An intriguing new study caught my eye for two reasons. First, there are the fascinating findings of the researchers that could dramatically change our understanding of certain types of pain and how its treated. More on the research in a moment.
The other reason this story grabbed my attention is that most of the headlines I read about this research failed to include two important words: in mice. One article didnt mention the fact that this was an animal study until a full 248 words into the story! I suggest that people determine the specific amount of water they need to drink each day based on the following 3 factors:
- Weight. People who are heavier generally need to drink more water than people who are lighter. As a starting point, take your weight and divide it by half this is approximately how many ounces of water you need to drink each day.
- Additional fluid intake. Most people drink other fluids during the day besides water. An occasional can of soda, cup of coffee, or sports drink can count towards your 8 glasses of water but aim for at least half of your daily fluid intake to be water.
- Physical activity. For every 30 minutes you exercise per day, drink an additional 10 ounces of water.

A Note About Observational Studies
When looking at the research on coffee, it is important to understand the different types of research studies. In this case, these are observational studies vs. randomized clinical trials .
RCTs are considered the best type of research, as they control for all factors and seek to find the exact reasons why and how something may be helping or causing harm. In a randomized clinical trial , participants are randomly put into a very specific and controlled environment in which to test a medication or lifestyle intervention.
Observational studies or reviews of literature look at self-reported correlations in the population. For example, many people with IBS report that drinking coffee triggers diarrhea. However, an observational study does not investigate the mechanism of action, or exactly how and why, coffee triggers an IBS flare-up.
Similarly, observational studies may find that those who regularly consume coffee also have a lower risk of developing a certain kind of disease. But this doesnt necessarily mean that coffee directly reduces disease risk it simply points to an association.
These observational studies should not be discounted. They can help guide researchers to discover what they may want to do a clinical trial on. These studies also assist other IBS sufferers by letting them know that cutting coffee may help decrease symptoms, even if we do not know why yet. Still, its always important to take these findings with a grain of salt.
