. As of August 4, 2012, these enhanced labelling requirements for priority allergens, gluten sources, and added sulphites will be in force for pre-packaged products regulated as food, with the exception of standardized beers. Some caffeinated energy drinks may contain certain ingredients such as whey protein, soy or cream, which could trigger the new allergen, gluten, or sulphite labelling requirements.

Accordingly:

Food manufacturers are also urged to comply with Health Canada’s policy with regard to precautionary labelling where consumers may need to be warned due to the inadvertent presence of allergens, gluten source or sulphites through cross-contamination.

Should Health Canada identify a significant health risk with respect to the undeclared presence of priority food allergens, added sulphites or gluten sources in a pre-packaged caffeinated energy drink, whether label transition has occurred or not, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will take appropriate enforcement action, which may include recall of the product.

Ingredients In This Homemade Energy Drink:

Each of these ingredients were chosen because theyre beneficial for energy and nutrition:

  • Unsweetened Green Tea:

I started drinking green tea a few years ago after hearing about some of its health benefits. The nutrients in green tea are anti-inflammatory and provide antioxidants. There is caffeine in green tea, but nothing like the levels in store bought energy drinks that tend to make a lot of people jittery or shaky.

You can easily make your own green tea, but its ok to buy store bought too. Youre going to want to check the label to make sure the tea doesnt contain anything other than green teaI like using Pure Leaf brand unsweetened green tea when I dont have time to make my own.

  • Watermelon: Super hydrating and contains vitamins C & A. Watermelon also helps post-workout because it could help relieve muscle soreness and lower inflammation in your body. Watermelon also contains amino acids that help improve circulation.
  • Cherry: Contains natural sugars that dont cause spikes in blood pressure. Cherries are also anti-inflammatory.
  • Lime: Limes have anti-inflammatory properties and contain magnesium, which your body needs for energy production.
  • Honey: Honey is a natural sweetener, and it provides a bit of sweetness for our energy drink as well as some slow burning energy.

    Neurological And Psychological Effect

Individuals usually develop symptoms of caffeine intoxication in doses equal to or above 200 mg. Symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, muscle twitching, restlessness, and periods of inexhaustibility. In addition, High caffeine intake is associated with acute and chronic daily headaches by stimulating a pro-nociceptive state of cortical hyperexcitability. Four caffeine-induced psychiatric disorders have been recognized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition: Including caffeine intoxication, caffeine-induced anxiety, caffeine-induced sleep disorder and caffeine related disorder. A study of adolescents between 15- and 16-years-of age demonstrated a strong correlation between caffeine intake and violent behavior as well as conduct disorders. Several reports have suggested that energy drink may contribute to ischemic stroke and lead to epileptic seizures. Hallucinations might be observed in individuals that consume more than 300 mg of caffeine per day. High levels of cortisol that follow caffeine intake could explain this. Cortisol enhances the physiological effects of stress resulting in a greater tendency for the subjects to hallucinate.

In vitro studies found that a combination of caffeine, taurine and guarana may promote and enhance apoptosis by reducing both superoxide dismutase and catalase activities on human neuronal SH-SY5Y cells.

What About Drinks Like Four Loko That Are A Pre

Because of some serious intoxication incidents involving these drinks, several states and college campuses have banned alcoholic energy drinks like Four Loko and Joose. Like non-alcoholic energy drinks, its important to have an accurate understanding of whats in these drinks:

    • Most 23.5-ounce cans of Four Loko are 12% alcohol, which is the equivalent of 4-6 beers. A 23.5-ounce can of Joose contains 10-12% alcohol.
    • Four Loko has 135 milligrams of caffeine per 23.5-ounce can, and a can of Joose has 54 milligrams of caffeine. By comparison, an 8.3-ounce can of Red Bull has 76 milligrams, 8-ounces of Starbucks coffee has 180 milligrams, and a 12-ounce Coke has 35 milligrams.
    • Four Loko also contains guarana, but its unclear how much is in the drink. Phusion Projects, the maker of Four Loko, does not publish information about the amount of guarana in the drink.
    • Unlike non-alcoholic energy drinks, alcoholic energy drinks do not have to print nutrition facts on the can, so you have much less information about what youre drinking.

What Other Flavors Can I Make

Are there any energy drinks without tons of niacin ...

SO many! The possibilities are literally endless. Let me share a few of my favorite ingredients to mix into these:

    • lime and lemon juice: help with hydration and provide magnesium to help make energy. Lemons are considered to be an alkaline forming food, and they help your body heal. Even adding a lemon slice to your energy drink will help with this!
    • berries: theyre rich in antioxidants and provide natural energy because of the sugars.
    • pineapple: pineapple is very anti-inflammatory.
    • ginger: is anti-inflammatory. Ginger also helps speed up recovery and reduces muscle pain and soreness.

You can use this juice mixture to make homemade electrolyte and hydration drinks, as well! Ive written up an entire post about why you might want to use them but know that its as simple as adding coconut water instead of green tea.
