How To Choose The Best Chamomile Tea

There are two main chamomile plants Matricaria chamomilla and Chamaemelum nobile. Those two types are better known as German and Roman chamomile. And then, there are wild and garden grown plants, and different cultivars, each having a slightly different chemical composition. They all have similar benefits and similar taste. All other types, such as Hungarian, Egyptian and Indian are likely belong to these two groups, except Wild and Moroccan chamomile.

Pretty little flowers of German chamomile belong to a daisy family.

If your main goal is relaxation and better sleet, both types may help. But, if you are looking for relaxing muscles too, German chamomile or true chamomile may be a better option. If you want a sweet tea, opt for the German one.

Blends containing both Chamomile and some other calming and soothing herbs may be the best choice for sleeping problems. Lavender, hops, peppermint and bitter orange may enhance the benefits of pure Chamomile flowers and offer relaxation for a better sleep.

    Which Teas Contain Caffeine

Sometimes we need that energy boost and only caffeine can cut it. Generally, black teas contain the most caffeine. Weve already mentioned Earl Grey and English Breakfast.; Yerba Mate tea is a herbal tea native to South America. It contains more caffeine than almost any other type.

Caffeine content has several variables. Weve briefly mentioned a few already: trace contamination, time spent steeping or brewing the tea and even water temperature. Other differences include where the tea leaves have come from, the grade of the leaves, the altitude of where they were grown, and even whats gone into the soil.

    How To Drink Chamomile Tea

Now that youve made your cup of chamomile tea, lets discuss how to drink it. By this I mean how often, or how much tea in one sitting, and even what to mix it with.

Chamomile tea is a mild sedative, so I would advise against drinking too much of it. Limiting yourself to about 3 cups a day should be safe, since by this amount it can help you relax without producing side effects.

As for when to drink chamomile tea, that depends on you and what you need it for, If youre trying to fall asleep and have an easier time battling insomnia, then you will need to drink it about half an hour before bed.

I would say maybe another cup 203 hours before bed, if you really need to relax and think you need tome extra help.

If youre just trying to unwind in the middle of the day, like maybe you have a 3 hour window, then one cup at the beginning of your break will definitely help. No more than that though, if youre going to need to be very focused and have a sharp mind once your break is over.

    Does Chamomile Have Caffeine

No. Chamomile does not contain caffeine.

Its made from steeping the small flower heads of either the German or Roman chamomile varieties in hot water. It contains no caffeine which is one reason its a popular evening drink because it helps encourage sleep.

Theres always the possibility of trace elements of caffeine in chamomile leaves. This is due to the way that tea is processed in factories. Trace contamination can happen but any caffeine in the chamomile would likely be a very small amount.

Whats interesting is that brewing and steeping methods can increase the amount of caffeine in a cup of tea. That wont be a factor in chamomile but its worth remembering the next time youre preparing something like Earl Grey or English breakfast. Both of which contains higher levels of caffeine. Assam tea commonly used in chai contains caffeine, too. The Spruce writes that even things like a higher water temperature or using teabags can influence how strong the caffeine content is.

Chamomile is best known for its sleep-inducing qualities. ;Generally, you drink it in the evening or about 45-minutes before bed. Its believed to reduce anxiety and to aid in relaxation thanks to an antioxidant called apigenin. When this binds to receptors in the brain, it causes sleepiness.

Its also why we were hesitant to drink chamomile tea in the morning to relax. Several people have suggested it.;Sleep inducing or not, were not sure we want to risk falling asleep at work!

Should You Add Caffeine To Your Chamomile Tea

Not really. the combination is unlikely to yield a good taste experience for most people, and if youre looking for a caffeine hit, then it probably doesnt make sense to add it to a tea renowned for helping you relax.

Its probably a better idea to just select one of the other teas and brew those instead. Save your chamomile for when you need to relax and sleep well.

    What Is Chamomile Herbal Tea

    Chamomile Tea Benefits

The name Chamomile comes from the Ancient Greek words;kamai; and;melon;. Its an apt description: these delicate flowers thrive in almost any soil and have a sweet apple-like scent. A close cousin of the daisy, Chamomiles yellow flower heads and white petals follow the sun across the day. Our Chamomile is grown on the plains of Eastern Croatia, where the flowers get more than their fair share of sunbathing done: whole fields are blanketed in gold by the thriving plants.

Once the flower heads are picked, they are kept whole and slowly dried to ensure the best possible flavour. The small golden blossoms are packed with a wealth of health benefits: chamomile has been used for medicinal purposes since the Ancient Egyptian times, where it was revered for having healing properties and was even used as a skincare cosmetic, a tradition that continues to this day in the form of hair oils and face washes.

Like our other herbal teas, Chamomile is not a true tea in the sense that it does not come from Camellia Sinensis, the tea bush. Instead, as our;post on this topic notes,;it is technically a herbal infusion, or tisane but we just;call it a tea to keep things simple.
