How Do They Make Decaf Coffee

Despite how simple coffee beans appear, they are quite complex when you break them down. There is an exact science behind the magical elixir we drink every day, the perfect concoction of chemicals that exhibit the aroma and flavors we all enjoy.

It is extremely easy to alter the original concentration of chemicals within the bean which inadvertently manipulates the flavor, usually for the worse. This makes the decaffeination process difficult. Many people claim that the decaffeination process causes the bean to become bland and lose most of its flavor.

There are 4 main methods used for making decaf coffee. One was proven deadly, one is still used but consists of using unhealthy chemicals , one is incredibly expensive and the final method is the answer and what we use!

Although this may have been true in the past, it is not the case anymore. We have engineered the process in a way that makes it nearly impossible to detect the difference between a regular and a decaffeinated bean from the same source.

Still, there are many decaffeination methods being used, some of which are better than others. Some of which are healthier than others. You may be shocked to learn that places like Dunkin Donuts are using less desirable methods because they are more profitable.

So, lets break down the methods!

Best Nespresso pods Ive tried – the White Rhino signature blend. nice that they are biodegradable too

I love my Nespresso, but I dont like that I cant get organic coffee. A quick Google search landed me at Artizan Coffee Co. And I placed an order. So far very happy with all the different varieties ive tried. My favorite so far is the White Rhino, and I also like Columbia. Excellent, and pleasantly pleased!

So much better than the Nepresso brand pods! I will continue to order from you! Peru, Guatemala and Colombia are my favorites!

Came across this brand while looking for a good Nespresso compatible pod. Ive tried many different compatibles, Ive been disappointed many times. I was intrigued by the name as I grew up in Miami and love authentic café cubano. In short, I was delighted with this coffee. It has all the familiar flavors a great café cubano! Intense and rich roasted flavor, tastes very freshly roasted and delicious. The fact that its all organic knocks this out of the ball park for me. Just ordered more, this has become the go to coffee at my house.

Is Decaf Coffee As Good As Regular Coffee

Nespresso VertuoPlus Coffee and Espresso Machine Bundle by ...

The answer to the question of whether decaf coffee is as good as regular coffee is simultaneously complex and simple. The very simple answer is: yes, it can be.

Through all methods of decaffeination, the coffee beans will lose some flavor. This is simply due to the fact that its a multistep process that involves removing and re-adding the flavor into the beans.

The first step to finding a decaf coffee that tastes as good as the medium or dark roast caffeinated blend youre used to is finding quality decaf beans. As weve mentioned six thousand times already, this starts with arabica beans that have been decaffeinated using the swiss water process.

With more businesses switching to Swiss Water Processed decaf, it is nearly impossible to distinguish decaf from regular coffee. Well, aside from the lack of caffeine.

Since the swiss water process is all natural and only involves using water in order to create the decaffeinated coffee beans, it is the least likely culprit to creating dull, flavorless decaf.

Next up, find yourself a roaster who cares about the quality of decaf arabica beans theyre importing. Specialty coffee roasters who focus on fair trade practices and create both single origin and blends of coffees are usually a safe bet. These guys are focused on creating a high quality product for their customers, including their decaf options.

How Does Nespressos Brewing Method Compare

Nespresso brewers use a proprietary design to mimic the coffee extraction process of traditional espresso machines, but with some crucial differences. Most obviously, while a standard espresso maker requires the use of a portafilter to hold the coffee and bring it into contact with the hot water, a Nespresso machine uses capsules with pre-ground, pre-dosed coffee.

Once you insert the capsule into the Nespresso machines chamber and close the lid, a group of needles puncture the capsule, allowing pressurized water to be forced through the ground coffee, extracting your espresso shot.

