Low Calorie Starbucks Pro Tips

ICED TOASTED VANILLA OAT MILK SHAKEN EXPRESSO: A Starbucks Copycat Recipe

The majority of drinks at Starbucks are either made with 2% milk or whole milk.

Both of these are high in calories, but Starbucks has some awesome options that you can substitute in any drink.

These are all the milk options at Starbucks in order from lowest calorie to highest:

  • Almond Milk – 30 Calories
  • Whole Milk – 75 Calories

*4oz servings were used for the calorie counts above.

You can choose any milk you want, but to keep it as low calorie as possible, I suggest going with almond milk.

That said, if you like nonfat milk, you can order almost any of these low calorie Starbucks drinks in the “skinny” version, and it will substitute the milk in it for nonfat milk, use sugar free syrup, and no cream. Ordering this low calorie Starbucks drink is a quick and easy way to make them healthy but still delicious!

Sweetening Your Drink

Now, the majority of Starbucks drinks have a couple of pumps of simple syrup in them as a sweetener. And each pump of sugar free syrup has 20 calories.

So to keep your drink as low calorie as possible, I suggest going with the sugar free vanilla syrup.

Another way to sweeten your drink is by adding in a Splenda or Stevia In The Raw packet. Both are much sweeter than sugar so you won’t need to use as much of them to sweeten up your drinks.

What Is The Toasted Vanilla At Starbucks

The Toasted Vanilla at Starbucks is a flavor of Frappuccino® Blended Beverage, which is a creamy, frozen drink made with coffee, ice, and other added ingredients like mocha and chocolate. The Toasted Vanilla Frappuccino® Blended Beverage is made with a bold espresso, plus vanilla bean and coffee frappuccino syrup, which are then blended with milk and ice.

The resulting coffee drink is topped with whipped cream and a dark caramel drizzle. The Toasted Vanilla Frappuccino® provides a nice balance of the taste of coffee and sweetness of the vanilla. Its a delicious way to enjoy a creamy coffee treat, especially on a hot summer day.

Honey And Hazelnut Oat Milk Latte

Weve already told you about the honey oat milk latte, but if you need just a little more flavor with your morning coffee this is a nice option.

Add a pump or two of hazelnut to your honey oat milk latte and you have a sweet and nutty change to your morning routine. Adding hazelnut syrup to this drink does add more sugar and more calories to this drink, so you may want to skip whipped cream or order a smaller size.

How Do I Order A Healthy Shaken Espresso From Starbucks

If youd like to order a healthy shaken espresso from Starbucks, there are a few options to consider. First, youll want to decide between shaken espresso or an iced espresso. A shaken espresso uses shots of espresso shaken with ice and simple syrup, while an iced espresso uses brewed espresso poured over ice.

Next, youll need to decide between whole milk, skim milk, soy milk, or almond milk for your drink. Whole milk is the most calorie-dense option and can be beneficial for those trying to gain weight. However, it contains the most saturated fat and can be less beneficial for those trying to lose weight or retain a healthy diet.

Skim milk is the lowest calorie option, while soy and almond milk are low-calorie alternatives that have a hint of sweetness.

Finally, youll need to decide how much sweetener youd like in your drink. You can request that your drink is made without any added sweetener, but its recommended that you try a small amount of simple syrup, syrup flavor, or sugar-free syrup option first.

Once your drink has been made, be sure to enjoy it responsibly and keep in mind any dietary restrictions you may have. A healthy shaken espresso from Starbucks can be a great way to get your morning shot of espresso and have a delicious treat at the same time.

Components Needed For A Toasted Vanilla Syrup

In order to make a true toasted vanilla syrup you need to toast a vanilla bean! I also like to use a toasted sugar to add that slight caramel taste.

Toasting the sugar is optional. However, I have tested this recipe with regular sugar and it doesnt have the same depth as with the toasted sugar. It still makes a lovely syrup though!

