Which Of The Mugs Are The Most Durable

In the near future Ill be picking up some of the newer vacuum insulated travel mugs that have achieved top ratings by actual customers and I will re-do this experiment to see if any other mug can contend with The King.

Thermoss mug is somewhat expensive but its still cheaper than many of the newest brands to hit the market so this will be an interesting experiment to say the least.

For years now Ive featured the Thermos mug prominently on this site as the best travel coffee mug hands down so hopefully this test helps confirm that with you.

Ill even have to pick up a new Stainless King for this experiment too because I totally lost my old mug a couple of years back.

And for those that didnt watch the video note that after eight hours and fifteen minutes boiling water sealed in the Thermos mug still measured at 134 degrees, a temperature I would still consider to be a good coffee drinking temp.

Id love to see some mug out there beat that mark but at the same time Ive come to realize that extreme insulation isnt something I value as much these days.

When I make coffee I want to drink it not sit around holding it for the better part of the day.

When I update this comparison video later this year Ill be looking at other important features like whether the mug is spill or leak proof, whether the mug is easy to use one-handed, and whether the mug is durable or not.

I look forward to this project and hope youll check the video out when it goes live.

What Are Coffee Mugs Made From

Mugs come in all sorts of materials, but the most popular are stainless steel, ceramic, and plastic. Below, find which one is the best to retain your coffees temperature and for your overall safety.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is our favorite material when buying a coffee mug because its free from contaminants and toxins. It also retains the temperature better thanks to systems such as double wall insulation.

Furthermore, its easier to clean, and you can easily remove stains and odors. And its highly-resistant, just think of the YETI mug for coffee the sturdiest coffee cup from our list.

The only con would be that this material will drive up the price of the travel mug. But this extra price is totally worth it as it will keep your coffee hot and protect your health.

Ceramic coffee and travel mugs fall in second place behind stainless steel. They are easy to clean, they can keep your coffee hot, and they have low heat conduction, which means that you wont burn your hand when you touch it. But the temperature retention doesnt come close to what double wall insulation can offer.

The downside of a ceramic coffee mug is that its fragile, so its not suitable for outdoor activities, driving, or bike commuting. Theyre not spill-proof, and they break easily and thats why stainless steel makes a better material for a coffee mug.

These Mugs Keep Your Coffee Hot Longer

There are a number of ways to maximize the length of time your coffee stays hot in your mug. Obviously, the first step is to purchase an insulated coffee mug that keeps drinks hot. Secondly, you can increase the insulation further by wrapping the stay-hot coffee mug in a piece of clothing. You will also want to ensure that the coffee starts off piping-hot when it is poured into the mug.

How Do I Clean My Travel Mug

Before cleaning, consult the product details or instruction guide to see if the item is dishwasher-safe. This is a common benefit of glass and plastic travel mugs but not stainless steel. If your mug isnt dishwasher-safe, dont worry. Cleaning is still quite easy. A simple daily cleaning only requires scrubbing with dish soap and a sponge or gentle brush. Avoid using steel wool brushes and harsh household cleaners on stainless steel mugs. For a more thorough job, allow a solution of vinegar and baking soda to soak inside the mug for several minutes, then rinse and clean with dish soap before using.

Bodum Bistro 15 Oz Double

Keep your hot beverage hot with the mugs from Bodum. Theyre glass, but theyre durablethese mugs are dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe, and oven-safe. Like the Avito mugs, these double as cups that keep cold drinks cold, thanks to the vacuum insulation.

A double-walled borosilicate glass mug is the most common type of home mug youll find marketed specifically for keeping your coffee warm. I tried several brands with double-walled vacuum insulation, but only the Bodum worked as well as the two mugs above in keeping coffee warmer than a standard ceramic mug. Even then, I tried a few shapes of Bodum mugs and those produced varying results. The Bodum mugs that worked best were tall with a narrow opening at the top. A super wide-mouthed, shallow glass mug I tried did not keep coffee hotter than the standard ceramic variety, but the tall, jumbo-size worked very well, starting at a temperature of 189°F and ending at an average of 115°F.

Plus, how a smaller serving can make all the difference

The perfect cup of coffee may begin with fresh beans and a high-quality coffee maker, but the vessel from which its consumed can make the difference between a hot, aromatic brew and a lukewarm letdown.

If youre a regular coffee drinker, chances are you already have a go-to. Maybe its a novelty diner mug youve had since college or one thats basically a cereal bowl with a handle. Either way, you may have put more thought into the brew than the object its in. Lets flip the script for a moment.

An electric or insulated mug can keep a brew warm for upwards of 12 hours, but sometimes taking a less utilitarian approach can have its benefits too. An important part of our taste experience is our culture and our force of habit, says David Latourell, coffee consultant and sales manager at the Specialty Coffee Association.

Some of us drink our coffee on the way to work in the car. Some of us drink our coffee at the local diner. Some of us get our coffee from fancy coffee shops, he says. What were used to goes a long way in defining what we find pleasurable to drink from.

