Best Water Bags For Sawyer Squeeze Or Survivor Filter
Despite their differences, both these filters have one thing in common: their bags arent solid and wont last much longer. That is especially the case with the Sawyer Squeeze. Its 32 fl. oz. pouches are fairly weak and will break after repeated use.
Fortunately, the flaw isnt fatal as both the filters are compatible with 28mm aftermarket thread bags. Id suggest you order a replacement bag as soon as you order one of these filters. Here are the best replacement water bags for Sawyer Squeeze and Survivor Filter Squeeze:

Differences In Their Filters

The Sawyer Mini is equipped with an 0.1 micron filter, and the LifeStraw features an 0.2 micron filter. So, which is better?
Heres the thing, 0.1 and 0.2 micron filters are almost exactly the same when it comes to pore size. Neither will let bacteria go through, and neither will be able to filter out any viruses. But the 0.1 micron filter does have a slight advantage, since the chance of the odd bacteria going through is slightly reduced.
In addition to that, keep in mind that pores do get slightly bigger with use, so its better to start out with an 0.1 than an 0.2 micron filter. But when youre comparing brand new, out of the box filter, the difference is practically negligible.

Grayl Vs Sawyer: Which Water Filter Is Better
The Grayl and Sawyer water filtration systems have some similarities but are different in a few crucial ways. Grayl is better made and is much more suited to tougher terrain if youre hiking or boondocking however, it is more expensive, and the filter cartridge doesnt last as long as the Sawyer does.
Both filtration systems are easy to use and fantastic to take on the go when you need access to freshwater while traveling, but you should be aware of the pros and cons of both systems to make an informed choice.
Here are the pros and cons of the Grayl and Sawyer water filtration systems:
Sawyer Water Filtration | ||
Pros | Holds more ouncesSharing abilityMore versatility Designed in the USProtects user from not only bacteria and protozoa, but also viruses | More affordableLasts longerWeighs lessKills bacteria and protozoaOffers a mini version for easy travel |
Cons | Does not last as longMore expensiveWeighs twice as much as Sawyer | Not as durableDoes not offer sharing capabilitiesMore cumbersome in appearance Does not kill viruses |
Each buyer will be searching for different specifications when looking for the perfect portable water filtration system, so it is important to stay open-minded when weighing out the pros and cons of each brand. However, the Grayl brand of water filtration has a better-made filtration bottle. It also offers more protection to your health and more capabilities that include sharing with others and versatility.

The Sawyer Water Filter Review describes a filter that is easy to use, reliable, and durable. After a lot of research, I decided to use this filter on my 2020 Colorado Trail hike.
Sawyer makes the Sawyer Squeeze and the Sawyer Mini. The Sawyer Mini is a lighter filter, but I need a durable filter that is not prone to clogging like the Sawyer Mini Filter. The Sawyer Squeeze is only one ounce more than the Mini.
Compared To The Sawyer Squeeze System
Sawyer Squeeze Filter
The Sawyer Squeeze Filter both eliminate protozoa and bacteria. But they dont eliminate viruses, chemicals, pesticides, or heavy metals. And they dont improve the taste or odor of the water. The Sawyer S2 eliminates all of these with the exception of heavy metals. On the plus side, the Sawyer Squeeze has a much longer useful life, is much lighter, and costs less than the S2.
TIP: Soon you can convert your current Sawyer Squeeze Filter into a Sawyer Select S1, S2, or S3 Purifier by purchasing just the bottle and foam. This will save you $15 over the full system. See more here

Snapple Takes Two To Mango Tea
As much as we love Snapple, and as much as we love mangos, somehow, we had never managed to try Snapples Takes Two To Mango Tea until now. And boy are we glad we did. Takes Two To Mango Tea has a wonderful, clean mango flavor with no funky smell and no sticky-sweet aftertaste. In fact, it tastes exactly like you might expect mango-flavored tea to taste. That is, if it were made with actual mango.
You might think it unfair when we tell you the only thing keeping Snapples Takes Two To Mango Tea out of the top five as well as out of our favorite three Snapple tea flavors is that there is no mention of mango anywhere in its list of ingredients . From that, along with a quick perusal of the ingredients list for Snapple Mango Madness, which does contain mango puree concentrate, we are left to infer that the Takes Two To Mango Tea contains no actual mango, except perhaps some distillation of mango into the natural flavors listed at the end.

Hidden Sources Of Caffeine
While caffeinated tea and coffee have been linked to some health benefits, such as lowering risk of skin and liver cancers, caffeine has some downsides. Some people are more sensitive than others and in addition to jitters, it can deplete sleep quality, especially in folks over 40, amp up anxiety and itâs addictive.
If youâre looking to limit your caffeine intake, itâs important to know what products contain the stimulant and thatâs not always obvious. Here are some hidden sources of caffeine:
For comparison, an 8-oz. cup of brewed caffeinated coffee has 100 to 200 mg of caffeine, depending on the kind.
1. Energy drinks: Why do energy drinks perk you up? While many have other ingredients that claim to boost your energy, a lot of them still rely on caffeine. Case in point, a 12-oz. can of Red Bull has 111 mg of caffeine. 5-Hour Energy delivers 207 mg in just 1.93 oz., while Vitamin Water Energy Tropical Citrus has 50 mg in 20 oz.
2. Decaf coffee: Itâs a far cry from regular coffee, but a cup of decaf will still give you around 5 mg of caffeine.
3. Iced tea: It might seem obvious that iced tea would have caffeine, since hot tea does, but sometimes we donât really think of those peach- and raspberry-flavored sweetened iced teas as having caffeine. But they do: Snapple , for example, has 42 mg per 16 oz.
5. Non-cola sodas: If you think cola is the only soda with caffeine, think again. Sunkist Orange Soda , Mountain Dew and Barqâs Root Beer all contain caffeine.
Video: Sawyer Mini Vs Squeeze

