What Is Starbucks Nitro Coffee

Is Nitro Cold Brew Keto

What is Starbucks Nitro Cold Brew?

The ketogenic diet has exploded in popularity and has supporters all over the world. It is a high fat, low carb, adequate protein. The entire aim of the diet is to make your body enter a state of ketosis. This makes it so your body uses fat instead of carbohydrates as its main source of energy.

Similar to regular coffee or cold brew, nitro is OK to eat on a keto diet. It has zero carbohydrates, zero calories, and zero sugar, which means its perfectly fine to enjoy.

Be forewarned, however, that adding sugar to your nitro cold brew would make it incompatible with the ketogenic diet. Many coffee shops like Starbucks have drinks on the menu that add cream to your nitro . As long as you stay away from these additives, you can be assured nitro cold brew will keep you in ketosis.

Starbucks’ Nitro Cold Brew Is A Whole Other Level

If you thought Starbucks’ 20-hour cold brew steeping process was intense, Starbucks Nitro Cold Brew takes things to the next level. The drink puts a twist on the coffee chain’s traditional cold brew coffee by infusing it with nitrogen bubbles. Nitro Cold Brew comes out cold, so you won’t need ice. It also comes out with a foamy top much like beer so you can forget the milk, sugar, and straw, as The Today Show website noted.

In case you were wondering, the drink has built quite a following. In fact, the Nitro Brew with Cascara Cold Foam held the top spot in a ranking of all the drinks on the Starbucks menu, according to Thrillist.

But if you’re the kind of person who needs to have your coffee supersized, you’re in for a disappointment. Starbucks Nitro Cold Brew is served in tall and grande sizes only. According to Fox News, a company spokesperson explained that the drink is not available in venti because serving it in that size would cause the drink to lose the frothiness and bubbles that make the drink special.

Why I Needed To Try It

A minor health scare and the resulting consultation with some smart medical dudes convinced me to go on a gluten-free diet a year or so ago.

Giving up bread wasnt so bad, giving up pasta a little harder, and then there was burgers and pizzas and pastries and fried chicken and eating out without asking the waiter a million questions But I could deal with all that.

The one thing that really bothered me, above all that, was beer. And particularly Guinness. That smooth, velvety stout that went down so easily youd be on your 6th pint before you even realized you were having a drink!

So when I heard of this rad idea of cold coffee that fizzes like Guinness I was sold. Nitro Cold Brew, or just Nitro for short, has exploded in the last year or two and Ive been itching to learn about it and try it.

Not least because of my love for iced or cold brew coffee.

Starbucks Cold Brew Comes In A Bottle Too

You may not have 24 hours to make your own pitcher, but you can still enjoy the taste of Starbucks cold brew at home or on the go. The coffee retailer has bottled their popular cold brew coffee, and made it available in the grocery aisle.

In case you’re a little skeptical about drinking your cold brew from a bottle, you should know that Starbucks is getting some pretty great reviews. EatThis, Not That! credits the Black Cold Brew bottle as tasting “as though it was made by a small hipster cafe in Brooklyn.” And the folks at BuzzFeed ranked Starbucks Cold Brew Cocoa and Honey with Cream second in a taste test of seven bottled cold brew brands.

But be careful with some of Starbucks cold brew bottle varieties. While the black cold brew coffee has 15 calories, and zero grams of fat and sugar, one 11-ounce bottle of Starbucks Cold Brew Cocoa and Honey with Cream has 150 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, and 21 grams of sugar, according to Eat This, Not That!.

What Is The Caffeine Content Of A Nitro Cold Brew

With cold brew coffees in general, its usually not a question of if it has caffeine its a question of how much caffeine is in it. Unless your coffee shop of choice sells decaf cold brew, your nitro cold brew is bound to be caffeinated.

How much caffeine will it have, though? The answer depends on the size you get. If youre going to Starbucks for your nitro cold brew, youre looking at the following amounts of caffeine per serving:

  • Tall : 215 mg
  • Grande : 280 mg

For comparison, the numbers for a regular Starbucks cold brew are:

  • Tall: 155 mg
  • Trenta: 360 mg

Nitro cold brew contains more caffeine than the regular stuff because its more concentrated.

Of course, all of these numbers presume you are not getting a shot or two of espresso in your drink. Youd do best to ask your barista about any additional caffeine youre looking to add to your drink.

What Is Nitro Coffee

What is Starbucks Nitro Cold Brew?

Nitro coffee is a cold coffee brew infused with nitrogen, a colorless and odorless gas and makes up to 79% of the fresh air we inhale. Although the combination may seem strange, nitro coffee has a phenomenal and lingering aftertaste.

Nitrogen is preferred to Carbon dioxide because it makes your beverage frothy, which gives you the perception of a sweet beverage without sugar being added. It also makes your drinks thick as beer making sure you enjoy every sip. The nitrogen gas hits different places of your tongue, bringing out all the flavors.

Charging beverages with nitrogen is not a new technique it has been used for decades and has proven effective. For instance, common beverages like common beers and sodas are infused with carbon dioxide or other colorless and odorless gases.