Where To Buy Nespresso Vertuoline Coffee Pods/capsules

In my opinion, is the best place to buy Nespresso Vertuoline pods. Here are five reasons why:

  • CONFIDENCE: You can shop with confidence on Amazon because it is an authorized seller.
  • SUSTAINABILITY: Nespresso provides different options for recycling your used aluminum coffee pods, but youll need a recycling bag for your used Nespresso pods or be able to visit a Nespresso store near you to recycle them.
  • PRICE: The price per Nespresso Vertuo pod on Amazon is mostly lower than when you buy direct from
  • SHIPPING: Amazon provides free two-day shipping on your Nespresso Vertuo pods order if you are an Amazon Prime member.
  • SELECTION: Amazon carries popular Nespresso Vertuo pod variety packs and popular Nespresso Vertuo compatible pods from Nespresso partners like Starbucks. They are great if you want to try lots of different flavors.

Amazon doesnt carry all of their flavors, and some pods are exclusive to Nespresso stores and, so that a Nespresso store may be the best option for you. You can also check other places where they can be purchased if needed.

Is Nespresso Worth It Really

Nespresso machines are worth it if you wish to have great tasting espresso without the going through effort and learning curve involved in pulling a shot. If youre willing to take the time to learn and brew espresso manually, then you can save some money by opting for a regular espresso machine instead.

The best way to help you figure this out is to explore the pros and cons of Nespresso machines and that should help you make an informed decision. As youll see, the answer is not quite black and white.

Flavor And Texture Comparison: Espresso Vs Nespresso

Grind Nespresso Pods REVIEW & UNBOXING | An Organic compostable coffee pod but do they taste good?

Theres just no way around it: while a shot of espresso from your Nespresso machine is going to be satisfying and delicious, it simply cant quite measure up to the intense, complex, and multi-faceted flavors of a traditionally-pulled shot of espresso.

Why would this be?

More than any other factor, the freshness of the coffee itself is to blame. Despite the valiant efforts of Nespresso and other coffee capsule producers, there is just no way to lock in coffees freshness after it has been ground. In order to really get the most out of any kind of coffee, you must use the freshly-ground beans immediately, as the freshness and flavor profile diminishes rapidly.

Nespresso capsules may use high quality grind and the pressure of the brew may be up to the standard required for espresso but the freshness of the grind leaves a lot of room for improvement in the taste department and I even think the staleness of the grind inside the capsules negatively effects the crema produced as well.

See this for more on what makes good crema in espresso.

So, while you can certainly get a top-notch shot of espresso from a Nespresso machine, it will always fall short of the silky and eye-opening complexity of freshly-ground, freshly-extracted espresso made in the traditional mode.

What About Nespresso Compatible Capsules Intensity Ratings

Some of the Nespresso compatible capsules we have been reviewing do publish an intensity rating for their coffee. If so, you can find it in the specific review, as with any original Nespresso pods.

Whether this rating means the same as the Nespresso ones it is not known. Most capsules have a different scale anyway, Caffé Vergnano has a 1 to 5 scale that definitely doesnt match Nespressos.

Dont judge then an intensity rating in absolute terms, comparing different brands capsules with each other. A 5 rated capsule of a company can mean extremely intense for them but on the weak side for another company. The various ratings cannot be compared with each other, only within the same brand.

The clearest definition remains the one of the SCAs: how many solids are present in your cup of coffee. It doesnt help much a consumer though, and what you feel its more intense may not be intense for your barista at all.

What do you think defines an intense coffee? Do you agree with the SCA or Nespressos definition? What do you think its the most intense coffee capsule?

Unfortunately, there isnt a single, simple answer that is correct in all cases. Nespresso Pods And The Environment: Are They Bad

Much has been said about Nespresso® pods, compatible capsules and the environment, and theres no doubt that throwing a pile of aluminium capsules in landfill is no good for the planet.

Which is why we recommend using recyclable plastic pods. Compared to other materials, the production of a compatible Nespresso® pod made of polyethylene a plastic material that is often used for food packaging has less impact on the environment and can be easily recycled.

Simply open the pod through the foil at the bottom, then empty the coffee remains into your food recycling bin or onto a compost heap. Then just add the empty pod to your household plastic recycling. Simple!

Its worth highlighting that using coffee capsules in a smaller household or for a single cup of coffee may be a more environmentally-friendly alternative to making a pot of filter coffee. This is because it is quite difficult to brew the right amount of filter coffee in the traditional way for just one cup. Using pods means less energy is wasted and less coffee is thrown away.

