Which Of The Mugs Are The Most Durable
In the near future Ill be picking up some of the newer vacuum insulated travel mugs that have achieved top ratings by actual customers and I will re-do this experiment to see if any other mug can contend with The King.
Thermoss mug is somewhat expensive but its still cheaper than many of the newest brands to hit the market so this will be an interesting experiment to say the least.
For years now Ive featured the Thermos mug prominently on this site as the best travel coffee mug hands down so hopefully this test helps confirm that with you.
Ill even have to pick up a new Stainless King for this experiment too because I totally lost my old mug a couple of years back.
And for those that didnt watch the video note that after eight hours and fifteen minutes boiling water sealed in the Thermos mug still measured at 134 degrees, a temperature I would still consider to be a good coffee drinking temp.
Id love to see some mug out there beat that mark but at the same time Ive come to realize that extreme insulation isnt something I value as much these days.
When I make coffee I want to drink it not sit around holding it for the better part of the day.
When I update this comparison video later this year Ill be looking at other important features like whether the mug is spill or leak proof, whether the mug is easy to use one-handed, and whether the mug is durable or not.

Many people swear by the thick-rimmed, heavy-duty mugs like those found at Waffle House, but I always thought they were a ruse. How could it be so simple? And yet, the heavy diner mug held up! A weird thing about this mug is that in all three tests right after I poured water from the kettle, the initial temperature was consistently lower than that of the other mugs. Despite using the same kettle, once the water hit the diner mug, its starting temperature ranged from 162°F to 181°F . After the initial drop, however, the water temperature stayed consistent, losing the least heat of any mug. I ended up with a temperature averaging around 118°F.
Then I found a good trick: If you rinse the interior of the mug with hot water before filling it up, it wont experience the initial temperature loss. Instead, it starts around 190°F and ends at 136°F. So, if you want to be really extra about keeping your coffee warm, use these ceramic guys, but pre-warm them like the barista does with your espresso shot. Personally, I dont love the feel of drinking from a very thick-rimmed mug, but its a sacrifice I might be willing to make for a vessel thatll keep my coffee warmer longer. A final bonus is that these mugs are cheaper than any fancy double-walled business you can buy.
