Collagen In Your Coffee A Scientist Says Forget It

How To Grind Coffee Beans Using The Magic Bullet

Collagen products are popping up everywhere. While collagen is probably most well known for its touted skin care benefits and as a major component of lip enhancers and injections, some celebrities, like Kourtney Kardashian, are suggesting that people drink it. Products derived from collagen are not just in skin creams and dietary supplements but even in pillow covers and clothing. Kardashian is even selling collagen supplements.

Collagen is the bodys most abundant protein, made up of amino acids, or peptides. It literally glues our bones, cartilage, skin and blood vessels together. Its what makes our tissues grow, mature and move. Its presence under your skin can keep it from sagging over time.

Because our bodies begin to lose collagen in our 20s, skin creams and treatments made from the connective tissues of animals seem like an effective way to combat age. And, it has few side effects.

But theres a catch or two. As a female interested in aging gracefully and as a scientist who studies collagen, I have found the plethora of collagen-based products to be interesting. I have been involved with studying collagen for over a decade as our lab is working to develop a collagen made solely in a laboratory instead of sourcing from animals. I have asked other collagen-knowledgeable colleagues what they think of everyone putting it in their coffee, and I get some smirks.

Ask About Your Medications

You may need to stop taking some of your medications before your procedure. Talk with your doctor about which medications are safe for you to stop taking. We have included some common examples below.

Anticoagulants

If you take a blood thinner, such as to treat blood clots or to prevent a heart attack or stroke, ask the doctor who prescribes it for you when to stop taking it. Examples are listed in the Common anticoagulants table. There are others, so check with your doctor if youre not sure.

Common anticoagulants
  • warfarin

Medications for diabetes

If you take insulin or other medications for diabetes, you may need to change the dose. Ask the doctor who prescribes your diabetes medication what you should do the day before and the morning of your procedure. Tell your doctor you will be drinking a sugar-free clear liquid diet the day before your procedure.

If you take metformin or a medication that contains metformin , dont take it the day before or the day of your procedure.

Drinking An Adult Dose Of Miralax

  • 1Open the MiraLAX bottle and look inside the cap. All bottles of MiraLAX come with lids that double as measuring cups. While the outside of the cap is purple, the underside is white up to a line that is marked for 17 grams, which is the proper single dosage for MiraLAX.XResearch source
  • Get a box of single-dose MiraLAX packets so you dont have to measure it out every time.
  • Generic brands of MiraLAX usually have a measuring cup inside the cap as well, although the particular setup may vary. The standard dose is always 17 grams, though.
  • 2Fill the cap with MiraLAX up to the marked 17-gram line. Pour the fine, white powder into the cap until it fills the white section of the caps underside. Gently tap or shake the cap in order to level out the powder and make sure its at the 17-gram line.XResearch source
  • If you have a box of single-use packets, simply pour the contents of a single packet into your chosen beverage .
  • Do not take a larger dose of MiraLAX unless instructed by your doctor. Talk to a doctor before giving a child under 17 any amount of MiraLAX.
  • 3Pour the MiraLAX into 48;;fl;oz of your chosen liquid. MiraLAX can be taken with hot, cold, or room temperature liquids. You need at least 4;;fl;oz of liquid to fully dissolve a single dose, but youll get the best results with a full 8;;fl;oz glass, which is about the size of a coffee cup.XResearch source

    Giving Miralax To Kids

  • 1Contact your doctor before giving MiraLAX to kids under 17. MiraLAX is generally safe for kids aged 6 months and older, but it is not labeled for kids under 17. Do not give any amount of MiraLAX to a child who is 16 or younger without talking to their pediatrician.XResearch source
  • Its important to get the right dosage based on the childs size and age. Too much MiraLAX may cause very watery stools and possibly dehydration, while too little may not be effective.
  • 2Clarify the pediatric dosing instructions with your doctor. For a pre-teen or teen, the doctor will probably advise you to give a standard 17-gram dose. For younger kids, they might recommend a half-dose, in which case youll need to fill the cap halfway up to the marked line. For reference, the standard dosage rates for children are as follows:XResearch source
  • Kids 6 months and older: 0.5 – 1.5 g per 1;kg of body weight.

  • 3Contact the doctor right away if your child experiences side effects. While rare, children may experience the same serious side effects as adults when using MiraLAX. Stop using the product and tell the doctor right away if the child has any of the following:XResearch source

How To Use Miralax 17 Gram Oral Powder Packet

Take by mouth usually once daily, or as directed by your doctor or the directions on the product package.

