1. Not Flammable
Traditional oil-based wood stains can be dangerous. When we read the instructions for an oil-based stain well see that theyre flammable and that they need to be used in a well-ventilated area.
Coffee is not flammable. It also doesnt have stinky fumes like an oil-based stain. This means we can safely use coffee to stain wood indoors. We dont need to worry about it igniting or making sure that we have a lot of ventilation.
2. More Control
We have more control over the final color when we use a coffee stain. The color of a coffee stain is more predictable because it adds a small amount of color with each application.
3. Doesnt Get Blotchy
Some woods like pine get blotchy when a stain is applied. To prevent blotchiness when using store-bought stains, we should first apply a pre-stain wood conditioner. The pre-stain conditioner prepares the wood and helps it to stain more evenly.

We dont need to apply a pre-stain conditioner when we use a coffee stain.

You can start by making ground or instant coffee however you normally do. The amount will depend on how big the piece youre looking to stain is. For instance, if youre using instant coffee granules, some diy blogs suggest that cup of water with cup of coffee granules is enough for three coats of stain. The same rule applies if youre planning on using tea. If the piece youre going to stain is smaller, one cup with of a teaspoon of instant tea powder should do the trick. But, if youre looking to stain something of larger proportions, youre better off making a pot of tea, using 3 teaspoons of instant tea powder. Once youre done brewing your coffee or tea base, you can start coating your wood with your beverage base, to bring about a light and natural look.
If youre looking to create a darker toned stain with a more rustic look, the trick is to create an iron acetate to add to your coffee or tea base in place of regular hot water. Using this solution will help to keep your stain from fading over time.
The next thing youre going to want to do is sand down the wood. This step is crucial, if youre dealing with wood that had a previous stain or paint on it. If the water stain goes further into the wood there is not much you can do but to refinish it. But tooth paste worked great.
