How To Make Starbucks
These are the ingredients and equipment/materials that you need for makin Starbucks -style cold brew::
- Eight ounces of whole Arabica coffee beans
- Eight cups or two quarts of filtered water
- Coffee grinder
- Two jars or pitchers with lids
- Rubber band;
These are the steps:
How To Strain Your Cold Brew
Once youre done steeping the coffee, youll need to strain the coffee grounds out of the water. A fine-mesh sieve or French press filter isnt sufficient . Most methods will suggest using cheese cloth, but I hate cheese cloth! Its difficult to work with and seems so wasteful.
I played around with other options and found two that work great. See my photos for examples of each. Choose one:
To strain, simply place the coffee filter into a small fine-mesh sieve, or drape your cloth over the sieve. Place it over a pitcher or liquid measuring cup, and pour the concentrate through it. Thats it!

Want to change it up? Try making cold brew iced tea. Like cold brew coffee, its more smooth and less bitter.
Does The Type Of Roast Matter
Choosing the type of roast you use is largely a matter of personal preference for coffee consumption. The best course of action is to experiment. Dont make the mistake of presuming that your chosen roast for hot coffee is the same as your desired roast for cold coffee.
Despite the expert disagreement, some advocate light to medium roasts, which are naturally more acidic than dark roasts, because the cold brewing process removes a large amount of acidity from the beans during the roasting step.
Another reason that other cold brewers choose dark roasts is that cold-brewed coffee tends to taste darker and richer and includes notes of chocolate, nutmeg, and earthiness than hot-brewed coffee.
Because of the bright acidity that distinguishes light roasts, it may be difficult to extract this acidity during cold brewing, resulting in a muted overall flavor.
Its vital to remember that lighter roasts will take longer to extract because the beans cellular structure has been less damaged throughout the roasting process.

Final Words & Comments
If you are considering trying out the best cold brew at home, no matter which way you brew it and how you consume it then definitely do so. Cold brew comes with its own list of pros and cons, but whats much more important is that you get the chance to experience a whole new world of coffee.
Hopefully, our guide with the best bean list has given you a good idea of what to expect. To get started with cold brew, the reviewed beans should be good enough, but do remember that many types of beans will work with cold brewing as long as they are coarse enough.
Dont expect to find the perfect beans for cold brew on the first try. Instead, try out a few varieties and figure out which you like more. Be open to experiments as well there is much to explore with cold brewing!
Arabica Or Robusta Beans
Lets start with Arabica. It is responsible for the aroma and taste. These properties are obviously the most important the finished taste in the cup is mainly made by arabica. However, the cost of these beans will be much higher than that of other varieties.
Firstly, because Arabica beans are harder to grow these beans make higher demands. And secondly, just because the taste characteristics that we want are several times stronger and better. You need to understand that for maximum pleasure from a cup of coffee Arabica is the most successful option.
Another variety, Robusta, is responsible for the caffeine and strength of the drink. Arabica contains 2-3 times less caffeine extract than this variety. The drink with pure robusta is strong and bitter, as it does not have a bright taste there are no arabica!
Moreover, the flavor profile of the drink will be earthy the taste characteristics here are boring. In its pure form, this type of beans is rarely used it is mainly used as a supplement.
If you want an energy boost, then focus on the Robusta beans.
80% of Arabica and 20% of Robusta is the classic formula of any coffee. Where Robusta is more prevalent this is just an attempt by the cold brew coffee brands to save. Pay attention to this.

Single Origin Vs Coffee Blends
Most connoisseurs of cold brew coffee will tell you that single origin coffee is optimal for brewing. This is because you wont really feel the flavor mixes of coffee blends.
In hot brewing, coffee blends are very often used to control the sweetness, bitterness, and acidity of the coffee. Since cold water doesnt fully extract coffee from the grounds, it doesnt really make sense to use anything other than single origin beans for cold brew.
Best Overall: Toddy Cold Brew System

Could it be easier than this? Probably not. Just fill the removable stainless steel filter with your favorite ground coffee, add water, and snap the lid on. Then place the brewer in the refrigerator to steep. When morning comes, just turn the spigot to dispense coffee into your mug or thermos, and youre on your way.

