The answer to the question of whether decaf coffee is as good as regular coffee is simultaneously complex and simple. The very simple answer is: yes, it can be.
Through all methods of decaffeination, the coffee beans will lose some flavor. This is simply due to the fact that its a multistep process that involves removing and re-adding the flavor into the beans.
The first step to finding a decaf coffee that tastes as good as the medium or dark roast caffeinated blend youre used to is finding quality decaf beans. As weve mentioned six thousand times already, this starts with arabica beans that have been decaffeinated using the swiss water process.
With more businesses switching to Swiss Water Processed decaf, it is nearly impossible to distinguish decaf from regular coffee. Well, aside from the lack of caffeine.
Since the swiss water process is all natural and only involves using water in order to create the decaffeinated coffee beans, it is the least likely culprit to creating dull, flavorless decaf.
Next up, find yourself a roaster who cares about the quality of decaf arabica beans theyre importing. Specialty coffee roasters who focus on fair trade practices and create both single origin and blends of coffees are usually a safe bet. In order to really get the most out of any kind of coffee, you must use the freshly-ground beans immediately, as the freshness and flavor profile diminishes rapidly.
Nespresso capsules may use high quality grind and the pressure of the brew may be up to the standard required for espresso but the freshness of the grind leaves a lot of room for improvement in the taste department and I even think the staleness of the grind inside the capsules negatively effects the crema produced as well.

So, while you can certainly get a top-notch shot of espresso from a Nespresso machine, it will always fall short of the silky and eye-opening complexity of freshly-ground, freshly-extracted espresso made in the traditional mode.

What About Nespresso Compatible Capsules Intensity Ratings
Some of the Nespresso compatible capsules we have been reviewing do publish an intensity rating for their coffee. If so, you can find it in the specific review, as with any original Nespresso pods.
Whether this rating means the same as the Nespresso ones it is not known. Most capsules have a different scale anyway, Caffé Vergnano has a 1 to 5 scale that definitely doesnt match Nespressos.
Dont judge then an intensity rating in absolute terms, comparing different brands capsules with each other. A 5 rated capsule of a company can mean extremely intense for them but on the weak side for another company. The various ratings cannot be compared with each other, only within the same brand.
The clearest definition remains the one of the SCAs: how many solids are present in your cup of coffee. It doesnt help much a consumer though, and what you feel its more intense may not be intense for your barista at all.

An obvious place to start our conversation about the quality of espresso you can get from a Nespresso machine is to consider whether Nespresso coffee is actually real espresso in the first place! But before we can even get that far, we should clear up some misconceptions about what traditional espresso is and isnt.
How To Reset Your Machine
To consistently get a great taste from your compatible Nespresso® pods, you should ensure the amount of water in the cup is not too much or too little otherwise the taste can be too weak or too strong.
A Nespresso® machine will default to produce an espresso at 40ml and a lungo at 110ml.
