Can You Drink Coffee With Intermittent Fasting

No Black Coffee Wont Break Your Fast

Does Coffee Break A Fast? [Can You Drink Coffee While Intermittent Fasting?]

The key with fasting is calorie count. As long as food or drink doesnt have calories, it wont break your fast.

That means black coffee is fine to pair with intermittent fasting. Technically it has about 4 calories per cup, due to natural oils and amino acids in the coffee beans but 4 calories is not enough to impact your fasted state.

That said, many coffee additions will break your fast. Milk, cream, collagen protein, sugar, creamer anything with calories will take your body out of fasting mode.

But as long as you drink it black , a morning cup of joe wont interfere with your fasting window. In fact, it may enhance some of the benefits of fasting.

Is Intermittent Fasting Safe

People can begin intermittent fasting for a variety of reasons. Some may begin to lose and manage weight and while others may be using intermittent fasting to address other health issues that could use a change in diet.

Regardless of reasoning, anyone planning to begin IF should consult and receive approval from their primary care doctor. If youre pregnant, breastfeeding, or have medical problems like, intermittent fasting may not be right for you.

If you begin intermittent fasting and experience unusual headaches, mental health disturbances such as anxiety or depression or have unusual changes in mood, consult with your primary healthcare provider to determine the best strategy or plan for your individual wellness.

Intermittent fasting is not for everyone. Even if intermittent fasting is safe for you, it might not be the right diet for you.

If you find that IF makes you feel good and supports your health journey, thats wonderful! Youre joining a large community of fasters who have also found that IF enriches their life. If you find that intermittent fasting triggers disordered eating habits, makes you feel icky, or otherwise isnt the best option for your nutritional needs, thats OK too! There is no one size fits all approach to health.

Side Effects Of Flavored Coffee While Intermittent Fasting

Whatever type of coffee youre drinking, you need to remember it is a stimulant. The goal of fasting is to allow your body and your digestive tract to rest. Stimulating it too much isnt recommended, so try to drink at most 1-2 cups during a fast.

Coffee and flavored coffee especially can also stimulate the digestive tract. For some, that might be a good thing for others, it may result in issues such as diarrhea or bloating.

After suppressing your appetite and your sweet tooth for a while, flavored coffee might actually make you feel hungrier. After all, the flavors will make your brain think of various foods and they may also tell it to expect some energy, carbs, as it normally would happen if you were eating those foods. Since the drink has no calories or carbs, you may soon find yourself with more cravings than before.

Theres also another issue. Some people warn that the coffee beans used in flavored coffee arent always of the best quality. The logic is fairly simple. Good quality coffee beans are sold without any flavor enhancements because they taste amazing on their own. Low quality coffee beans can benefit from a lengthier process and even natural flavors. While this wont immediately hurt your health, it might not be the type of coffee you want to drink long-term.

Beckys Glucose Results: Equal

Her blood glucose was at 94 mg/dL, it went up to 105 mg/dL at 30 minutes, then back to 94 mg/dL at 60 minutes, and up to 103 mg/dL at 120 minutes.

It kind of went back and forth a couple of times over the test in both your ketones and glucose.

When we look at my results for Equal, they are actually very similar to my results for sugar.

Yes. Your blood glucose definitely went up a little bit, and your ketones came down a little bit.

Nothing significant happened, I didnt really benefit from it.

As far asyour ketones go:

Using Coffee Creamer While Fasting, Here

My glucose started at 94 mg/dL, it went up a little bit to 99 mg/dL at 30 minutes, it went down a little bit to 89 mg/dL at 60 minutes, and then at the 120 mark I was at 93 mg/dL.

Almost the same glucose as I started with.

Again, I did not seem to have a big glucose change with this, but it did drop me out of ketosis.

Overall, the results of our stevia test were not major numbers. They were kind of major for me, but not major in the long run.

However, if we compare that to my findings with just black coffee, the black coffee did not do anything to my ketones.

So, that is kind of a thing, but it is especially interesting when you look at black coffees effect on my glucose.