Equipment: What You Need To Get Started
Youll need a grinder that can produce a coarser grind size than a standard espresso grinder. If you already have a retail grinder, like a Ditting KR805 or a Mahlkonig EK43 then youre all set. If not, we think the Baratza Forte or the Breville Smart Grinder Pro are a good choices theyre relatively affordable, they dont take up much space and can be used for grinding espresso, aeropress & any other brew methods you use.
If a grinder is out of the question, then you can use ground coffee just ask to get it ground on the coarse side of a filter grind.
There are literally dozens of cold brewers available for the coffee professional. The easiest way to get started is the classic toddy brewer , its cheap, functional and difficult to break.
Having said that, if youre more of a DIY kind of person, you can get great results brewing in a saucepan and filtering the grounds twice: once with a sieve & once with a paper filter.
The results will be just as good with this hack method, but the process is a little easier with a dedicated device like the Toddy.
Yes, water quality makes a massive difference. The team from our Coffee Science & Education Centre have done some in depth work on the ideal water for brewing coffee take a look.
Suffice to say, water straight out of the tap is unlikely to give great results. If you can use the water that has been filtered for your espresso machine, thats a better place to start.

Choosing Your Beans And Grinds
Go with your flavor preference when choosing your cold brew coffee beans. If you prefer a mild, less bitter taste, go with a blonder or lighter roast. Choose a darker roast if you prefer a stronger coffee flavor.
Note: For cold brew, darker roasts do tend to work better as far as flavor is concerned, as lighter roasts can sometimes get lost or muted.
As for choosing your grinds, be sure to select a coarser grind size. These work better for cold brew, as fine grinds can pass through the towels and create a gritty coffee. Cold brew grinds should be course like beach sand.

Style Of Brew: Immersion Cold Brew Vs Drip Cold Brew
There are two main ways to create cold brew at home: 1) Immersion , and 2) slow drip .
The immersion method is the favourite way to cold brew because its simple and only requires you have access to:
- Cold water
- A glass
- Coffee grounds
However, it does require that you steep the coffee overnight in the refrigerator for about 11 to 12 hours minimum.
So the major advantage to slow drip is that you can brew a cold one in just 3 to 5 hours, depending on the equipment. Heres what youll need for slow drip cold brew:
- Coffee grounds
- Slow drip carafe or cold brew maker
That specialised equipment requires some investment of up to $150, or if you want to go commercial, there are $17,000 espresso machines, too.
We suggest using the immersion method also because of its full-bodied flavor for any coffee type. The taste is actually much more diluted with a slow drip coffee brewer, and you also have to choose the right coffee bean depending on the method.
Cold Brew Lab Organic Coarse Ground Coffee
With a name like Cold Brew Lab, I imagine teams of scientists perfecting their beans and grinding process to deliver the best cup of coffee. Realistically, though, the company uses the same methods as everyone else to create this extra coarse dark roast.
Because it’s extra coarse, this blend is as close to having whole beans without needing to grind them. Cold Brew Lab does blend medium and dark-roasted beans for a smooth, delicate finish.;
These beans are sourced from Columbia and certified 100 percent organic. You can choose between a one or two-pound bag.;

Your choice of beans can make a difference, especially given the difference in the brewing process. Choosing the best cold brew coffee beans on how you prefer to take your coffee.
If you prefer your beverage without milk, medium roast coffee beans should give you the best result. Those who want to add milk will find a dark roast more suited to their tastes.
But can you use regular ground coffee for a cold brew? Since it uses a different brewing process, you probably shouldnt use regular ground coffee. The conventionally available ground coffee is usually made for drip machines and has a fine grind that just wont go well with steeping for several hours. That doesnt mean pre ground coffee is out of the question, as long as you get a very coarse grind, you could give it a shot. If regular pre ground coffee is all you have, its better to consider iced coffee.
