Cold Brew Coffee To Water Ratio
If you were working at a coffee shop, youd most likely be using large amounts like 1 pound of ground coffee to a gallon of water. For the average family, though, thats way too much for a weeks worth of coffee.
A more conservative ratio is to use 1 ounce of coffee to 1 cup of water. You can double or triple that amount as needed.
If you dont have a scale, youll be happy to know that I found 1 ounce of coffee beans to equal around 30g. There wasnt a noticeable difference in volume between the ground beans and the whole beans. I started with 1/3 cup of whole beans and ground them to a medium grind. I measured again and found I had around 1/3 of a cup of ground coffee.
To simplify things, then, you can use 1/3 of a cup of ground coffee to every cup of water .
Tools For Homemade Immersion Brewer

If you start with great coffee, be it light roast or dark roast, your own cold brew will be just as good, if not better than the concentrates you can buy at the store.

You dont need special coffee to make cold brew: you can probably even use regular coffee, or the coffee you regularly use at least. Like all coffee though, of course the type and quality of bean you use are going to affect the final flavour profile, so you want to choose your beans carefully.
Avoid using cheap beans though if you can. The beauty of cold brew is the gentle extraction method really brings out the more complex notes in the coffee, so you want a bean that has something to say for itself. Although cold brew made with average beans will still be light and refreshing, youre missing out on the real joy of this method.

Storing Cold Brew Concentrate
Make sure you strain the coffee grounds from the concentrate after allowing to steep for 12-24 hours. If you keep the grounds in your coffee, the end result will be stronger and more bitter.
After straining, store the cold brew concentrate in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. I like to use a large mason jar or glass carafe for this!

Cold brewed coffee can be served iced or piping hot, dealer’s choice. You follow the same method for making the coffee either way, and then either serve it over ice or warm it up in the microwave for a hot cup. When warming it for hot coffee, I often add a splash of water to dilute the coffee before warming. But this, again, is a matter of personal taste.
Too strong for your taste? Iced coffee does make a particularly strong cuppa joe! If you’re serving it iced, the ice is meant to melt and dilute the coffee a little. If it’s still a bit too much for you, just dilute your glass with some water or milk to taste.

Now that its strained and ready, its time to enjoy. Fill a glass with ice and pour in the cold brew, topping off with creamer, milk, or sugar however you take your coffee.

- Add a cinnamon stick to the grounds as you brew the coffee. The flavor is incredible, leaving a hint of warm cinnamon in each sip of the finsihed cold brew. Rinse the stick off after you strain out the grounds and add it to the final cold brew, too.
- Make vanilla cold brew by adding 1 tablespoon of vanilla bean paste to the grounds when you brew them. Of course you could be super extra and use an actual vanilla bean , but given the sheer cost of vanilla beans, Ill stick with the paste. Make sure you do stir the grounds before steeping to make sure the vanilla is incorporated.
- Add maple syrup when preparing your cold brew cup. This is a great way to add a hint of flavor and sweetness. Just pour a little in your glass, add the cold brew, and stir to combine!
- Use coffee ice cubes if you dont want any dilution from regular ice cubes. Simply pour leftover cold brew or coffee into an ice cube tray and once frozen theyre ready to use.