If you are prescribed the individual packets, mix the powder as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are using the bulk bottle, use the provided cap to measure the prescribed dose. Mix the powder with a glass of liquid such as water, juice, soda, coffee, or tea. Before drinking the solution, stir the powder well until it completely dissolves. Otc Laxatives For Constipation Relief

Several types of over-the-counter laxatives can relieve constipation, such as:

    • Stool softeners, like Colace or Surfak, add moisture to the stool to keep them from being too dry and hard. However, you might develop electrolyte imbalance if you use stool softeners too often.
    • Fiber supplements, such as Benefiber, Citrucel, or Metamucil, increase the amount of fiber in your body, which draws water to make stool softer and bulkier. If you don’t drink enough water with fiber supplements, you may end up even more constipated.
    • Osmotics, like Miralax, pulls water into the colon for easier bowel movement. Some side effects include bloating, nausea, and increased thirst.
    • Stimulants or contract laxatives, such as Dulcolax or Senokot, act on the intestinal wall and increase muscle contractions to help you pass stool more easily. You may experience belching, cramping, and diarrhea as stimulants are more likely to cause uncomfortable side effects.
    • Rectal laxatives, like Pedia-Lax or Dulcolax, are often used as enemas or suppositories to cause contractions in the intestinal wall or keep moisture in the stool.

Many individuals tend to overuse laxatives, which can cause your body to become dependent on them.

It’s best to avoid using them habitually because severe cases of dependence may cause damage to the tissues, nerves, and muscles of your intestines and bowels.

    If you do decide to use laxatives, start with a quarter or half dose to see how it affects your body.;

Is It Safe To Use Miralax Long

    No one told me!

Over-the-counter MiraLAX and other laxatives are usually only recommended for short-term use, up to a week.

If your constipation lasts longer than a week, you should see your doctor. Your doctor may want to evaluate the cause of your constipation. Depending on the cause, your doctor may recommend long-term use of MiraLAX or other treatments.

What Can You Put In Your Coffee While Fasting

It’s first important to determine what type of fasting that you’re using. With a “clean” fast, anything added to coffee will break a fast. In fact, depending on who you talk to, even coffee can break a fast. However, if your main goal with Intermittent Fasting is to tap into fat burning mechanisms, lower body fat percentage and achieve a weight loss goal, then a dirty fast is perfectly acceptable. This means items that don’t contain protein or carbs is fine in your coffee. How to MAKE COFFEE without a coffee maker or Keurig

    You should contact your doctor if you go beyond three days without a bowel movement and this is unusual for you, says Davis.;

While hormonal changes and the lack of physical activity may result in the occasional bout of constipation, chronic constipation or extremely infrequent bowel movements can have several causes, which include:

    • Colonic diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis
    • Abdominal mass, or an abnormal lump in the abdomen, caused by a cyst, immune reaction, or cancer
    • Defecatory disorders, like insufficient relaxation of anal sphincter or impairment of rectal sensation;
    • Neurological conditions, like multiple sclerosis or a spinal cord injury

If you experience symptoms like severe abdominal pain, unintended weight loss, blood in the stool, or vomiting, you need to get in touch with your primary care provider.

Coffee As A Colon Cleanse: Coffee Enemas

A coffee enema is a colon cleanse. Its a remedy said to relieve constipation and reduce general toxicity in the body. The process involves pumping a combination of cooled, freshly brewed coffee and water into your colon via an enema bag and then releasing it. Any subsequent bowel movements are likely caused by the sheer volume of fluid stimulating rectal muscles and not the coffee.

Theres no evidence that coffee enemas detox the body. Although, like a regular enema, they may relieve constipation. Coffee enemas can be very risky and, as with other types of colon cleanses, may cause:

    • electrolyte imbalance
    • increased risk of dehydration
    • bowel perforations

It is much safer to use a commercially prepared enema that you can buy at the drugstore.

Get A Letter From Your Doctor If Needed

    • If you have an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator , you will need to get a clearance letter from your cardiologist before your procedure. A clearance letter is a letter that says you can safely have the procedure.
    • If youve had chest pain, dizziness, trouble breathing thats new or worse, or have fainted in the last 6 weeks, you need to be examined by your doctor, and get a clearance letter from your doctor before your procedure.

Your MSK doctors office must have your clearance letter at least 1 day before your procedure.