Real Coffee says…

All our pods are made of polyethylene, meaning they are completely recyclable. You can read more aboutReal Coffee and the Environmenton our dedicated page. We are working to develop a capsule that consists of 100% compostable material, but we have not yet found the right material and quality that ensures 100% compatibility with all Nespresso® machines.

How To Make Espresso At Home

For full ingredients and instructions, scroll down to the recipe.

  • Fill and tamp your portafilter with finely ground coffee.
  • Pull 1-2 shots of espresso.Serve and drink immediately.
  • BARISTAS TIP: Getting a great shot of espresso takes a lot of practice. What you want to look for is crema, the light brown froth that sits on top of the liquid. The crema gives espresso more flavor and indicates a good shot. Freshly roasted coffee beans will have lots of gas, so the crema will be very thicker than older coffee beans.

    • RICH, 5-FLAVOR VARIETY PACK Contains four delicious blends
    • PREMIUM Arabica coffee from Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia
    • COMPATIBLE with all Nespresso Original Line machines: NOT
    • FITS Essenza, Pixie, Inissia, Citiz, U, Lattissima,

Our next pick is the variety pack by Carter Phillip containing 5 variations which include 4 caffeinated and 1 decaf variant. If in a family, there are people with mixed choices, this pack can be great as it contains both the decaf and non-decaf capsules.

The beans used are 100% Arabica and are sourced from Colombia, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, and Tanzania and its tags with Artisan roasting that claims for its perfect taste results. It comes in environment-friendly recyclable shells that make it a guilt-free product. The price will cost a lot less as compared with Nespresso.

But First An Ode To Nespresso

Nespresso machines have been around for quite a while, actually. So, how could the company get away with preventing third-party coffee capsules for so long? We cant say for certain, but we do have a hunch: the Nespresso brand coffee capsules are amazing. Indeed, perhaps the reason Nespresso has avoided pushback from would-be third-party coffee companies for so long is that Nespresso customers have been perfectly fine to keep buying Nespresso capsules!

Its easy to see why. Not only does Nespresso produce a huge variety of capsule options in every flavor, intensity, and regional origin, but it seems every single one of those options produces a top-quality brew!

And yet, theres something to be said for promoting a competitive marketeven when it comes to Nespresso coffee capsules. So, lets move on to the real topic of this article: using other pods in your Nespresso machine.

    The Benefits Of Organic Coffee

Better for yourself and the environment.

Organic is certainly a buzz word these days, but for good reason organic produce is better for both yourself and the environment. Organic coffee in particular, because regular coffee is one of the most heavily chemically-treated foods in the world.

Organic coffee is richer in antioxidants.

While the taste isnt necessarily better than regular non-organic coffee, by using compatible Nespresso® pods filled with organic coffee, you are not ingesting potentially harmful chemicals that have been absorbed by the beans from the use of synthetic additives or fertilizer. It has also been found that organic coffee is richer in antioxidants than regular coffee, which can only be a good thing.

Meanwhile, organic coffee is generally better for the environment. This is because there is no use of chemicals that can affect the local habitat and harm the people who live on and near the coffee farms.

    Is Nespresso Real Espresso

An obvious place to start our conversation about the quality of espresso you can get from a Nespresso machine is to consider whether Nespresso coffee is actually real espresso in the first place! But before we can even get that far, we should clear up some misconceptions about what traditional espresso is and isnt.

    How To Reset Your Machine

To consistently get a great taste from your compatible Nespresso® pods, you should ensure the amount of water in the cup is not too much or too little otherwise the taste can be too weak or too strong.

A Nespresso® machine will default to produce an espresso at 40ml and a lungo at 110ml.

    Real Coffee says…

For a look at setting the correct water amount for a wide range of Nespresso® machines, check out our complete guide to cup size programming.

    Top Tip!

We recommend an espresso size of 40ml, with a lungo of 100ml . If you prefer your coffee extra strong, adjust the size of your espresso to 30ml and your lungo to 80ml.
