What Is A Healthier Alternative To Coffee Creamer

Coffee-Mate Sweet Creme Vegan Coconut Milk Creamer (Dairy-free, lactose free)

Real full-fat cream from grass-fed cows raised on pasture is a better option when it comes to using dairy in your coffee, but, again, I wouldnt suggest using it daily due to the general inflammatory nature of cows milk, explains Dr. Hyman. And what about non-dairy creamers, like ones made from oat or almond milks? Non-dairy creamers are not necessarily better, though, and you still have to be very careful about reading labels. Maybe its time to adjust your palette and try skipping coffee creamers altogether. Especially if youre one of the coffee addicts averaging multiple cups a day.

Does Coffee Creamer Become More Acidic As It Sits

Yes, if the coffee creamer is just starting to go south, you will see the cream curdling a little bit after adding it to a hot beverage. And thats the time you know its getting more acidic and sourer.

However, coffee itself is acidic. As the heat rises, it begins to curdle the mixture even a little bit more. So, if it doesnt curdle too much, then that particular creamer is still okay.

How Do You Tell If The Creamer Has Gone Bad

If you notice the following characteristics in your creamer, chances are, its already ruined.

Sour Taste

If the product you are using has changed its flavor and turned itself into a sour mixture, then its a sure sign that the creamer has gone bad.

Altered Texture

Has your creamer changed its texture a bit?

Instead of the smooth liquid form, do you think the texture is a bit chunky and uneven?

It means, the product has gone bad or at least starting to get worse day by day!

Bad Odor

You will notice a sour, weird smell in the creamer if it goes bad. Along with the clumpy creams, there will be a detectable bad smell coming off from the product.

Molds

For powdered creamer, you need to search for molds as well as the change in texture and odor. The easiest way of knowing whether or not your creamer has gone bad is to taste it a little bit before adding into the mix. If it tastes good, the product is okay. If not, then its probably a good idea to dispose of it in the bin.

Whats The Difference Between Heavy Cream Half

COFFEE MATE Non

If you are one of the 72 percent that likes cutting black coffee with milk or or another non-dairy option, youre likely to reach for one of three choices: heavy cream, half-and-half, and coffee creamer. Healthline explains that heavy cream or heavy whipping cream is the high fat cream which normally gets skimmed off the top of fresh milk, and then packaged and sold separately. Cream is usually sorted according to its fat content, though some creams have thickeners added to it to improve its consistency. Half-and-half is the product of mixing cream and milk, giving us a dairy product that is thicker than milk, but lower in fat than cream. Healthline points out that fat-free versions of half-and-half might substitute cream with corn syrup, making for an additive that is higher in sugar.

Coffee creamer, which today comes in a variety of flavors from Dunkin vanilla to Coffee mate Snickers contain no real milk, so are typically non-dairy and lactose-free. But of the three, coffee creamer comes with alarm bells, because most are usually made with a mix of water, plenty of sugar, and vegetable oil. Healthline also notes they can come with additives like carrageenan, cellulose gum, and artificial flavorings to mimic textures and flavors of the real deal.

How Long Do Individual Coffee

Liquid Coffee Mate creamers can last for about 5 to 7 days from the given date on the container. Even if the Coffee Mate creamer is unopened, it quickly gets spoiled. It usually happens after the 7th day of the expiration date given on the box.

Open Coffee Mate creamer can last for about 2 to 3 weeks without getting spoiled. No matter what the expiry date, liquid creamers dont last longer than 2 to 3 weeks.

As for powder Coffee Mate, an opened bottle can last for about 1 to 2 months. In comparison, a closed bottle can last for about 2 to 4 months.

No matter if you get Coffee Mate in powder form or liquid form, both can get spoiled. Storing Coffee Mate in a fridge helps to keep it fresh and keeps it from getting spoiled.

What Kind Of Factors Influence The Shelf Life Of The Creamer

1. Packaging Date

Usually, each packet of coffee creamer comes with an expiration date label on top. The expiration date determines how long the product lasts well and after which it should not be used anymore.

2. Exposure To the Environment

Depending on whether or not you have exposed the liquid/powder to moisture and the outside environment, its shelf life may vary a lot.

In addition, the product should be stored in a far distance than heat or any extreme temperature to last for a long time.

3. Storage Method

The shelf life of this product also gets influenced by your storage method.

Suppose, you have stored it in a cool, dry place where there isnt that much extreme condition, the powdered form is more likely to stay fresh in this situation.

However, for liquid substance, its best to refrigerate it to increase its longevity.

4. Processing Of The Creamer

How the creamer is made tells you a lot of things.

A concentrated creamer has a thickened density that allows it to last longer. Then again, powdered form tends to outlast both concentrated and liquid forms, as its less affected by its surrounding environment.

COFFEE MATE Sugar Free French Vanilla Liquid Coffee ...

Coffee-mate brand nondairy creamers contain sodium caseinate which is a form of protein from milk. Caseinate is a common ingredient in nondairy milk substitutes. FDA regulations require that when foods characterized on the label as nondairy contain a caseinate ingredient, that ingredient must be followed by a parenthetical term such as a milk derivative. Here is the ingredient listing for Coffee-Mate French Vanilla Flavor , for example, with the pertinent parts bolded:

INGREDIENTS: WATER, SUGAR, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED SOYBEAN AND/OR COTTONSEED OIL, AND LESS THAN 2% OF SODIUM CASEINATE **, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, CELLULOSE GEL, CELLULOSE GUM, COLOR ADDED, CARRAGEENAN.

