Unlike the usual coffee beans, the beans used to extract espresso are rich in nutrients like potassium and magnesium. They are also packed with other essentials such as antioxidants as well as fats and oils that are beneficial for the body. I think every barista can include a similar dialogue in their CV. And many of them feel obliged to explain that this is not true! This is a myth. Espresso is not strong. What is strong is pour-over coffee, sir.
So how is that, in the end? How much caffeine is in espresso? Much? A little? In my opinion the belief that espresso has more or less a superhero strength comes from the fact that this is an extremely concentrated brew. Almost ten times more than a pour-over coffee and for that reason, its taste is very intense. In other words, in espresso there is almost ten times more coffee than in drip coffee or AeroPress.
An average caffeine content in seven espressos amounted to 110mg/ 100ml.
The rounded result equals 44 milligrams in a portion.
We can conclude from these tests that caffeine content in espresso was higher than in pour-over coffees. However, at the same time the amount of caffeine we consumed was much higher in pour-overs than in espressos. Simply because an espresso is smaller than a drip. A piece of cake!

How To Brew Great Coffee Every Time
Coffee is such a universal and versatile drink that there are really plenty of ways to brew coffee, but a few elements will always remain the same.
Aside from using the correct amount of coffee, you can consider these the laws of coffee brewing:
- Use freshly roasted beans. I cant repeat this enough times. Once youve tasted coffee made from freshly roasted beans, youll never be able to drink pre-packaged supermarket coffee again.
- Grind freshly roasted beans just before brewing. Grinding just before brewing ensures that most of the flavors remain trapped in the coffee bean, only exposing them just before you brew. Once you grind coffee beans, they lose most of their flavor in a very short time. Use an automatic or manual burr grinder to get your ground coffee.
- Use the correct water temperature. If your water is too hot, you risk burning your coffee. If its too cold, you wont get enough flavor extraction. You need to brew at the perfect temperature which is around 90 to 95 degrees C.
My Espressos Stream Is Uneven
Water will always follow the path of least resistance through the portafilter. If the puck isnt level or is seated improperly, water will flow unevenly through the puck. To address this:
- Ensure even distribution AND
- Ensure your tamp is level

A double espresso in this already legendary Polish coffee shop has been made from the popular speciality coffee grounds from the Rainha farm in Brazil. Like I expected, it has a dominant nutty flavour, accompanied by an almond paste flavour and a subtle acidity. By the way, this is a good way of starting your adventure with high quality espresso.

As another example, consider the PRO 2 brew cylinder and its 60ml maximum volumetric yield. Because the density of coffee is very close to water, we can assume that 60ml roughly weighs 60 grams. So, if you use a typical dose of 20 grams of coffee in your PRO 2 portafilter, fill the cylinder completely with brew water, and lower the lever all the way, youll yield roughly 60 grams of coffee, making a 1:3 ratio and a lungo shot.
To effectively measure the weight of your coffee as an output , simply place the same scale used to measure the weight of your beans under your Flair while brewing. Lower the lever, and cut your shot short as necessary when your scale reads the appropriate weight of coffee based on your selected ratio.

Alright Then Whats Drip Coffee
Drip coffee refers to a coffee preparation method where hot water is added to the coffee grounds and allowed to drip through, resulting in a cup of coffee and water mixed together.
This is a pretty open ended definition, so the SCA, in the 1950s, attempted to standardize the process by developing a Gold Cup Standard, it’s also super jargony and awesome:
“Coffee shall exhibit a brew strength, measured in Total Dissolved Solids, of 11.5 to 13.5 grams per liter, corresponding to 1.15 to 1.35 “percent” on the SCA Brewing Control Chart, resulting from a solubles extraction yield of 18 to 22 percent*.”
Many more explainers are needed for this one, but in the spirit of brevity we can simplify this to say: proper drip coffee should be brewed with a recipe.
If you want to get a little more technical, you could say good drip coffee should be pretty strong and extract most of the tasty stuff from the coffee grounds through proper brewing technique.

Espresso Single Shot Vs Double Shot
Okay, brace yourself because were about to throw espresso into the mix, and things are about to get a bit tricky.
If youre looking to make a latte, a cappuccino, or any other espresso-based drink, forget the Golden Ratio altogether. Espresso brews in a totally different way, with a coffee to water ratio of approximately 1:2.
Standard espresso machines have a portafilter and a coffee basket that measures 58mm wide. Espresso requires that you grind the beans, tamp them in the basket, and pull the shot.
But how much is an actual shot of espresso?
A single shot of espresso requires approximately seven to nine grams of ground coffee and produces one fluid ounce. A double shot of espresso, called a doppio, requires 14 to 18 grams of coffee and produces two fluid ounces.
Lets recap for a second a single shot is one ounce. A double shot is two ounces. Its pretty simple and straightforward until we start delving into the different types of espresso shots that exist.
The 1:2 water ratio refers to a standard espresso shot. But it varies if you want a regular espresso shot or a lungo.
The perfect coffee to water ratio for a lungo is about 1:3. The ristretto ratio is about 1:1.
No matter what strength or water ratio you prefer, making a great cup of espresso always starts with pulling the perfect shot!