My blood glucose dropped 29 points with only black coffee and nothing else over a two-hour period.

So again, if you just look at this data, it does not seem to have done too much, right?

However, when we compare our results from black coffee with stevia to our results from black coffee by itself, I had a better ketone response with black coffee alone.

You had a better glucose response from coffee alone.

Benefits Of Bulletproof Coffee

Besides helping to fill you up and stay in ketosis, Bulletproof Coffee delivers some big benefits:

  • Suppresses your hunger hormones: When youre in ketosis, your body burns fat for fuel and produces ketones. Ketones suppress ghrelin, your hunger hormone, and increase cholecystokinin , which can make you feel full.
  • Stabilizes blood sugar: Carbs and protein require insulin in order to be metabolized. If you drink coffee with milk and sweeteners first thing in the morning, it will cause your insulin to spike. After the spike, your blood sugar will fall, leaving you dragging before lunchtime. Eating mostly fats, like those you get in Bulletproof Coffee, keeps insulin levels low and stable.
  • Helps you produce more ketones, faster: Bulletproof Coffee also contains Brain Octane C8 MCT Oil. This high-quality MCT oil gives you quick energy and helps your body produce four times more ketones than coconut oil alone.
  • Boosts your workout results: Researchers have found that when your mTOR levels are suppressed, they bounce back up, which triggers muscle-building activity. Intermittent fasting, exercise and coffee all suppress mTOR. When you combine all three, you may see more muscle-building results from your workouts.
  • Cranks up your metabolism: Coffee speeds up your metabolism, and a faster metabolism helps you burn more calories and sustain more energy throughout the day. How? Coffees thermogenic effects create more heat in your body.

Her glucose was about the same.

    She started at 84 mg/dL, went to 89 mg/dL at 30 minutes, and back to 82 mg/dL at 60 minutes, and finally 85 mg/dL at 120 minutes.

So she stayed almost exactly the same from the zero minute mark to the 120-minute mark.

Right, so you would think that stevia did not have any effect on me, and that would be one interpretation until you compare it to my black coffee results.

We had earlier tested my glucose and ketones with just black coffee alone with nothing mixed into it

When we did that, my glucose pretty much remained the same. It started at 74 mg/dL and ended at 74 mg/dL.

However, my ketones with just black coffee went from 1.2 mmol/L up to 2.1 mmol/L.

Right. So that means that the stevia kept your ketones from going up?

Yeah that is a possibility, right?

It may have blunted my ability to produce ketones, but who knows. Its one persons results.

Lets look at what your results showed for stevia.

    Caffeine And Sleep Disturbance

Intermittent fasting improves the quality of your sleep, yet too much coffee can interfere with this. Doctors suggest limiting your coffee consumption to 4 cups per day. If youre sensitive to caffeine, avoid drinking coffee in the afternoon and evening. The general rule of thumb is to keep a space of six hours between your last dose of caffeine and the time you go to sleep for the night.

Sleep is crucial, and if you get too little sleep youll feel miserable, and it will reduce the impact of your intermittent fasting regimen, which could cause you to gain weight.

So for my ketones, I actually started at 0.8 mmol/L that morning.

I was super excited, and then I realized that I had to drink coffee with dextrose, maltodextrin, and aspartame in it.

At 30 minutes I dropped to 0.5 mmol/L, then I dropped to 0.4 mmol/L at 60 minutes. So I was technically out of ketosis at that point.

Then 120 minutes I popped back up to 0.6 mmol/L.

So, that was kind of interesting.

    Drinks To Avoid While Fasting

Because of the massive amount of sugar that Americans eat on average, many people have become dependent on glucose for energy. When you eat a lot of sugar and that sugar isn’t utilized for energy, your body breaks it down and eventually stores it as body fat, per UC Berkeley. In addition, the refined sugar found in most beverages digests quickly, spiking both your blood sugar and your insulin levels.

Sugar is also addictive. Indeed, a July 2013 review in Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care found that sugar and sweetened beverages and foods induce reward and craving responses in the brain that are comparable to the responses triggered by addictive drugs, which continue the cycle.

