Grinding The Beans Too Fine

How to Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home

Some methods of brewing, like pour-over, call for finely ground beans. But in cold brew, because you’re steeping them for upwards of 12 hours, you should grind the beans coarsely. Coffee that is too finely ground will “over-extract,” explains Phillips. Over-extracted coffee is bitter coffee, which no one wants .

Make cold brew, dilute it by half, add cream, enjoy.

Cold Brew Vs Regular Coffee Beans: 7 Things You Need To Know

Which type of coffee do you prefer? Cold brew or iced coffee? The two can be both iced coffee but prepared in different ways. Youll soon find out which do you prefer as you delve deeper.

If a pack of coffee beans is labeled as cold brew, it could only mean one thing. The pack is specifically prepared for cold brewing. It may have a filter bag included, and the bean is coarsely ground, so youre ready to get going. Its dark roasted from a choice of green beans that are full-bodied and usually have chocolatey characteristics.

Is Cold Brew Coffee Healthier Than Regular Coffee

Cold brew has a reputation of being healthier than regular coffee because its lower acidity is easier on the stomach and has less impact on tooth enamel. However, more acid isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Also, cold brewed coffee has also been shown to have a lower concentration of antioxidants than regular coffee, and it has a higher concentration of caffeine. Our take? Both types of coffee are great options, but if you can’t tolerate regular coffee, suffer from stomach problems like GERD, have been advised to avoid acidic foods, or just simply love iced coffee, cold brew may be worth a try!

Which Coffee Beans Are Best For Cold Brew

You can use any meticulously prepared coffee beans for cold brew. It boils down to your own preference. The cheapest coffee beans you can get can be made into a cold brew. However, if you are looking for quality, then choose the best coffee you can get. Choose a dark roast with sweet chocolatey characteristics. Often, coffee selling websites like Peets Coffee have a buyer guide to help you get started.

Medium roast is fine but stay away from light to super light roast. They have high acidity content, which is often not desirable for cold brew. Besides, cold water weak extracting power wont get all the coffee goodness you wanted.

Combine With Cold Water

Once the beans are ground, its time to combine them with water . There are several ways to go about this, depending on what you have available to you at home. The most important part is finding a vessel that is large enough to hold the beans and water at the ratio you choose .

I like using a quart-sized wide-mouth mason jar to brew my cold brew. It does hold a little less water than Id like for the perfect ratio, but its super convenient. You can also use a large quart glass measuring cup, bowl, or pitcher. Another option you might have is to use a French Press. Then, when its time to strain, you simply have to press down on the filter.

Pour the water over the grinds in whichever vessel you choose, ensuring the grounds are all wet . You can also use a spoon to gently press the grounds down once youve added the water to ensure they are thoroughly wet .

The Best Grind For Cold Brew Coffee

Even if one finds the absolute perfect coffee grounds, the consistency of the grind cannot be off or it will impact the cold brew in a negative way.

The most ideal type of grind to use with cold brew will be one that feels like sand from the beach when you touch it. There cannot be any water where the coffee will be stored or else it may compromise the coffee, so take care to ensure there is no moisture in the air.

Avoiding the idea of using any type of instant coffee, it leaves a person with two options pre-ground coffee, or ground by hand. There are pros and cons to both.

What Happens If You Use Fine Ground Coffee For Cold Brew

How to: Three Ways to Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brews should not be brewed with fine ground coffee due to their acidity, which can overextract and produce bitter results. Depending on the amount of finely ground beans used, the cold brew can range anywhere from 6 to 16 hours. However, for beans that are finer, the temperature of the brew will remain less acidic than regular brewed coffee.

Remember To Dilute The Cold Brew Concentrate

One thing to keep in mind is that youre actually making cold brew concentrate. And this is pretty potent stuff. Only drink this straight up if you want to feel jittery and buzzy for the rest of the day .

Instead, what I recommend is serving this up over ice or diluting 50/50 with water. I also recommend adding your favorite milk, like almond milk, cashew milk or oat milk, for a deliciously creamy, and definitely thirst-quenching beverage.

