Ingredient Spotlight: Culinary Grade Lavender

How to Make a Lavender Latte

Culinary lavender is grown specifically for eating and cooking, and your best bet is to buy it online. Lavender is an herb, and while all varieties are edible, some taste better than others. You dont want to risk consuming any plant that has been treated with chemicals or pesticides, so always look for lavender that is labeled as culinary grade, or grow your own! Both the leaves and the buds can be used in recipes.

What Does A It Taste Like

If you’ve had a lavender latte from Starbucks or your favorite coffee shop, this is a similar recipe.

With floral hint, this honey lavender latte coffee drink tastes like walking through a summer meadow. Not like sniffing a bottle of essential oils. The flavor is subtle, not overpowering.

Known for its calming effects, lavender is an aromatic herb that helps start a stressful morning. It helps keep the mood mellow despite difficult circumstances.

Lavender Latte: Wake Me Up

Before I met Matt, coffee was just coffee. I could certainly distinguish bad coffee from very good coffee, but I never really made the effort to seek it out. When I remembered to drink coffee usually sometime mid-afternoon it would be with plenty of sugar and often milk, so the coffee itself hardly mattered. More than anything, Ive always loved the smell of coffee be it instant Folgers, gourmet Four Barrel, or an Italian cappuccino.

In the mornings, Matt gets up with me to make coffee. He usually brews a big pot in our drip coffee maker, though, lately, hes been giving the Chemex a whirl. Have any of you tried this amazing invention? It brews the smoothest, creamiest coffee I have ever tasted! I pour my coffee into a to-go cup and take it with me on the road. On the weekends, we brew an even BIGGER pot and tend to drink it throughout the day. Did I mention we are coffee people?

Perhaps, in addition to traveling to eat, I also travel to drink coffee. If presented with an opportunity to take a break in the middle of my day for one single thing, Id choose a nice little cafe, a latte and a sweet little something to nibble on. A sunny seat with a view doesnt hurt, either. Based on , it sounds like a lot of you out there are coffee fans, and you have some very specific tastes! So, it seemed like a good time to share this creation with you.

Lavender Coffee: Tips For Making This Drink

What makes lavender latte special first is its rich aroma, which gives an enjoyable experience to the person drinking it. Secondly, lavender can be found as an essential oil and dried flowers and leaves, known for their soothing properties and scent.

There are many different ingredients for making a lavender latte, and some people prefer to use food items that have a strong taste, such as chocolate or coffee beans. Some exotic recipes, such as the chai latte recipe, use this beverage as an ingredient.

Some lattes use products from local farmers’ markets for added flavor in the beverage. If you are longing for refreshing and sweet things on hotter days, there are not many better ways to stay calm and relax than indulging in some fresh-brewed lavender coffee. Here are some tips for making your perfect coffee drink!

  • Buy the right Lavender syrup

If you go to the grocery store, read the ingredients carefully and be wary of artificial colors and flavors. A good one will have natural ingredients and essential oils like peppermint oil and alcohol content to preserve freshness.

  • Use high-fat milk for your Lavender latte.

Your lavender latte will lose the lavender syrup flavors when using skimmed milk, so stick to 1%, 2%, or whole milk, preferably organic or homemade. The higher the fat content, the better.

  • Do not substitute lavender syrup with vanilla flavouring.
  • Make whip cream

What To Eat With It

For The Lavender Latte:

  • Double shot of espresso
  • If you dont have an espresso machine, you can substitute 3 ounces of extra strong brewed coffee. Of course, it wont have quite the same rich body as an espresso, but youll hardly notice the difference once you add the milk and the lavender syrup.
  • 5 ounces of milk
  • These days plant-based milks are all the rage , but dairy milk remains the best choice for a traditional latte. Whole milk and 2% are the easiest to froth, but you can also use 1% or skim milk. If you have dietary restrictions and prefer a vegan milk option, look for mildly flavored and unsweetened, such as almond or oat milk. Otherwise, you risk overpowering the subtle lavender flavor.
    • 2 tablespoons lavender simple syrup
    • 8 ounce mug or glass, prewarmed

A Bonus Recipe: Iced Lavender Latte

I love a warm lavender latte as a way to bring the aroma of summer to a cold winter day, but in the summer, an iced lavender latte is a refreshing way to jumpstart the morning. And fortunately, it is just as easy to prepare, beginning with the same lavender simple syrup and a double shot of espresso or coffee. Another option, in this case, is to use a strong cold brew.

For an iced lavender latte, youll want to use a milk frother rather than a steam wand because, no surprise, you cant make cold steam. If you dont have a milk frother, a viable alternative is to just put your cold milk into a jar with a lid and shake it vigorously. You definitely wont be pouring latte art, but you will get aerated frothy milk that tastes great and adds texture to your iced lavender latte.

To assemble the iced lavender latte, add the simple syrup to the espresso and pour the mixture over iced cubes in a chilled glass. Pour the cold-frothed milk on top and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Though honey wont dissolve in the iced drink the same way it would a hot coffee, a drizzle on top is still a delicious addition.

    Make The Lavender Syrup

In a small saucepan combine the lavender and water, and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer. Allow the mixture to simmer for 3 to 4 minutes before removing from heat. Let the mixture stand until it cools to room temperature.

Once the lavender and water have cooled, use the strainer to separate the leftover lavender buds from the water. It is important that you allow it to cool prior to straining so the mixture can steep.

In a second saucepan, add the sugar and about 2 or 3 tablespoons of the lavender water. It should be just enough to wet the sugar. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer. You will want to whisk periodically. Simmer for about 4 to 5 minutes, or until you have a syrup-like consistency.

Add the rest of the lavender water. Whisk until all the sugar has dissolved. Remove it from the heat, and transfer it to the refrigerator.