How To Toast The Vanilla Bean

trying Starbucks NEW toasted vanilla oat milk shaken espresso!

Step 1: First we grab our vanilla bean to toast.

Step 2: Split it in half and scrape out the seeds.

Step 3: Chop it up into small pieces.

Step 4: Then cook on medium heat stirring fairly often for about 1-2 minutes. When they are done they will smell very fragrant and will have lightened a bit in colour.

Step 5: Remove from the heat.

Step 6: Use a spice grinder, pestle and mortar or a cutting board and a rolling pin to crush it into fine pieces.

What Does The Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso Taste Like

Last year’s Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso is still on the menu and offers a slightly different flavor.

It tastes more of cinnamon and the oat milk gives it a toasty flavor like a golden sugar cookie.

The brown sugar version is a good option for fans of the Apple Crisp Macchiato that launched in August 2021.

Now, that the shaken espresso choices have expanded, it’s tricky to pin down the better option.

Caramelized Macadamia Oat Milk Latte

The newest offering from Starbucks is the caramelized macadamia latte. In larger markets, this drink hit the menu in early January, but expect it to roll out slower in smaller markets.

This drink is buttery, nutty and caramel all in one taste. Use oat milk instead of whole milk for a lower-fat, lighter option that is still creamy, but allows you to stick to your New Years resolutions.

Difference Between Espresso And Shaken Espresso

The main difference is that a regular espresso is much smaller than a shaken espresso which also packs milk, optional syrup, and ice.

A Starbucks double espresso with two shots of coffee is served in a 1.5 oz cup. A tall Starbucks iced shaken espresso has the same amount of espresso in a 12 oz drink. This makes the shaken espresso eight times bigger than a double espresso due to the additional milk, ice, and flavors.

Starbucks is well known for its flexible beverage policy, and you have complete control over your drink. Thus its easy to customize your beverage with your preferred espresso, syrup, milk, and more.

We recommend topping this frappuccino with java chips and whipped cream. Actually, this Starbucks drink makes a perfect dessert to end your day.

History Of Shaken Espresso At Starbucks

Shaken espresso originally came from Italy and is known as shakerato. Made of a single or double shot of espresso hand-shaken with ice and some sugar or syrup all shaken up in a cocktail shaker.

Starbucks introduced hand-shaken iced coffees and teas in 2003. The hand-shaken technique was inspired by mixology and it helps to blend the ingredients and gets the best flavors out of the drink.

The US Coffee Giant launched its shaken espresso line in March 2021. This was the same time when they rolled out Oatly oatmilk across the US stores. Iced Shaken Espressos with oatmilk are some of the most popular Starbucks Oat Milk Drinks.

Starbucks version of shakerato includes an additional ingredient, vegan milk: either oatmilk or almondmilk. Milk provides extra frothiness to the beverage. And we love this chilled drink because its sweet, caffeinated, and simply amazing.

Recently Starbucks rounded out its lineup of dairy-free Shaken Espresso drinks with the debut of the brand new Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso as part of the spring 2022 menu update.

  • Shaking adds an extra dimension and some visual flair behind the counter and the soothing sound of swooshing ice.

Is the Starbucks Iced Toasted Vanilla Oat Milk Shaken Espresso healthy?

While nutritionists arent exactly ready to call the Iced Toasted Vanilla Oat Milk Shaken Espresso a health drinkand Starbucks never claimed it isthey point out that its not terrible compared to some other Starbucks specialty drinks available. Its less of a sugar bomb than a lot of their other beverages, but 11 grams of sugar is still significant, says Jessica Cording, M.S., R.D., dietitian and author of The Little Book of Game-Changers.

Keri Gans, M.S., R.D., author of The Small Change Diet, agrees. As compared to lots of other Starbucks iced drinks, it has less grams of sugar and fat, making it a better option, she says. But Gans points out that healthy can be a relative term. It really depends on what you are comparing it to, she says. An iced espresso with without any added sugar would be the healthiest choice.