Nitro coffee is fast becoming a favorite drink in the coffee world. This is mainly because of its taste and texture. Nitrogen gas does not diffuse like carbon dioxide. This means that nitrogen forms small bubbles that affect the texture of the coffee without changing its taste.

Many nitro lovers prefer to drink the beverage black, either drained in ice and rely on the creaminess of the drink rather than adding dairy products. If you have a sweet tooth, do not worry because there is a wide variety of flavors you can add to make your mug of coffee delightful. For instance, you can add sugar, vanilla syrup, and sweet cream.

Why You Can’t Order A Venti Nitro Cold Brew At Starbucks

Drinking the Nitro Cold Brew in a venti cup denies customers the “best experience of the beverage”

Some days ordering a venti-sized coffee from Starbucks is necessary but if youre looking to order a venti Nitro Cold Brew, youll have to make do with just a tall or a grande.

The unique taste and texture of Nitro Cold Brew has become a fan-favorite at participating stores, leaving coffee-drinkers to wonder why they cant add those extra few ounces of the drink into their venti cup.

While many speculate the issue to be a caffeine overload, the real reason comes down to the size of the cup not allowing the drink to be enjoyed in the way it was originally intended.

The Nitro Cold Brew is created by infusing nitrogen into the companys signature drink which is smooth in texture, naturally sweet, and slow-steeped for 20 hours as it comes out from the tap, a Starbucks rep tells PEOPLE.

Since the point of the Nitro Cold Brew is to enjoy the frothy texture and foam, ordering a venti defeats the purpose as it would lose the drinks nitro cascade or the texture given from the cascade of bubbles, Starbucks says.

The company also adds that customers would miss out on the best experience of the beverage if they drank the Nitro Cold Brew in the fan-favored venti cup.

Prevents Certain Types Of Cancers

Nitro coffee is brewed by steeping coffee beans in water and infusing the drink with nitrogen. Nitro coffee contains a high concentration of antioxidants compared to other beverage drinks. This is because the drink is brewed in an environment with no air. This ensures that the coffee beans are not continually exposed to oxygen.

By doing this, the coffee retains its oxidants, thus making it a healthy drink Recent medical studies showed that eating food rich in antioxidants can improve your health and minimize the risk of specific cancers such the lung and gastric cancer.

Its silky and smooth, and it does not taste burnt like the traditional dark-roast espresso. Starbucks says you should expect bright, sweet citrus notes with hints of lemon, orange, and caramel but I didnt taste that at all. I just tasted coffee, except nicer.

Is There Anything Else You Need To Know

If youve ever had Guinness Stout or any other nitro canned beverage, you probably know what to expect. Each can has a little nitrogen infuser that releases a bubbly hiss when you crack the can.

There are few things prettier than a silky pour of Guinness foam dancing up a beer glass, and if I had to complain about anything, it would be that these coffees put on a much more muted show.

Ive also had nitro coffee from Trader Joes that had better dance moves than these, but Im just nitpicking. It may not have my desired show effect, but the nitrogen certainly does its job, making each of these foamy and silky smooth.

How To Make It At Home

Nitro coffee is a popular choice among coffee lovers for its distinct taste and texture.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to find and is often pricey around $35 for a single cup.

While making true nitro coffee requires additional equipment to infuse the coffee with nitrogen, you can try making a batch of cold brew coffee at home for a similar taste and nutrient profile:

  • Combine 4 ounces of coarsely ground coffee with about 4 cups of water. Then simply stir and refrigerate for 1824 hours.
  • After the coffee has finished steeping, pour it over a strainer and cheesecloth to separate the coffee grounds from the coffee concentrate.
  • Transfer the beverage to a clean jar and enjoy.
  • You can adjust the amounts to make bigger batches and store the drink in the refrigerator for up to two weeks at a time.

    Summary

Though additional equipment is required to make true nitro coffee, you can easily make cold brew coffee at home using just a few ingredients.

Cold-brewed nitro coffee tastes sweeter and has a thicker and smoother texture than regular coffee.

Whats more, its less acidic and higher in caffeine.

However, when it comes to nutritional value and health benefits, such as weight loss and extended longevity, regular and nitro coffee are a close match.

Feel free to switch out your hot cup of coffee for a cold brew from time to time in order to take advantage of the unique flavor and texture that each has to offer.

Starbucks Cold Brew Has More Caffeine Than Iced Coffee But That’s Not The Whole Story

If your coffee obsession has less to do with flavor and more to do with the caffeine jolt, you may want to know how cold brew stacks up to the competition. Contrary to popular opinion, espresso and and dark roast coffee don’t necessarily always have the highest levels of caffeine per serving, as Huffpost points out. In fact, the amount of caffeine in your coffee depends on everything from how your coffee is ground to the way it is brewed.

If you want the biggest caffeine bang for your buck at Starbucks, it may depend on your preference. When you’re in the mood for cold coffee, cold brew is definitely the way to go. By comparison, cold brew has more caffeine per serving than a traditional iced coffee. According to the nutrition facts listed on the Starbucks website, a grande cold brew contains 205 mg of caffeine, compared to 165 mg of caffeine in a grande iced coffee. But when compared to some of the hot drinks on the menu, cold brew doesn’t hold up. There are 310 mg of caffeine in a grande Pike Place .
