What Are The Different Models Of Keurig Coffee Makers

Keurig K70 Platinum Series Overview

Keurig Coffee Maker Reviews 2019

The K70 Platinum Series featured Keurig’s top-of-the-line home brewers until the Keurig 2.0 brewing system came out.

These brewers expanded your brew size options from 4-12 oz, giving them the largest K-Cup size available to this point, and their 72 oz reservoir meant fewer refills.

While revolutionary at the time, today those features are fairly standard. And these K70 brewers don’t even have Strength Control, which was added later on.

K70 Platinum brewers can be tough to find these days, but you may come across 5 different models: K70, K71, K75, K77, and K79. What’s the difference?

  • The K70, K71, K75, and K77 are the exact same brewer with different model numbers denoting different included accessories, like K-Cup variety packs, water filter starter kits, and descaling solution.
  • The K79 is a different brewer with everything the other K70s have plus Hot Water and Rinse buttons.

All of these K70 series brewers have been discontinued, so we’ll recommend a few in-production alternatives that give you an even better brewing experience.

Keurig K15 Single Serve Compact Coffee Maker

The smallest models of Keurig dont offer a huge amount in terms of features. If you are looking for a coffee maker with a lot of flexibility, stay away, but if you are looking for something you can take out and about with you then the K15 is the Keurig to look at.

The portability of these very compact machines is virtually unrivalled. This has made the small coffee machines such as this, and the older version, the K10, quite popular.

Uses include a coffee machine for your own desk at the office, taking to a dorm room at college or even having in your camper van!

The dimensions are pretty much small enough to take with you wherever you have access to power and water. Even the power cord has been designed in a way that is easy to fold it away.

There are a few downsides to the model, and to say its features are basic would be a real understatement. There are very few options available, and though it can brew in 6 Oz, 8 Oz or 10 Oz brew settings, many have reported that increasing the size does weaken the brew somewhat.

Another downside is the lack of any sort of water reservoir. This coffee machine can only hold enough water to make one cup of coffee.

While it probably wont win in a 1 to 1 battle with any other Keurig on features, the K15 is indisputably the most portable coffee machine. If this is your main criteria then look no further.

Why Your Local Coffee Shop Isnt Using One

You may be wondering why you dont usually spot Keurig on the Top 10 lists for coffee makers. As we mentioned before, Keurig machines and other pod brewers can be great if your priority is quick coffee with minimal clean-up.

But alas, there are some things you are sacrificing in exchange for that convenienceand the biggest thing is the taste of your beloved brew. Sure, these brewers make a decent cup of coffee, but they cant compare to what the commercial machine in your favorite coffee shop can do. An equally convenient super-automatic espresso machine or even a good automatic drip coffee maker is going to give you a way better cup. But some of those can end up being about 10 times the price of a Keurig!

You have other options, though! If you are hesitant to go for a pod brewer but dont know what else is out there that would be comparable, we encourage you to take a look at some of the following manual brewing methods* and tools:

  • AeroPress: Very fast, easy clean-up, some technique required
  • Clever Coffee Dripper: Decently quick brew, easy clean-up
  • French Press: Slow process, bigger servings, great for cold brews
  • Pour Over: More technique required, easy cleaning, a slow process

*Several of these options, when combined with an electric kettle and a burr coffee grinder, will produce bolder coffee than any pod brewer ever could. Plus, none of these brewing methods hog too much valuable kitchen counter space.

Why You Should Trust Us

As a junior staff writer for Wirecutter who cares about coffee, Ive reviewed Nespresso machines and French presses. I spent more than 20 hours researching different Keurig machines and testing three. Four of us tested coffee made with more than two dozen flavors of pods, as well as a pre-ground bag from Keurig Green Mountain and a new bag from Stumptown that we ground with a Baratza Virtuoso, our upgrade grinder pick. I also interviewed Steve Alexander, president of the Association of Plastic Recyclers.

Which Keurig Single Cup System Best Suits Your Lifestyle

The video below shows me demonstrating one of the earlier models of Keurig K-Cup brewers, the B60.

You can still buy the B60, and other earlier models. And the basic system, with their patented brew head, remains largely the same, even with their most recent machines.

If you watched the video you now have an idea of how Keurig brewers work, and why you might want one.

Now lets look at the three different product types Keurig now offers.

Keurig® K-Cup® Brewing System – The Original Keurig Brewing System.

These brewers are based on the original models. They basically work in the same way, but with an updated design and a few extra bells and whistles.

More importantly, these are the Keurig brewers that work with all those boxes of K-Cups you see in your local supermarket.

They also work with non-licensed, third-party makers of K-Cups.;

Let me explain what that means.;

When Keurig launched K-Cup brewers, one of their patents covered the K-Cups themselves. This meant that if another company wanted to put their coffee in K-Cups, they had to get a license from Keurig, and pay a fee.

That patent expired a while ago, and this has freed up any and every coffee company and roaster to make their own K-Cups and sell them. And they all work in these original Keurig brewers.

Hold that thought as we move onto the next group of brewers.

Keurig® 2.0 Brewing System – Single Cup or Carafe Brewing.

The Keurig 2.0 brewers are a little different.

The third Keurig system is the Rivo system.

Keurig 20 Tips And Tricks

Here are some pro tips to help you along your Keurig coffee-making journey.;

  • To get rid of undesired taste or smell, run the Keurig with a cup of vinegar and brew some water
  • If you are using a mug or thermos that does not fit into the machine, simply place the machine on another stable item such as a book or box, such that the drink may dispense without any mess and cleanup.;
  • To prevent clogging remove the K-Cup once it is used.
  • If making hot cocoa or any milk inclusive drink, make a cleaning brew as mentioned in the first step.