How Long Do I Brew The Grounds

The short answer: 10-12 hours for a 32 ounce container. Scale up to 24 hours for a larger batch.

More details

The longer your brew steeps, the more it will extract. Thats great up until it isnt. Just like when you use a too-fine grind, over extracted coffee tastes bitter.

On a warm, sunny day, you can also brew outdoors or in a sunny window. The warmer the temperature, the lower the brew time. Of course, this will also change up your flavor profile, since its not technically cold brew if you’re brewing in the warm sun.

Heres our general recommendations, though you can test your batches for shorter or longer to find your sweet spot.

The Best Beans For Cold Brew

The quality of your cold brew is directly affected by the type of beans you choose to use! Since cold brew is lower in acidity, the flavors of the coffee itself are more prominent than in regular coffee. This means that if you use low-quality coffee, you’re going to REALLY taste the bad notes. For this reason, we recommend using a high-quality coffee. It may cost a bit more, but you’ll still be saving money vs. buying from the grocery store or coffee shop.

I’ve tried many varieties to make my coffee with, and I’ve found I prefer to use a medium to medium-dark roast because the long steeping process will produce a deep flavor that I don’t want to be overshadowed by roasting. At this moment, my absolute favorite to use has become this half-caff Mayan water process from Stone Street Coffee. It has the best flavor , and I love that I can get a brew that’s lower in caffeine. I like to order in bulk from their website because they will coarsely grind the beans for you, and it’s a bit cheaper. Below are a few other options I’ve enjoyed:

Do I Have To Use Coarsely Ground Coffee

Is Cold Brew Coffee Better for You Than Regular Coffee ...

Literally, you have no choice! Your hands are tied on this one.

Yes, you have to use coarsely ground coffee. The reason you need, literally must use a coarse grind is due to brew time and the surface area of grounds that are in contact with water. A finer grind gives a much larger contact area with the water, a coarse grind has a smaller contact area.

When you are brewing for such a long period of time with a smaller grind size you will end up over extracting and end up with a very bitter and off tasting coffee as a result. The over extraction is simply pulling out too many of your beans flavors. There is also a high probability of getting dry clumps if not submerged well.

Due to using a cheese cloth or something similar, there is no risk of getting fine grinds in your cold brew coffee.

A coarse grind will simply get you much better results for the water temperature used and the brewing time. Be sure to TAFO Taste And Find Out every few hours. Once it tastes as youd like you can remove the grounds and halt the extraction process.

As a side note, as always try not to use pre-ground coffee beans, here at Latte Love Brew we encourage you to always do your grinding and home roasting for more control over all aspects of the process. Above all, grinding and roasting your own beans gives you maximum freshness.

Can I Use Regular Coffee For Iced Coffee

All you need is 1-1/2 cups of brewed coffee at room temperature. Then add cold milk, half and half, coffee creamer, or sweetened condensed milk to taste. If you decide to go with regular ice cubes, you can prepare the drink in a shaker container and then strain off the ice so it doesnt dilute the drink.

What Is The Best Roast For Cold Brew

The best type of roast to use with a cold brew for an amazing coffee flavor is a dark roast. A dark roast is better than a medium roast as you can pull out the distinctive low temperature coffee flavors in a shorter time. On average a light roast takes double the time to extract the flavors and ends up being a very bright and light coffee, as a cold brew has a very mellow, subtle, taste as it is.

Due to not pulling out any of the high temperature flavors, aromatics of coffee or the oils I strongly advise that you do not use your speciality beans, or single origin beans at all. It would be not just a waste of beans but a waste of your money too.

As quick word on beans, any middle of the road quality beans will do. Not cheap ones, definitely not expensive ones, are fine for this type of brew.

If youre using a flavored coffee, youll want to cut it with regular unflavored coffee, otherwise the flavors will be very strong. Ive made flavored cold brew coffee with 3/4 cup regular coffee and 1/4 cup flavored coffee grounds .

Since its soaking for hours, those flavors have time to soak get into the coffee more than they would if you were making flavored hot coffee, so start sparingly with flavored coffee grounds.