I have been asked why I use the mini instead of the squeeze, so I bought the squeeze to test out on my last trip. Here is a video I put together with a comparison of the two, and some tips on keeping them working like new while on the trail.
Okay that is the wrong video, here is the correct video …
Subject: Squeeze CapsIf you want to keep the Squeeze capped when not in use, but you don’t want the weight of the push/pull valve, and if you don’t use the Sawyer bladder…Steal the cap from the enclosed bladder as your Squeeze Cap.
Hmmm That Mini seems faster than mine.
Like many others I found the mini to slow for me. So I went to the full size sawyer squeeze. And to me the squeezing part and time it takes is no biggie.

What We Do Not Like
Susceptible to Freezing | Unlike carbon or charcoal filters, the small micro tubes will burst if exposed to sub-freezing conditions. It is also impossible to tell if the filter has been compromised due to freezing, so it is best to replace the filter if there is any doubt. A small price to pay to keep your body Giardia free.
Pro Tip: Avoiding a frozen filter is relatively easy. Any night that there is a potential for sub-freezing temperatures, place the filter somewhere inside your sleeping bag. We preferred to carry a small plastic bag to store the filter in so it would not leak inside our sleeping bags.
Collectability | When using the provided bags, it can be difficult to collect water from a variety of water sources. Larger running bodies of water make it relatively easy to collect. Trickles, small flows and slow moving water make it difficult to fill the bag up.
Pro Tip: The best way to combat this limitation is by carrying a scoop. We cut the bottom off of a plastic water bottle and used that for slower flows and small pools of water.
Single-Person Use| The Sawyer Squeeze when not set up to the gravity system is truly a one-person system. Not that the filter cannot handle double the work, but in terms of timeit is a bit of a hassle filtering for multiple people.
Pro Tip: Carry your own filter. You will thank us later.
Quick Rundown Of The Sawyer Mini:
The Sawyer MINI is one of the cheapest portable water filters on the market. Its also tiny enough to fit in your back pocket or store in a first aid kit for emergencies. Its extremely reliable, but it has a smaller filter that fills up pretty quickly. The flow rate is also not the best, so its a bit more difficult to drink from, which is why some people opt for the larger Squeeze filter. With a nipple built-into the attachment side, you dont need any adapters to use the MINI in many versatile ways. Its very simple to use and can be trusted to work when you need it.
- No adapters needed for attachments
- Excellent lifespan
- Doesnt get as much flow
- Needs backflushing more often

Versatility And Ease Of Use
The Sawyer Mini is incredibly simple to use. Dirty water goes in one end and comes out clean on the other end. The direction of flow is clearly marked with a giant white arrow on the side of the filter. Everything you need to use the filter is included. There are four ways you can use the Sawyer Mini:
Does Sawyer Water Filters Remove Heavy Metals Chemicals And Taste From The Water
Heavy Metals
Sawyer water filters are not made with charcoal. Even though certain portable water filters are incorporated with charcoal, they donât have enough dwell time and media. Thus, they are only capable of eliminating small amounts of heavy metals. To ensure safety, always opt to natural sources of water like rivers and lakes.
Chemicals
Both Sawyer Squeeze and Sawyer Mini donât remove sulfur, iron, and certain simple compounds. If you want to mask the taste, you can use flavor additives such as crystal light or Gatorade. But make sure to clean the filter immediately after using them.

Sawyer Mini Water Filter Review
$20, 2.2oz, 100,000 gallons of water treatment-How can you go wrong?
Background
Since the 80s I have played around with various different water treatments. I started out as a kid in scouts drinking straight from the springs and streams of New England, than when I went out west we used iodine in the form of Polar Pure. After that I graduated to my first full blown water filter a Katadyn Expedition that I used on my AT Thru-hike in 1996 until it broke, than I was back to the old dip & sip and Polar Pure. In 1997 I tested out the PuR Hiker before I hit the market its a very reliable water filter and one that would be the standard of most hikers for a better part of the decade.
Fast forward to 2000 and present, I moved to the PNW, I started to treat my water less and drink more and more straight from the source however after a few bouts of giardia, I decided that I needed to start treating some if not all my water going forward. I picked up Aqua Mira which I like, it treats water effectively without an aftertaste, but it takes 15 minutes or more and I hate to wait when Im thirsty.
The Mini Arrives
I generally use a hydration system, and carry a store bought water bottle, this allows me to drink easily while hiking from the hydration system, have extra capacity with the water bottle, and also have a way to fill from those hard to reach springs, etc.the Universal screw on design of the Sawyer Mini works now with my hydration system and my water bottle.