As a result, it’s best to avoid sugary drinks that can break a fast, including:

    • Soda
    • Kombucha

The Final Word On Intermittent Fasting And Drinking Coffee

Black coffee can be enjoyed while fasting, just stick to a modest amount, says Leigh Merotto, RD, a Toronto-based registered dietitian with a focus on metabolic health, digestion/gut health, and sports nutrition. Too much caffeine can cause poor sleep and irritability, especially if consumed on an empty stomach.

Does Bulletproof Coffee Break My Fast

Before I answer this question, let me explain what bulletproof coffee is. .

Many in the keto community add healthy fats like coconut oil, MCT oil, and grass-fed butter to coffee to increase fat loss on a ketogenic diet.

While this is a whole other controversial topic in itself since some say bulletproof coffee has too much fat, BPC can be one of the best ways to sneak healthy fats into a keto meal plan. We teach this tactic to Keto Challengers since this is important if youre not able to eat enough fat to trigger ketosis.

Far too many women come into the challenge because theyre stuck in a weight loss stall. Fasting too much to get enough fat to trigger ketosis is sometimes the culprit. Adding an intermittent fasting routine before you are fat adapted is another big problem.

This is why bulletproof coffee is on the menu for some challengers. BPC doesnt stop at just coffee either. Many people add healthy fats to green tea, herbal teas, or even bone broth to ensure a healthy fat boost throughout the day.

While I do believe BPC can have beneficial effects for some people looking to lose weight on a ketogenic diet, I recommend sticking with plain black coffee during the fasting window. Save the health benefits that come along with bulletproof coffee for your eating window.

Types Of Intermittent Fasting For Beginners

People are individual. So is intermittent fasting.

From a colorful variety of methods, I have summarized those that are very well known.

Accordingly, different methods also have individual advantages and disadvantages, which we will dive into together.

From the following methods, you should choose the one that fits best into your daily routine. Finally, intermittent fasting should not become an additional stress factor.

Because of its simple rules, which you can tailor to your daily routine, beginners achieve the best results with 16/8 intermittent fasting.

    16/8 Intermittent Fasting

Classic 16/8 fasting is also called Peak Fasting or Lean Gains Method because it allows you to gain lean mass while losing body fat.

In this method, you eat between 12 and 8 pm, for example. Therefore, your body can fast for 16 hours with an 8-hour eating period in between. Since you sleep 8 of the 16 fasting hours, classic intermittent fasting is easier than you might think.

Although you can start with fewer fasting hours with this method, 16 hours has proven effective since some health benefits for longevity dont kick in until after 14 hours.

Since it is simply unnecessary due to the high energy level in the morning , it is easiest for most people to skip breakfast at 16/8.

Nonetheless, forgoing dinner has also proven successful for some people.

    • Fasting period: 16 hours

    Crescendo Method

The Crescendo Method is a milder form of 16/8 Intermittent Fasting.

    One Meal A Day

    • Fasting period: 23 hours

‘can I Drink Coffee While Fasting’

I heard the same question almost every time I gave pre-op instructions to a patient: Once I got to the part about nothing to eat or drink after , nearly every one of them would look at me in anguish and ask, Does that mean no coffee??

    I feel you.

As a connoisseur of caffeine, myself, I understand that fasting can be difficult enough without giving up coffee to do it. And the good news is: sometimes you dont have to!

The answer to this question depends on the type of fasting youre doing. Can you drink coffee while doing

Pre-surgical fasting? No, you absolutely may not drink coffee after the cut-off time youre given. Thats because the medications used in general anesthesia make it easy for stomach contents to regurgitate into the esophagus, where they can be inhaled. Not good. So, you should never eat or drink anything for several hours prior to a surgery with general anesthesia.

Intermittent fasting? Yes, you can drink black coffee if youre doing intermittent fasting . IF is based on a concept called time-restricted feeding in which you take in calories only during a small window of time each day. But black coffee does not contain calories, so drinking it wont break your fast. Now, if you add cream or sugar, then youve blown your fast because those things contain calories.