Keurig 20 K575 Series

As you can guess, Keurig 2.0 K575 Series Coffee Maker is another coffee brewing machine from the Keurig 2.0 Series. This is actually an upgraded version with options for high-quantity coffee brewing. It is packed with a water reservoir of 80oz size, which is the largest reservoir in the product range of Keurig coffee makers. It also comes with a feature-rich touchscreen display that shows enough details about the brewing process. Except for the normal calibration, the machine does not consume much time for initialization process. Obviously, in this upgraded version, you can have some cool features too.

It needs to be noted that the programming feature is available for K-Carafes only. It does not work with K-Cups. This is a serious con of Keurig 2.0 K575 Series Coffee Brewer. Also, its a serious issue that you cannot use third-party K-Cups. That having said, Keurig 2.0 K575 Series Coffee Maker is useful for office purposes, thanks to the 80oz reservoir. Its a good thing that you can brew up to 30oz in a single cup. Also, for hard-core coffee makers, it offers a bunch of customizations as well.

Keurig K15 Mini Plus Coffee Maker

Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker Review

The mini K15 is a powerful single-cup brewer designed for the smallest spaces. Its no more than 11 inches in any dimension and weighs less than 10 poundsnot exactly pocket-sized, but easy enough to throw in your bag for vacations or business trips. Its unobtrusive on a desk or counter, too.

Youll get a fast brew speed with the K15, too. It takes less than 2 minutes for a 10-ounce cup and you can also brew smaller 6 and 8 ounce sizes. While the single-brew reservoir does lose some convenience points, its also what makes the machine so portable, so it has advantages, as well.

Considering the performance and the affordable price, wed call the K15 the brewer that offers buyers the best value. It doesnt have a ton of bells and whistles, but its an easy-to-use, reliable coffee maker for any space.

Features:

  • Single-brew reservoir

Keurig Coffee Makers For Beginners

From the outside, a Keurig or K-Cup coffee maker looks a lot like a drip coffee brewer. While there are similarities in the way they brew, overall a Keurig is faster, less messy, and has more internal electronic controls.

One of the main advantages of a Keurig is its simplicity from the users side. You dont have to worry about measuring the coffee or water. Just put in a K-Cup, select the size and strength youre looking for, and brew.

While there are many styles of Keurig coffee maker, they all work in basically the same way. The user selects a cup size and presses brew. The Keurig pulls the right amount of water from the reservoir or water line, heats it, and dispenses it over the ground coffee in the K-Cup.

Proper brewing on a Keurig is more about pushing the right buttons than weighing and measuring. Lets briefly walk through how to set up and use a Keurig for all the first-time owners out there.

  • Set up your Keurig on the counter. They come fully assembled in the box, though youll want to check for any tape or plastic on individual components and remove it before plugging the coffee maker in. Make sure to lift the handle and check the K-Cup brewing area for a shipping disc.
  • If the water reservoir is removable, take it off and clean it with soapy water to remove any plastic residue from manufacturing.
  • Fill the reservoir to its max fill line, then turn on the coffee maker and let it heat up. This can take up to 3 minutes, depending on which model you have.
  • The Usage Of Your Machine

    The office use machines are designed for quick coffee and heavy-duty use. However, the domestic machines are mostly simple; single-serve machines.

    The use of the machine will also decide the kind of functions you should be looking for. If you simply want a quick cup of coffee, go for the most basic models.

    If you like more strength control, a model like K575 will be a better option for you.

    Using Your Keurig 20 For Hot Water

    Gadgets For Your Home and Kitchen: Best Keurig Coffee ...

    Without a K-Cup or K-Carafe, the Keurig 2.0 can be used to make hot water for other beverages such as tea and hot cocoa. To take it a step further you can use that same hot water to make oatmeal or even noodles if you want. To make hot water with the system fill the water reservoir and brew without a K Cup or K Carafe.

    The K550 is the only model that comes with a button specifically used to distribute hot water. All the other models require you to do the method of brewing without a K cup or K carafe as mentioned before.;

    Using a K-cup you can make coffee, tea, espresso, lemonade, and even hot chocolate. To prevent the needle from clogging you should run a cleaning brew on the machine. This is especially after making hot cocoa, as some of the milk-based hot beverages are more prone to causing clogging.;

    This should be done regularly to keep up the maintenance of the machine and have it performing at tip-top shape so that each brew is perfect every time. Be sure to check the instructions on how to run the cleaning brew as the process varies from model to model.;;

    Keurig K40 Elite Series Overview

    The K40 Elite Series is one of Keurig’s flagship brewers and was introduced as an upgrade to the B40, though the two models have the exact same specs. Currently discontinued, the K40 has been replaced by the K-Classic, which offers many of the same features:

    • 48 oz reservoir
    • No Strength Control or Temp Control
    • Auto-On/Off functionality and removable drip tray
    • No pod-scanning system so it’s compatible with all types of K-Cups

    The only differences between the K40 Series and K-Classic are the K-Classic’s slightly expanded brew sizes and upgraded brewing system that ensures you’re brewing with Keurig’s latest and greatest technology for hotter, stronger cups.

    Below, you’ll see 4 model numbers with brewers that look identical:

    • K40 and K45
    • K50 and K55

    What’s the difference?

    The K40 and K45 were originally released as Keurig’s K-Elite brewers. Both came with the K-Cup variety pack, but the K45 also came with the water filter starter kit. Then, in 2015, Keurig rebranded the K40 and K45 K-Elite brewers as the K50 and K55 K-Classic brewers.
