There Could Be Gluten In Your Coffee

Of course, it’s also possible that you are, in fact, reacting to gluten in your coffee. Even plain coffee beans can be cross-contaminated if they’re processed in a shared facility or on equipment that also processes gluten-containing ingredients.

When you add creamer products and sugar to the mix, your odds of a reaction from gluten can rise substantially .

If you’re getting symptoms from your plain coffee , rule out the creamer and cross-contamination from your sweeteners first. Some sweeteners also may pose a problem for someone who’s gluten-free.

At that point, if things haven’t improved, you may need to switch coffee brands. You also may want to consider buying plain coffee beans and grinding them yourselfground coffee offers more of a chance for cross-contamination at the food manufacturing level, simply because it’s more processed.

Coffee And Mycotoxin Contamination

Another potential problem with coffee is the presence of mycotoxins . Coffee beans are known to be high in a toxic mold compound known as ochratoxin A. Many people tolerate this exposure just fine, but some chronically ill patients can have severe reactions to these mycotoxin compounds. Roasting and processing the coffee beans can reduce the quantity of these toxins, but the results vary based on the type of bean and the type of processing.

It can be hard for people to pinpoint the problem because coffee is a gluten-free food. People suffering from symptoms are eating a TRUE gluten-free diet and examining every inch of their lives for hidden gluten in an attempt to explain why theyre still suffering from symptoms. Unfortunately in most cases, theyre coming up empty. Even many doctors fail to connect cross-reactive foods like coffee when their gluten-sensitive patients come in for help.

Flavored Coffee And Gluten

Coffee beans or ground coffee that you buy pre-flavored are likely to be considered gluten-free, and may even be labeled “gluten-free.” But that’s not the end of the story.

Coffee flavorings generally are made with a proprietary blend of “natural flavors.” This term can hide gluten-containing ingredients, most commonly barley-based flavorings. But it appears we don’t need to worry about “natural flavors” in this contextthose used in coffee are rarely if ever, derived from gluten grains.

However, many coffee flavorings have an alcohol base. That alcohol typically is derived from grains, including gluten grains.

The conventional wisdom among some celiac disease and gluten sensitivity experts are that distillation removes the gluten protein from the alcohol, and so alcohol is considered gluten-free even if it’s derived from gluten grains. However, many people experience gluten reactions to distilled grains.

The amount of grain-based alcohol in flavored coffee is minuscule, even if there was some residual gluten left in that alcohol, it would register way below the 20 parts per million;which is generally considered “gluten-free.” But a minuscule amount is all it takes for some people;to react, although very, very few people are this sensitive to trace gluten.

Is Coffee Safe On A Gluten Free Diet Or Does It Mimic Gluten

In 2013, Aristo Vojdani and Igal Tarash in Food and Nutritional Sciences that examined the cross-reactivity of coffee. What the researchers found was that highly-processed coffees, such as instant coffee and popular ground coffees, produced the most cross-reactivity in test subjects. Gluten-free instant coffee is one of the most processed forms of coffee that you can drink.

What researchers believe is that the processing itself contributes to the problem, since organic, whole-bean coffees did not produce cross-reactivity issues. While more research is needed, its thought that the proteins in coffee are changed in such a way during processing that the body perceives them as a threat, which causes the same inflammatory responses and symptoms as gluten in those that are sensitive or allergic to it. We see this same type of problem with dairy. The processing of the dairy changes the dairy protein and creates a gluten like reaction.

How To Make The Iced

First step is to add almond milk to a large glass with ice.

After that, pour in iced coffee until it has reached the top of the glass. Your glass should be completely full with coffee and milk at this point. I dont leave a lot of room for creamer because personally, I like only a littler bit.

Then, add your creamer to the top of your coffee. You can add as much or as little as you like, but I usually do about a tablespoon, give or take.

Thats it! My favorite iced coffee recipe that YOU can make at home in only a few minutes! Its easy, delicious, and perfect for when you just need a little bit of caffeine in your system.

have you ever asked someone for a recipe and they either:

a) give you the recipe minus a few ingredientsb) tell you they will give it but never do?c) tell you it’s a family heirloom and can’t be given out?

well i have all of the above happen to me! below is my most sacred recipe. it is perfect in its simplicity and i love that it makes people so damn happy! its gluten free, peanut free, egg free, tree nut free, low in calories- can be made for dairy free!

i first tasted cold drip iced coffee in 1986 as a college student in new orleans. i didn’t even like coffee but this stuff was different! it was the best coffee i ever tasted- perfectly smooth and just a tiny bit sweet. i;forgot about this divine creation until a few years ago- the new york times ran a recipe for “New Orleans cold drip iced coffee” THATS IT!!!!

Is Ice Cream Gluten

Im starting a new series of posts where I answer some common questions that dont really fit anywhere else, and Im starting with the sometimes desperate question , Is ice cream gluten-free? This is a little tricky to answer because the general, base answer is yes, but in most specific situations the answer is no.

The basic ingredients of ice cream are gluten-free: milk, cream, and sugar, with eggs or a gum added in some cases. If it is a simple, natural ice cream, flavorings like natural vanilla bean and chocolate are also gluten-free.

But unfortunately, ice cream ingredients are rarely this simple and natural anymore, and even natural ice creams may contain ingredients with gluten in them, the most obvious that comes to mind is chocolate chip cookie dough.

So the answer is: it varies.

To stay safe, only try ice cream specifically labeled gluten-free. Dont assume anything as many ice cream brands are loaded with unnecessary ingredients, many of which may contain gluten in a manner not specified on the label.

In addition, try to stay with simple flavors. Fancy combination flavors like Super Kitty Litter Krunch are more likely to incorporate a hidden source of gluten or to suffer from cross-contamination during its manufacturing and packaging.

    • Avoid anything with oat milk at Dunkin Donuts. Dunkin Donuts uses Planet Oat Milk which does not have any gluten-free certification on the label, on their website, or certified gluten-free oats in the ingredient list. Learn more about how to know when oats are celiac-safe in this post.
    • Avoid drinks that say they are smoked as smoke flavoring is at higher risk of being gluten derived.
    • Avoid drinks that are flavored with cookie dough, there is a higher chance of these having gluten-derived natural flavors. Without an official gluten-free menu from Dunkin Donuts, Id deem this drink as a higher risk.