Coffee cups come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from short and shallow ceramics to tall and double-walled glass mugs. But whats the right choice when it comes to preserving the temperature and flavor of a brew? We turned to the experts to learn more.

Why You Should Consider Ceramic Cups

Ceramic cups are the most popular cup. Say a coffee cup, and this is the kind of cup that people picture. You probably have at least several in your cupboard. Coffee shops, restaurants, breakroomsceramic is everywhere. So why not just buy a cute ceramic mugperhaps something like this?

Ceramic cups certainly have some advantages, which explains their ubiquity.

  • Inexpensive
  • Variety of sizes and styles
  • Not too heavy
  • Doesnt affect the flavor
  • But look closely at the shape. See how the top is wider than the base? Looks aesthetically pleasing, right? So, whats wrong with that? It lets out heat like crazy.

Thats disadvantage number one. Some manufacturers attempt to solve that problem by having thicker cups. The extra weight means handles that seem to be designed for people with tiny fingers. I usually pick them up by the side, which makes for awkward drinking. And if I can pick up a coffee mug by its side, obviously the coffee is still cooling down.

Ceramic cups can also chip. And they arent very portable either when filled with coffee. Nothing like splashing hot coffee on your fingers!

Is There A Cup That Keeps Your Coffee Hot

A double-walled borosilicate glass mug is the most common type of home mug youll find marketed specifically for keeping your coffee warm. Culver 10 Oz Ceramic Retro Diner

Want to buy these in bulk? These mugs are also available in a set of four for $36, dropping the price per mug down to $9.

Many people swear by the thick-rimmed, heavy-duty mugs like those found at Waffle House, but I always thought they were a ruse. How could it be so simple? And yet, the heavy diner mug held up! A weird thing about this mug is that in all three tests right after I poured water from the kettle, the initial temperature was consistently lower than that of the other mugs. Despite using the same kettle, once the water hit the diner mug, its starting temperature ranged from 162°F to 181°F . After the initial drop, however, the water temperature stayed consistent, losing the least heat of any mug. I ended up with a temperature averaging around 118°F.

Then I found a good trick: If you rinse the interior of the mug with hot water before filling it up, it wont experience the initial temperature loss. Instead, it starts around 190°F and ends at 136°F. So, if you want to be really extra about keeping your coffee warm, use these ceramic guys, but pre-warm them like the barista does with your espresso shot. Personally, I dont love the feel of drinking from a very thick-rimmed mug, but its a sacrifice I might be willing to make for a vessel thatll keep my coffee warmer longer. A final bonus is that these mugs are cheaper than any fancy double-walled business you can buy.

Camelbak Forge Best Coffee Mug For Work

You cannot talk about the best coffee mugs to keep drinks hot or cold the longest without discussing the features of the CamelBak Forge double-walled travel mug.

With incredible features like a self-sealing cap that ensures there are no spills whatsoever. No matter how many times this travel flask rolls in your backpack, it is not going to spill.

The best thing about the Forge is that it keeps drinks very hot. If you intend to have your coffee after a few hours, say about four hours, it will be at the same temperature as when you put the beverage in.

Your coffee is not going to be lukewarm. It will be piping hot.

The lid is dishwasher safe. It also does not collect grime, thus it is very safe, and hygienic.

Because it is a self-sealing travel bottle, you have to press the trigger when you are drinking for it to release the drink. The trigger is firm but very responsive. You will almost not notice it.

Also Great: Contigo Autoseal Transit Mug

*At the time of publishing, the price was $10.

Although the Contigo SnapSeal Byron Mug isnt as hardy or leakproof as our top pick, its a wide, easy-to-hold mug that will work fine if you use it more gently. The Byron only has one sealing mechanisma tab that you push to open the sipping portwhich is easy to use, but doesnt lock closed like the lids on our other picks. The Byron also didnt keep drinks nearly as hot as the Zojirushi SM-SC. But if you wont be throwing your mug in a messenger bag or slowly sipping your drink all day, we like the Byron as a budget option.

In our tests, the Byron performed on par with the rest of the Contigo mugs we tested. In the freezer, 200-degree water cooled to 153 °F after 1 hour, and 78 °F after 8. At room temperature, water in the Byron was 172 °F after 1 hour and 115 °F after 8. Thats about the same heat retention as the Contigo Transit, our also great pick.

If you wont be throwing your mug in a messenger bag or slowly sipping your drink all day, we like the Byron as a budget option.

Ember Heated Coffee Mug

The Ember is similar to the Cauldryn but with more of a focus on design.

The cup looks absolutely beautiful and comes in both a smaller coffee cup as well as a larger travel mug.

It’s ceramic coated so you won’t get a metallic taste imparted into your coffee and it’s primarily designed to keep coffee hot and can’t warm it up very well like the Cauldryn can.

It’s pretty pricey but it’s got a great wall charger and a 1-3 hour battery life depending on what model you get.

This is perfect for people drinking coffee at home or around the office who want it to stay at that perfect temperature for hours at a time.