If you have a severe milk allergy, it probably means you are allergic to one or more of the proteins found in milk. Milk allergies are not to be confused with lactose intolerance, which is an inability to digest some or all of the lactose in milk. Remember that true allergies to proteins found in milk, casein or whey proteins such as lactalbumin or lactoglobulin, can be very serious. People with such allergies must usually avoid all milk or dairy products or foods that may contain milk protein, such as nondairy coffee creamers. People with milk allergies should not use Coffee-mate or other nondairy coffee creamers if they contain caseinate, a milk derivative.

Is Coffee Mate Keto

No, Coffee-mate is not keto-friendly.

Coffee-Mate contains hydrogenated vegetable oil sourced from coconut, palm kernel, or soybean that contains artificial transfat.

Although transfat has technical advantages for food processing, we cant ignore the fact that it is linked to various adverse effects.

Transfat is a no-no in the keto diet as it increases the risk of developing heart diseases and raises the level of badcholesterol in the body.

In that sense, you should avoid Coffee-mate if youre on a keto diet.

Here are my suggestions for the best keto coffee creamers:

What Happens If You Drink Bad Creamer

Drinking expired Coffee-Mate creamer isnt fun, but it usually doesnt cause serious issues. For most people, the worst-case scenario involves diarrhea or food poisoning. You may experience stomach upset or a bad taste in your mouth. Youll often realize that Coffee-Mate has been left out too long after the first sip, so its easy to avoid extended exposure to bacteria.

What Makes It Non

While used in very small amounts , the sodium caseinate in the creamer is not a vegan ingredient. Its a protein derived from milk commonly known as casein and is an important protein in the cheese-making process.

It may seem strange to add in a milk protein to a creamer that doesnt have any other milk ingredients, but it helps keep the product stable. The casein protein helps prevent the water and oil from separating. Plus, casein has been separated from all the other components in milk, so it really is free of lactose .

What Does Milk Add To Our Coffee

Trying Coffee Mate Natural Bliss Coconut Milk Creamer (Dairy Free)

My primary reason for every adding milk to coffee has always been for improving the taste. Also, it does something else to the coffee it adds texture, giving it that nice, creamy, light brown color to our hot brewed coffee as opposed to having a cup of straight black coffee.

But of course, there are other components being added to our coffee as well that we cant overlook like additional fat and calories. In fact, a regular eight ounce cup of black coffee can contain as little as four calories. Adding that extra spot of milk or creamer to lighten it up and add flavor? That can be as high as 55 calories. And if youre an average coffee drinker, who drinks somewhere between three to four cups of coffee daily, with milk/creamer, that can come to an additional 200 calories for the day. Just on the surface, if I was dieting, then cutting back on the amount of milk in my coffee would be something I need to look at.

Perhaps consider low-fat milk or other alternative especially if you cant live without that creamy taste, or cant tolerate the bitter taste of black coffee.

Other Foods That May Contain Hidden Milk Protein

There are other foods that would seem to be free of milk protein, but which may contain milk proteins. Check the ingredient listings to be sure. The following is a partial list of foods that, at first glance, appear to be milk protein free, but that may harbor milk proteins. This does not mean that these foods must absolutely be avoided, but caution is advised and the advice of your doctor should be followed.

  • Butter Technically people with allergies to milk are allergic to the proteins in milk. Butter is the fat from milk and, at this time, there are no known intolerances to fat in milk. However, most butter has traces of milk protein in it. The only way to be sure if a butter was pure fat, with no trace of milk protein, would be to have it tested.
  • Cream The same goes for cream as goes for butter. Technically, people with milk allergies can tolerate pure cream. Some cream may contain traces of milk protein.
  • Margarine would certainly seem to be milk free, being that it is a butter substitute. However, most modern margarines contain milk protein ingredients or even milk, such as buttermilk. These product labels will have a milk warning such as CONTAINS: Milk just after the ingredient listing, and/or a parenthetical term, as for the coffee creamer, above, for milk proteins.

Of course, there can be many other sources of milk or milk proteins that may not be obvious. Most breads or pastries contain milk or milk ingredients.

Be sure to use raw cashews you can usually find them in the bulk section of your grocery store or online. Roasted or salted cashews will give you a pretty funky tasting milk. Look for organic if possible. Some chefs will tell you to only buy whole raw cashews as the pieces can be dry, but whole raw cashews can get really pricey so I usually buy the halves or pieces and havent noticed any differences.

Soak your cashews for at least two hours to soften them, I even prefer at least four hours. You can also soak them overnight up to 12 hours for an even easier recipe, just soak them before you go to bed and whip up your cashew milk in the morning. You can soak them at room temperature or in the refrigerator, if I soak longer than four hours I usually pop them into the fridge. You dont have to tightly cover the container, but I usually put something over it to keep the dust out if I have it on the counter.

Make as much as you need for the week on Sunday, it will keep in the refrigerator in a mason jar for about a week. Twelve ounces is just about right in my house for two people to have a splash each morning. Double the recipe if you need more. Just like store-bought stuff, it might separate a little which is no big deal, just shake it up before using.
